00:00Who is this?
00:01I'm Bart Simpson.
00:02Who the hell are you?
00:03I'm Michael Jackson.
00:04THE Michael Jackson?
00:05Pfft.
00:06No way.
00:07Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for TV episodes that were too
00:10controversial to air.
00:11Spoilers will be mentioned, so this is your official warning.
00:14What's with all these flags?
00:17I don't know.
00:19It's the Puerto Rican Day Parade!
00:23Number 30.
00:24Dad Baby, Bluey
00:25It may be one of the most well-known and beloved shows by kids and parents alike, but even
00:29that doesn't make it immune from censorship.
00:31The program tackled the hardships of pregnancy in a humorous way in Dad Baby.
00:35You're pregnant with baby Bingo, so you have to act pregnant.
00:41Okay, if we're gonna do this, let's do it properly.
00:44In the episode, Bluey's father Bandit tries his hand at simulating pregnancy, complete
00:48with a fake belly.
00:49The concept was silly and harmless enough, with some playful jokes about the discomforts
00:53that occur during pregnancy.
00:54However, the experiment was capped off with the fictional father figure pretending to
00:58give birth.
00:59While nothing graphic was shown, the simulated contractions seemingly proved to be too much.
01:02It never made it to Disney's services, and was only finally released to their YouTube
01:06channel in May of 2024.
01:11Number 29.
01:12Man's Best Friend, The Ren and Stimpy Show
01:14You never know what straw will break the camel's back.
01:17Known for its shock value and casual violence, The Ren and Stimpy Show was a staple of 1990s
01:21television.
01:22Look at the cute little rascals.
01:24Yes sir, a man needs to share his love.
01:27You know, a man needs the companionship of lower life forms.
01:31Despite its reputation, one episode went so far that it didn't make it to air until Spike
01:36TV's inception in 2003.
01:38In Man's Best Friend, the titular characters are adopted by a human and vigorously trained
01:42into becoming obedient pets.
01:44There were plenty of adult references throughout, from jokes about bodily fluids to cigars being
01:48handed out as treats.
01:49There was even a sequence where Stimpy viciously beats their owner with an oar.
01:53You mustn't!
01:54He is our master!
01:55Shut up!
01:56You're next, Mr. Doggy Treat!
02:02The moment was so intense that Nickelodeon refused to play it, and even went so far as
02:06to fire the show's creator.
02:08Number 28.
02:09The One with the Lesbian Wedding, Friends
02:11Instances like this make it clear just how much progress society has made in a relatively
02:15short time.
02:16When Friends was first premiering in the 1990s, marriage equality was hardly being discussed.
02:20We're getting married.
02:27As in, I now pronounce you wife and wife married?
02:32Anyway, we'd like you to come, but we'd totally understand if you don't want to.
02:36So when the sitcom made the bold decision to depict a wedding between a lesbian couple,
02:40viewers across the nation were shocked.
02:41Despite the wholesome storyline and not showing any physical contact between the couple, two
02:46TV affiliates in Texas and Ohio refused to air it at all.
02:49Even citing protests in response.
02:51Friends, family, we're gathered here today to join Carol and Susan in holy matrimony.
02:57Oh my God!
02:58Now I've seen everything!
03:00Despite the local bannings, the network themselves only received a few calls complaining about
03:04it, and it was the highest-rated program that week, showing that the episode overall had
03:08a primarily positive impact.
03:10Number 27.
03:11The Hunger Strike, The Boondocks
03:13One of the most well-known types of comedy is parody, but that doesn't always mean the
03:17subject of such jokes always appreciates them.
03:19The Boondocks was beloved for tackling controversial topics through satire.
03:23Our leader Bob Johnson had a dream, a dream of creating a network that would accomplish
03:27what hundreds of years of slavery, Jim Crow, and malt liquor couldn't.
03:33That went after everybody, including one of the show's executive producers in the season
03:362 installment, The Hunger Strike.
03:38Both the president and CEO of BET were lambasted and accused of exploiting their community.
03:43The parodies were scathing and hit so hard that it only premiered in Canada in 2008 with
03:47a disclaimer.
03:48In the United States, however, it was only available via DVD until it finally premiered
03:52on Adult Swim in 2020.
03:54Of course it was a setup.
03:55I believe the release of this video was engineered by BET themselves, working in conjunction
04:00with the Republican Party and the FBI.
04:02While executives have never confirmed their reasons for doing so, many fans are convinced
04:06the imitation played into their decision.
04:09Number 26.
04:10Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, Community
04:12The debate behind this decision is still being had by fans to this day.
04:16During protests in 2020, some streaming services responded to concerns people had regarding
04:21blackface in the programming.
04:22At the end of the meeting, they realized that Chang had been there and felt too awkward
04:27to mention it.
04:28This resulted in several episodes from various shows being removed, including Community's
04:32Advanced Dungeons & Dragons.
04:34In one scene, Chang depicted a dark elf by painting his face black, and the eventual
04:38removal sparked debate in several circles.
04:40So we're just gonna ignore that hate crime?
04:42Some fans and cast members questioned the final decision, citing the context in which
04:45the act was done and defending the joke.
04:48However, series creator Dan Harmon ended up agreeing with the contentious final decision,
04:52even if it was at the cost of what he thought was one of the series' most iconic storylines.
04:57Number 25.
04:58Episode 847, Sesame Street
05:00This is probably one of the last shows you expected to see, and its inclusion is one
05:03of the most unfair.
05:04In 1976, Sesame Street featured Margaret Hamilton, who played the Wicked Witch of the West in
05:09The Wizard of Oz.
05:10From the looks of it, I know I'm not in Oz anymore.
05:14I must be over the rainbow somewhere.
05:17Well, the sooner I can get out of here, the better I'll like it."
05:21It depicted the villain creating violence upon arrival, from making it rain in doors
05:24to threatening beloved characters.
05:26It even ended in a dark manner, with one of the characters sobbing in fear as the witch
05:30reveals the episode's sponsors.
05:32Countless parents wrote in after the fact, reporting that their children were so horrified
05:36that they wanted to stop watching the show entirely.
05:38You know something?
05:40You have got to be the most beautiful person I have ever seen.
05:44Oh, keep still.
05:45Wow, I think I'm in love.
05:48Really?
05:51After focus testing to review the claims, the program was pulled and shelved until 2019,
05:55over 40 years later.
05:57Number 24.
05:58America's Next Top Patties Billboard Model Contest
06:01It's always sunny in Philadelphia.
06:03Sometimes doing something later is better than doing nothing at all.
06:06I don't want to be on your billboard, and I'll tell you why.
06:07I'm going to take one of my characters and I'm going to launch a viral video and promote
06:10patties myself.
06:12Known for its unapologetic sense of humor, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia has never
06:16been afraid of crossing whatever boundaries needed to show how awful the characters are.
06:20However, even they can take it too far, and nothing exemplifies this better than America's
06:25Next Top Patties Billboard Model Contest.
06:27In it, Dee and Charlie attempt to promote the bar, but the former's increasingly offensive
06:31characters make it difficult for them.
06:33You that, uh, that girl, uh, Pathetic Girl 43.
06:37Pathetic Girl?
06:38I almost didn't recognize you in that getup, but I recognize that whiny voice anyway.
06:41While she's called out numerous times throughout, the concept was pushed to the limit when she
06:45donned blackface to play Martina Martinez.
06:48Although their intentions to call out racism were good, it aged poorly, leading to it being
06:52removed from streaming platforms in 2020.
06:55Number 23.
06:56Earshot Buffy the Vampire Slayer
06:58For many, entertainment is a way to escape their day-to-day lives.
07:01This includes not wanting to be reminded of societal ills, especially those that resulted
07:05in multiple deaths.
07:06This time tomorrow, I'll kill you all.
07:09Buffy the Vampire Slayer was no stranger to fantastical violence, but her reference to
07:13a real-life crime took things too far.
07:15In Earshot, Buffy was tasked with finding the person who wanted to attack her school.
07:19What are you talking about?
07:21Actions having consequences, you know, stuff like that.
07:24I, I wouldn't ever hurt anybody.
07:28In the wake of the Columbine tragedy, the network decided the plot was simply too dark
07:31and too real, leaving them scrambling to postpone it.
07:34It ended up not being released for several months, and when it did, it eventually went
07:38on to be considered one of the series' best.
07:40Number 22.
07:41Comedians Beavis and Butthead
07:43Entertainment has always been a convenient scapegoat for larger issues, especially when
07:47it's controversial.
07:48In Comedians, the titular characters on Beavis and Butthead decided to attempt stand-up comedy.
07:52What's green and red and goes 100 miles an hour?
07:55A frog in a blender.
08:01Get it?
08:02After bombing their set, Beavis tries juggling flaming newspapers in the empty club, resulting
08:07in the club also catching fire.
08:09A month after airing, a young boy reportedly set his trailer on fire, killing his younger
08:13sister in the process.
08:14His mother claimed he'd been inspired by the cartoon, even though it was later reported
08:18that she didn't even have cable.
08:19We should be on TV.
08:23How come that club owner dude didn't like us?"
08:25They'd be stupid.
08:28Yeah, not everybody can be cool like us."
08:33Despite the lack of proof, it was still pulled, and the show was bumped to a later time slot
08:37and even prohibited from talking about fire.
08:3921.
08:40Bored She Hung Herself, Hawaii Five-0
08:43The title alone makes it obvious why this was doomed from the very start.
08:46Despite being a police drama, Hawaii Five-0 is still relatively family-friendly, save
08:50for this now-banned episode.
08:52In it, the team investigated a case wherein a woman had supposedly taken her own life
08:56while trying a new yoga technique.
08:58Although there were no issues leading up to the broadcast, things soon took a horrific
09:01turn when it was reported that a viewer had apparently tried a similar method and died,
09:06resulting in a lawsuit from their family.
09:08In response, Bored She Hung Herself was swiftly pulled from syndication.
09:12It has also never been included in any DVD sets or streaming services, essentially wiping
09:17it from the show's history.
09:1820.
09:19Feel Me, Feel Me, Know Me!
09:21The Powerpuff Girls When you think of banned TV, you probably
09:24don't think of cartoons made for little kids.
09:26Alas, one episode of The Powerpuff Girls was banned in the United States for religious
09:30imagery.
09:31The episode features a destroyed building, and executives at Cartoon Network believed
09:41that the exposed beams looked too much like crosses.
09:50There's also a hippie character that they felt resembled Jesus.
09:55These inclusions had the Cartoon Network sweating, and they banned the episode from release.
10:03However, it was aired in many other countries and now appears on streaming and the DVD.
10:1619.
10:18Star Trek The Next Generation From the late 1960s to 1998, Ireland was
10:23embroiled in the Troubles, a violent conflict over whether Northern Ireland should remain
10:27part of the U.K. or unify with the Republic of Ireland.
10:30Sir, I'm finding it difficult to understand many aspects of Ansata conduct.
10:38Much of their behavioral norm would be defined by my program as unnecessary and unacceptable.
10:42Fighting for the latter option was the IRA, a paramilitary group designated as a terrorist
10:48organization in the U.K.
10:49In the 1990 Star Trek episode, The High Ground, Data notes that the IRA's terrorist activities
10:54worked and that Ireland was unified in the year 2024.
10:57Yet there are numerous examples when it was successful.
11:01The independence of the Mexican state from Spain, the Irish unification of 2024, and
11:07the Kenzie Rebellion.
11:08Because the episode depicted a united Ireland attained through terrorism, the episode was
11:13initially banned in both the U.K. and Ireland.
11:15And would it be accurate to say that terrorism is acceptable when all options for a peaceful
11:21settlement have been foreclosed?
11:2318.
11:24Insane in the Membrane – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
11:27In 2003, a reboot of the famous Turtle brand began airing on Fox.
11:31However, one episode proved too violent for the family-friendly programming block, and
11:36that episode was season four's Insane in the Membrane.
11:39Scheduled for release on March 4, 2006, the episode was pulled in the U.S. due to its
11:44graphic content.
11:54Series producer Lloyd Goldfein blames the ban on a roster change within Fox.
11:58According to him, every step of the episode's production was approved by the network.
12:02But new personnel were horrified.
12:05It was cut from rotation and wasn't aired in the U.S. until 2015.
12:2117.
12:22Unstoppable – Law & Order Special Victims Unit
12:25Produced in early 2016, this episode of Law & Order Special Victims Unit might never see
12:30the light of day.
12:36Even though a promo was aired, the episode was pulled before it aired.
12:39It was reportedly inspired by a real case – a woman's accusation that when she was
12:43very young, Donald Trump assaulted her at one of Jeffrey Epstein's notorious parties.
12:48Trump and Epstein were friends and partied together throughout the 1990s, until falling
12:59out over real estate in 2004.
13:01While the woman's lawsuit was withdrawn, about two dozen other women subsequently accused
13:06Trump of sexual misconduct.
13:08When Trump was elected president in November, Unstoppable was shelved.
13:1816.
13:21The Great McGrady – Arthur
13:24Cancer is a difficult subject for anyone to discuss, let alone children.
13:39In the Arthur episode, The Great McGrady, everyone reacts differently upon learning
13:43that Mrs. McGrady has cancer.
13:45But it doesn't seem to have been the subject matter that got the episode banned.
13:49It was apparently the presence of Lance Armstrong.
13:51Francine gets in touch with Armstrong, knowing that he survived cancer.
14:03He is depicted as a heroic figure, but his reputation was tarnished in real life following
14:07the infamous doping scandal.
14:09Reruns of his episode were pulled from rotation in the US, and it was removed from the iTunes
14:14store and Amazon.
14:15It was later revised to remove Armstrong.
14:1815.
14:19Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood
14:20Yep, even Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood had some banned episodes.
14:24In November of 1983, the show aired five episodes about conflict, which contained several references
14:30to war.
14:41Prince Tuesday is taught about war in school, and King Friday starts to suspect that Corny's
14:45factory is manufacturing bomb parts.
15:01The Cold War was obviously on everybody's mind, and a particularly brutal film called
15:05The Day After was aired shortly after this string of episodes.
15:16Owing to its difficult subject matter, the episodes were permanently pulled in 1996 and
15:21are still unavailable to this day.
15:2314.
15:24I'll See You in Court
15:25Married with Children
15:27In this episode of the iconic sitcom, the Bundys travel to a motel to spice up their
15:31love life.
15:44The suggestion comes from Marcy Rhodes, who's slept with her husband at the same motel.
15:48While there, the Bundys find a videotape of the Rhodes couple getting intimate.
16:00Later, the couple's attempt to sue the motel for voyeurism.
16:03Before the episode aired, the censors at Fox demanded cuts, but deemed even the censored
16:08version too problematic, and pulled it from release in the U.S.
16:11It finally aired in 2002, five years after the show ended, but even that airing was censored.
16:2813.
16:29Buffalo Gals
16:30Cow and Chicken
16:38This surreal animated comedy show offended the censors with a sexual innuendo that was
16:42a little too on-the-nose.
16:48In this season two episode, a group of female bikers known as the Buffalo Gals break into
16:52Cow and Chicken's house.
16:54Inside, they begin to chew the carpet.
16:56One of the bikers is even called Munch Kelly.
16:59The innuendo is pretty obvious and got the show in trouble.
17:02While it did air as scheduled on June 27th, 1998, it was replaced in reruns with the episode
17:07Orthodontic Police.
17:0912.
17:10Promises, Promises, Boy Meets World
17:12This popular 90s show deals with all sorts of teenage problems and milestones, including
17:17the first time having sex.
17:19In the fifth season episode, Promises, Promises, Cory and Topanga decide to sleep together
17:23after prom.
17:24Following its initial run on ABC, Boy Meets World was picked up by the Disney Channel
17:37for reruns.
17:38However, due to its sexual content, Promises, Promises was one of three episodes that the
17:42Disney Channel banned.
17:52The other two are The Truth About Honesty, also due to sexual content, and If You Can't
17:56Be With The One You Love, which involves teen drinking.
17:5911.
18:00Oof!
18:01Hannibal
18:02This psychological thriller-horror series features a lot of grotesque imagery, but it
18:06was the way the ideas behind the episode Oof intersected with recent events that proved
18:10most troubling.
18:11The episode sees a group of foster children brainwashed by a mysterious woman into killing
18:16their biological families.
18:33It was scheduled to air in April of 2013, but creator Brian Fuller personally pulled
18:38it from the United States broadcast schedule at the last minute.
18:41He cited the associations that came with the subject matter, and wished to be respectful
18:45of the social climate.
18:57It's believed this was in light of the tragic events at Sandy Hook Elementary School in
19:01December 2012.
19:0310.
19:04Midlife Crustacean – SpongeBob SquarePants
19:07While ostensibly for children, SpongeBob SquarePants makes many mature jokes and is enjoyed by
19:12adults the world over.
19:13The third season episode Midlife Crustacean embraces this and has been repeatedly called
19:18out for it.
19:34The episode depicts a so-called Panty Raid, which sees Patrick, SpongeBob, and Mr. Krabs
19:38raiding a woman's house and stealing her underwear.
19:41The episode was originally supposed to air in November of 2002, but was canceled by Nickelodeon.
19:56While it was later shown on the network, future reruns have again excluded it.
20:00It's also missing from the streaming networks Paramount Plus and Prime Video.
20:049.
20:05Partial Terms of Endearment – Family Guy
20:07Seth MacFarlane's animated sitcom is certainly no stranger to controversy, but the eighth
20:12season episode Partial Terms of Endearment really pushed things.
20:15In this episode, Lois becomes a surrogate mother for an old friend.
20:25However the friend and her husband are killed in a car accident, prompting Lois and Peter
20:29to consider abortion.
20:31The episode's difficult subject matter concerned Fox, who thought it would get them in trouble
20:35with advertisers.
20:36This prompted them to pull the episode from rotation in the U.S.
20:48Adult Swim also refused to air the episode, conceding to Fox's demands.
20:53It was later made available on the Season 8 DVD, but it's currently absent from Disney
20:57Plus.
20:588.
20:59The Encounter – The Twilight Zone
21:01This historic show from Rod Serling often used science fiction and metaphors to comment
21:05on real issues.
21:06Of course, not every episode dealt with otherworldly elements.
21:10The Encounter is a drama centered around an American World War II veteran and a Japanese-American
21:15man named Arthur.
21:24In the veteran's attic, they have a hostile conversation stemming from their respective
21:28experiences in the war.
21:29Arthur's father was a spy who worked construction at Pearl Harbor and betrayed the Americans.
21:34This reveal offended Japanese-American viewers, and the resulting complaints resulted in the
21:55episode being pulled from syndication.
21:57It didn't appear on television again until 2004, a full 40 years after its original airing.
22:047.
22:05Elephant Issues – Tiny Toon Adventures
22:06This episode of Tiny Toon Adventures contains a segment called, One Beer, in which Buster,
22:11Plucky, and Hampton get drunk.
22:13In their intoxicated revelry, the trio steal a police car and drive it off a cliff to their
22:17deaths.
22:25The episode then ends on a clever bit of meta-humor, with Buster commenting on the dark nature
22:30of the storyline by asking, Do we get to do a funny episode tomorrow?
22:43Fox Kids banned the episode over its mature content.
22:46Turns out they didn't like the protagonists drinking, going for a joyride in a stolen
22:50police cruiser, and dying.
22:51Who'd have thunk?
22:52The episode remained banned for the next 22 years, before it finally resurfaced on the
22:56Hub network in 2013.
22:596.
23:00Home – The X-Files
23:01Long regarded as one of the best X-Files episodes, Home is also the most controversial.
23:06It sees Mulder and Scully travel to the titular Pennsylvania town to investigate a deformed,
23:11incestuous family.
23:12The episode is a stew of horrific content featuring a disturbing story and graphic violence,
23:27and became the first of the series to receive a TVMA rating.
23:31Following its initial airing, the episode was banned by Fox for reruns.
23:35They also prevented the Peacock family from returning in a later episode, as was planned
23:39by writers Glenn Morgan and James Wong.
23:445.
23:46Stark Raving Dad – The Simpsons
23:49This cartoon has found itself in hot water on several occasions.
23:52In 2002, Rio officials considered suing Fox for the episode Blame It on Lisa, on the grounds
23:57that it presented a negative and inaccurate portrayal of the city.
24:08More recently in 2019, the 1991 episode Stark Raving Dad also ran into trouble.
24:14Homer befriends a man named Leon Kompowski who believes he's Michael Jackson.
24:18Jackson voiced Leon himself.
24:20But after the series' showrunners saw the documentary Leaving Neverland, they were so
24:33disturbed by allegations against Jackson that they pulled the episode from circulation.
24:38It's also missing from Disney Plus and modern reprints of the Season 3 DVD.
24:424.
24:43Electric Soldier Porygon – Pokemon
24:46Electric Soldier Porygon nearly destroyed Pokemon forever.
24:49In this episode, Ash and his friends enter a computer system and Pikachu hits the antivirus
24:54program with a thunderbolt, resulting in a massive explosion.
24:57This explosion was depicted with strobing blue and red lights.
25:01Not a good idea.
25:02It resulted in what is known as the Pokemon Shock, which sent 685 Japanese children to
25:07hospital, with some suffering seizures and blindness.
25:10The episode currently holds the bizarre world record for most photosensitive epileptic seizures
25:15caused by a television show.
25:24The resulting controversy caused Nintendo's stock to plunge, and they demanded that the
25:28episode never be repeated on television.
25:31And it never has.
25:323.
25:33Hee Haw Hee Haw – Fear Factor
25:35This stunt show hosted by Joe Rogan was notable both for its danger and gross factor.
25:40Each episode featured the contestants doing something daring, whether it was dangling
25:44off a helicopter or eating the private parts of an animal.
25:47But even for Fear Factor, the episode Hee Haw Hee Haw was just too much.
25:51Scheduled to air in January of 2012, the episode featured contestants drinking various fluids
25:57from a donkey.
25:58Good job, guys.
25:59What was that like?
26:00It was just, like, the consistency of it and, like, the taste.
26:01I was not expecting it.
26:02It was like a...
26:03Like someone's been eating a lot of hay?
26:04Like someone's been eating a hell of a lot of hay.
26:07NBC let them get away with a lot, but not with this.
26:10The network decided to pull the episode, and it has remained unaired ever since.
26:14Yes!
26:15You can puke now.
26:16You girls are awesome.
26:17You girls are monsters.
26:18Even that guy over there is impressed with you.
26:21However, footage of the stunt has been uploaded to YouTube, so those daring enough can still
26:25check it out.

26:28The Puerto Rican Day – Seinfeld
26:29For a while, this was the lost episode of Seinfeld.
26:32Airing on May 7, 1998, just one week before the big finale, this one sees the gang getting
26:37stuck in traffic during the Puerto Rican Day parade.
26:40The streets are all blocked.
26:41I don't think every Puerto Rican in the world is out here.
26:44Well, it is our day.
26:49Wrong car.
26:50Sorry.
26:51Kramer accidentally sets the Puerto Rican flag on fire and stomps on it in a panic.
26:56After he's chased by a mob, he remarks that,
26:58You know, it's like this every day in Puerto Rico.
27:01The result was a flood of angry letters and protests outside NBC headquarters.
27:05NBC apologized and the episode was removed from syndication.
27:09It was finally brought back in 2002 with the controversial flag-burning scene intact.

27:30200 and 201 – South Park
27:33To celebrate the show's 200th episode in 2010, writer Trey Parker decided to go all-in
27:38and write a storyline about the show's past controversies.
27:42You just had to push it, didn't you, Stan?
27:44You just had to make fun of Tom Cruise again!
27:47This included Comedy Central's refusal to depict the Islamic prophet Muhammad after
27:51cartoons in European newspapers led to threats and attacks.
27:54After a threatening warning from radical organization Revolution Muslim, Comedy Central caved in
27:59and censored references to Muhammad and even an anti-censorship speech in the episode 201.
28:05That's right, friends.
28:06All you need to do is instill fear and be willing to hurt people, and you can get whatever
28:12you want.
28:13The only true power is violence.
28:17This decision was met with widespread criticism.
28:20Nonetheless, both 200 and 201 were pulled from circulation and aren't available on the
28:25official website or streaming services.
