00:00Clean clubs, clean grips, clean shoes, clean golf.
00:03That's how I like to think about it.
00:04Anyway, in this video, I'm going to talk you through
00:06just how to keep your golf clubs and your golf shoes
00:09as clean as possible.
00:10I'll give you some do's and don'ts
00:11and some tips and tricks of this
00:13undervalued post round routine.
00:23Okay, so before we start getting into the main clean here,
00:25I think one tip I want you to go away with
00:27is how you can keep your clubs clean on the course.
00:29One thing I like to do is with a fairly big towel like this
00:32is wet one side of it with some water,
00:35only a little bit, like a corner of it.
00:36You can see I've done it here.
00:37Keep one side dry, and then after every shot,
00:41dab off with the wet side, dry them with the dry side.
00:43It keeps them nice and clean, especially on a muddy day.
00:46But every now and again,
00:47they're going to get horrible and muddy.
00:48You might have forgot to clean them during the round
00:49or it was just that horrible out there.
00:51They're going to need a full service.
00:53So let's go through that now.
00:55What do you need?
00:56Well, a bucket or a sink full of lukewarm,
01:00not hot, not cold, lukewarm.
01:02A scrubbing brush of some kind.
01:04I like to use a little sort of dish one here.
01:07Again, clean, brand new there.
01:09A slightly more coarse one for grips.
01:11We'll come onto that in a minute.
01:13And then some sort of groove clean.
01:15I've got a pretty useful tool here for that.
01:18So that's all you're going to really need.
01:20What I like to do is in that soapy, lukewarm water,
01:24is just soak the clubs for a little bit, about 10 minutes.
01:27Just your irons and wedges.
01:28I wouldn't worry about soaking any rescues
01:30or fairway woods.
01:31That just helps loosen the dirt a little bit
01:34as they're in there.
01:35So I've only done four for this time.
01:37But once they're nice and wet,
01:39take your light scrubbing brush.
01:42Like I said, this is a bit more of a dish scourer,
01:44but it's not too coarse.
01:45And just work your way gently over the iron.
01:49These are pretty clean already, actually, to be fair.
01:51But you know, it's always good to give them once over.
01:53And just work over the side, the grooves, the back.
01:58Now what I want to do is,
01:59because these grooves have got particularly dirty,
02:01is just work it over with the groove cleaner.
02:04You can see, because it's damp,
02:06all that mud's already coming out.
02:08That's the benefit of soaking them for 10 minutes.
02:10It should make your life a heck of a lot easier.
02:13So that's out of there.
02:15One more brush down there,
02:16because the mud's come out.
02:18And then most importantly, dry them.
02:20Never, ever, ever, ever leave a wet golf club.
02:24They'll start, little specks of rust will start to appear.
02:26And that is the last thing that you want.
02:29So dry them with your towel,
02:31and then leave them to rest.
02:32They'll dry nicely at room temperature, really.
02:35Don't leave them anywhere cold,
02:36and make sure they're dry.
02:37Grips, now, again, these are pretty new,
02:40and they're pretty clean,
02:41but it's the same process for the grips.
02:43I'm just gonna use a slightly coarser brush for this one.
02:46So you can get it nice and wet.
02:48Get the coarser brush nice and wet.
02:50Again, this lukewarm, soapy water does wonders.
02:52And just work your way up and down the grips.
02:55Don't have to be too aggressive with it.
02:57Keep it nice and gentle.
02:58And that should take any, you know, sweat,
03:01sun cream, mud, any of that stuff
03:03that kind of comes out of there really easily,
03:06and give them a really good dry.
03:07This is what gives grips new life again, actually.
03:09It's given them just a really good scrub.
03:11I'd recommend using a cleaner towel than I have.
03:13That's poor for me.
03:15Clean utensils equal clean golf clubs.
03:18So, that's the grips done now.
03:20Now you've got pretty much a brand new,
03:22shiny looking club head and grip.
03:25One last tip I've got for grips,
03:27if they're really toward the end of their lifespan,
03:30and you wanna try and drag another six months
03:32or a year out of them, it's a little bit of sandpaper.
03:35Now, I'd keep this really light
03:38and make sure the sandpaper isn't too coarse.
03:41But if you rub this sandpaper really gently
03:44over the top of your grip,
03:46it'll just take away any really loose rubber
03:48or any shiny rubber,
03:51and should give them a new lease of life, really.
03:53So, give them that thing with the sandpaper.
03:55Make sure to give them a really good scrub as well.
03:59And it should bring them back to life.
04:00I just recommend being careful with this
04:03and not going too crazy with the sandpaper.
04:06But I think it's a really useful tip
04:07if the grips are right on the end of their life,
04:09and you don't fancy replacing them just yet,
04:12is to give them a good bit of sandpaper,
04:13a good clean, and a good scrub.
04:15It's easy as that.
04:16Work your way through the set.
04:17Fairway woods, drivers, hybrids,
04:19I wouldn't bother soaking them.
04:20They don't really need quite as much dirt
04:22coming out of the grooves as your irons and wedges do.
04:25Just dip it in the water,
04:27and use the fine sponge to give it a once over.
04:31One thing to remember when you're doing your hybrids,
04:32fairway woods, drivers,
04:33is there's a lot more sort of cavities in them,
04:36you know, where the adjustability might lie,
04:38or where some screws are.
04:40So if you get any mud like this,
04:41I've clearly had a right hack at this.
04:43Get a T-peg in there, and it tends to fly out.
04:46Give it a little once over.
04:47So remember that with your fairway woods,
04:49hybrids, and drivers.
04:50Always dry the head.
04:51It's even more important on these and your putter,
04:54so they don't go in that head cover wet and start to rust.
04:57Okay, let's talk about golf shoes.
04:58And much like golf clubs,
05:00it's always best to look after these
05:02just after you've finished.
05:03It's the easiest time to get all the mud off.
05:05So once I've finished playing,
05:06I'll use again a clean sponge or a sort of dish cloth
05:09that's been slightly dampened with warm water
05:12just to run over, especially with white shoes,
05:14synthetic or leather ones,
05:16just to run over the tops of them,
05:18get any excess mud off,
05:20and then they should stay cleaner for longer then.
05:23The more persistent bits that tend to sit on this outsole,
05:27it's worth giving them a really good scrub,
05:29a little bit more focus maybe when you get back home.
05:31But the quicker you do it,
05:34the cleaner these are gonna look for longer.
05:36Now, mesh shoes are a little bit tricky.
05:37You can see an old pair we've got here
05:40where the white starts to fade,
05:41and any sort of stains that get into them
05:43can often hang around for a while.
05:46Again, best to look after them as soon as you've finished.
05:48But a couple of tips and tricks for these
05:50is washing them for a start.
05:52You can wash mesh golf shoes on a very light, gentle wash,
05:56remove the laces, remove any insoles
05:58if they can come out as well,
06:00and put them through on a really light wash.
06:02Before you do that, though,
06:03you can give them a focused scrub with a brush like this.
06:06You could give a little go with something
06:09like some pre-wash stain remover that I've got here.
06:12Just dab it onto the areas that look
06:13like they'll be a little bit tougher to bring out.
06:15Or, if you get an old toothbrush and some laundry detergent,
06:20you can very gently work on the slightly more
06:22stubborn areas.
06:24So, work on that with your mesh shoes
06:25if you get some really persistent dirt in there.
06:27I've tried it before.
06:29As long as you keep a gentle wash, you're fine.
06:31Now, whenever you're drying golf shoes,
06:33always avoid drying them by a very hot radiator.
06:36That can melt the glue that puts these outsoles together,
06:39and the shoe can often get a bit sort of,
06:41I don't know, just a bit horrible there.
06:43Room temperature is absolutely fine.
06:45A little tip for drying them as well is to pop some,
06:47especially in these mesh shoes,
06:48is to pop a little bit of newspaper,
06:50scrunched up newspaper inside.
06:52That'll firstly absorb any loose water
06:54that's got into the sole of the shoe,
06:56and it'll help keep their shape as well as they dry.
07:00So, never buy a radiator and use a little bit of newspaper.
07:05The outsoles, these are spikeless,
07:06but if you make sure to spray them off
07:08after every round with one of those air sprayer thingies
07:11you'll probably get by the locker room,
07:12that's always great.
07:14And with spike shoes, a great way
07:15to sort of rejuvenate their life
07:17and give them another couple of years
07:18is to replace the spikes.
07:20It's something not a lot of us, I think,
07:21take advantage of.
07:2220 or 25 quid, spike remove them yourself.
07:25That'll give them a whole new lease of life
07:27and you'll really feel that grip.
07:29So, some really easy and straightforward ways
07:31to keep these beautiful shoes nice and clean.
07:34So, there you have it, my tips and tricks
07:35on how to keep your golf clubs, golf grips,
07:38and shoes as clean as possible.
07:40Now, it's really important we do this as much as we can.
07:44Performance from your golf club when they're clean,
07:46less flyers, more spin,
07:48especially with the grooves in your wedges,
07:51and keeping your grips nice and tacky
07:53should improve that feel when you're swinging the club.
07:57And with your shoes, keeping those outsoles
07:58as clear of mud and dirt as possible
08:00should give you better grip.
08:02Now, if you've got any tips and tricks
08:04about how you clean your golf clubs,
08:06some things passed down from people,
08:07some old wives' tales on how to keep
08:09these things looking shiny, let me know.
08:11I'd love to hear from you
08:13and try them out for myself.
08:14But for now, from Northamptonshire County Golf Club,
08:16thank you for joining me.
08:17I'll see you next time.
