00:00Oh, she's crying. She's crying.
00:02I found that so funny.
00:04You would find that funny.
00:05Because she's there.
00:06But I love you.
00:07I love you too.
00:08Hi, Teen Vogue. I'm Rachel Zegler.
00:10And I'm Kit Connor.
00:11And today we're going to be asking each other some questions.
00:14Ready?
00:15Did we get it? Okay.
00:16Alright, do it, do it.
00:24Are you more of a morning person or an evening person?
00:28If I'm doing a film, then I get very used to waking up very early.
00:32And I want to go to sleep as soon as possible.
00:35Yeah.
00:36At the moment, I'm quite enjoying the evenings.
00:39Right.
00:40Get home from the theatre.
00:41Chill.
00:42You know, watch some TV.
00:43Yeah.
00:44Eat some food.
00:45You and I debrief via text.
00:46You and I debrief over text.
00:48In bed by 2am.
00:49And I love sleeping in a little bit more.
00:51Yeah.
00:52Kit's very sweet and makes sure that I get in my car safe every night.
00:55And then I make sure that he gets home.
00:57And then I just ask him how he felt about the show.
00:59Just making sure that the show is still good.
01:01Yeah.
01:02That's really the main thing.
01:03And it is.
01:04Yeah.
01:05Alright, it's my question now.
01:09I think you think it's me.
01:11Because I have my doggie, Lenny.
01:13Sweetest boy in the world.
01:14And so I do love being home because I get to spend lots of time with the dog.
01:18But I can't express to you how much I've just been craving going out to a restaurant.
01:24I could cry about how much I miss going out for dinner.
01:27You sound like a mother.
01:29You sound like...
01:30I am.
01:31Yeah, you are.
01:32You're a dog mom.
01:33I am.
01:34But, I mean, like Lenny doesn't prevent me from going out to dinner.
01:35It's just that we've been very hard at work.
01:37Yeah, we've been busy.
01:38Yeah.
01:39But I do just really want to go have a nice chicken parm at Emilio's and...
01:43We'll go and do that.
01:44Yeah.
01:45We should do that soon.
01:46Okay.
01:48Who is the biggest prankster between the two of us and in the cast generally?
01:53I'm probably the biggest out of the two of us.
01:54It's you.
01:55Out of the two of us, it's absolutely you.
01:57Yeah.
01:58And then out of everyone, it's Gian, 100%.
02:00He has this bit where, like, you'll be in a scene.
02:05You're, like, crying or something.
02:07It's a really intense moment.
02:08And then he'll come up to you and just look you in the eyes and whisper,
02:12Wake up!
02:13As if you're in some kind of, like, trance.
02:15It's kind of incredible.
02:16It's just, like, it's so deeply unprofessional and so deeply brilliant.
02:21If you had to pick three songs that are always on repeat for you,
02:24what would they be?
02:25I look in People's Windows by Taylor Swift for her new album,
02:29Tortured Poets Department.
02:31I really love that song a lot.
02:32And it's a really beautiful song in context of her life, I think.
02:36Probably The Bomb by Florence and the Machine.
02:39And Graceland 2 by Phoebe Bridgers.
02:42It's beautiful.
02:43Fantastic answers.
02:45If you had to eat one thing every day for the rest of your life,
02:48what would it be and why?
02:50Is it a burger?
02:51Probably.
02:52I like burgers.
02:53Well, why?
02:54I mean, my uncle is a chef.
02:56He used to work at a restaurant in London called Patty and Bun,
03:01which I really like.
03:02And he, like, was the original head chef.
03:05So that was, like, one of my claims to fame as a kid was, like,
03:08this really great burger joint.
03:10You know, I like a relatively rare patty.
03:13Like, you know, medium rare.
03:14Medium gal.
03:15I like a good bit of topping.
03:16I love pickles.
03:17I love pickles.
03:18Yes.
03:19Absolutely.
03:20That's why I really like having pickles in there.
03:21Cheese or no cheese?
03:22Cheese.
03:23What kind?
03:24Whatever cheese they're offering.
03:25Generally, I'm, like, I'm game.
03:26Who is more likely to stop and take a picture with a fan in the street?
03:29You and I are both pretty pissed for saying no, though.
03:32I think you're better at it.
03:34Okay.
03:35Because I think you are, yeah, you're quite good at that.
03:38I really love meeting fans.
03:39Yeah.
03:40They're very sweet.
03:41I'm not very good at meeting new people.
03:42I don't think that's true.
03:43It's very true.
03:44But I have seen Kit in times that I've been like,
03:46we have to go to dinner, stop and take a photo.
03:48You're very gracious.
03:49Awesome.
03:50You're only human.
03:51I'm only human.
03:52Who's the most likely to show up to rehearsal late between the two of us?
03:55I've not showed up to rehearsal late once.
03:57I don't think you have.
03:58I've definitely gotten stuck in traffic.
04:00I always feel like I'm going to be late.
04:02You come in, like, an hour early to the theater.
04:04I come in, like, an hour early, yeah.
04:05But you also have fight call.
04:06I don't have that.
04:07Yeah.
04:08Even though I come in an hour before fight call.
04:09Yeah.
04:10It's professionalism, you know.
04:11Okay.
04:12Anyway, what's your favorite late night snack?
04:17Ooh.
04:18It's honestly the chocolate peanut butter cups from Trader Joe's right now.
04:22Ooh.
04:23But I have been coming home ravenously hungry from doing our show.
04:26So have I.
04:27And I usually, like, have, like, chicken lo mein or something.
04:29Mm.
04:30Cold chicken lo mein is, like, the best after show food ever.
04:34Name three of your favorite books that you would recommend to a stranger.
04:38So a stranger comes up to you.
04:40Quick.
04:41Name three books.
04:43I would recommend Stoner, which is currently what I'm reading.
04:46It's a really, like—
04:47By John Williams.
04:48It's by John Williams.
04:49It's, like, really very well written and very moving.
04:52Yeah.
04:53And the two books that I would also recommend are, like,
04:55A Bright Ray of Darkness by Ethan Hawke, which I've recommended, I think, several times before.
04:58He's a great author.
04:59Yeah.
05:00Yeah.
05:01And from an actor's perspective, I think these are really interesting.
05:03It's about doing Shakespeare and doing it on Broadway, which is kind of cool.
05:06Hey-o.
05:07And finally, another book about acting, because I'm an actor, is Letters from an Actor,
05:14which is a really fascinating book about the making of Richard Burton and John Gielgud's Hamlet.
05:23Wow.
05:24And it's kind of just filled with stories about Gielgud and Laurence Olivier and Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor.
05:31Awesome.
05:33What has been the rudest awakening or biggest surprise about performing on stage versus performing on screen?
05:41I think I was surprised about how much I missed it.
05:44I grew up on stage.
05:46I've been acting on stage since I'm 12 years old, and I haven't done it in six years.
05:51I was 17 the last time I was on stage.
05:53It was my senior year musical, Shrek, and it was so much fun.
05:58And I also didn't realize that it was just kind of like riding a bike and getting back into it.
06:02It didn't feel like I was dropped off a cliff or anything like that.
06:05It really felt like I was coming home.
06:07They're different muscles.
06:08They are different muscles, but it didn't feel sore the next day after flexing it.
06:13Do you know what I mean?
06:14Very metaphorical. I like it.
06:15Thanks.
06:16What's the perfect day off in New York for you? Have you even had one yet?
06:19Not really.
06:20This is our day off. We're here on our day off.
06:23This is the perfect New York day off.
06:26Yeah, my perfect day off is probably hanging out with my wonderful friend Michael.
06:31Michael!
06:32Michael Gandolfini.
06:33We love him so much.
06:34We shot a movie with him earlier this year.
06:36He's the best guy.
06:37He became one of my best friends, and I love him very, very much.
06:40I love it.
06:41That's probably one of my best days off.
06:43Do you have any theater superstitions or general superstitions?
06:46I don't like that we don't have a ghost light at the Circle in the Square.
06:49I don't like it.
06:50Why don't we have a ghost light?
06:51What is a ghost light, Rachel?
06:53Do you not know? You must.
06:54I know of a ghost light.
06:55Yeah, it is technically a theater superstition to ward off any bad juju.
07:02It honestly keeps away the bad actors.
07:04That's why. Oh my God, it all makes sense.
07:07Suddenly I realize I'm here.
07:09I realize why I got cast, because we don't have a ghost light.
07:11No, I mean, most theaters, even if they're not professional theaters, they have one.
07:15I have not seen one at Circle in the Square.
07:17I would never sleep in a theater.
07:19I really do think they are some of the most haunted places, in the best way.
07:22Yeah, I love it.
07:23But I would never sleep over in a theater.
07:24The Old Vic must be so haunted.
07:27That is crazy haunted.
07:29What's a funny story from our rehearsals that nobody else knows?
07:33Oh God, that is quite tricky.
07:35Yeah.
07:36A funny story from our rehearsals.
07:38I was talking to Rachel and we were talking about what it's going to feel like on our last performance.
07:45Bear in mind, we haven't even opened.
07:48We are here until February.
07:50So that's a long way away.
07:53And then she said that she's going to be really sad.
07:55There's a line in which she basically says,
07:57Will we ever see each other again?
07:59And she started crying at the thought of saying that line on the last night,
08:03which I thought was slightly...
08:05Oh, she's crying.
08:07She's crying.
08:08I love him.
08:09He's awesome.
08:10And the show is so much fun.
08:12Oh my God, see?
08:13I found that hilarious.
08:15I found that so funny.
08:17You would find that funny.
08:18Because she's there.
08:19But I love you.
08:20So what's your favorite scene to act in the show?
08:22Which one is the hardest for you?
08:24My favorite scene to act in the show is the balcony scene.
08:27That's my favorite scene.
08:29I think it's the easiest scene in the whole show for me
08:32because I get to play alongside Rachel.
08:35I think it's a wonderful...
08:36It's one of the best written scenes of all time.
08:40It's very funny.
08:41The audience are very fun to...
08:44They love Kit in that scene, bro.
08:46They love us both, I think.
08:48I think it's a nice...
08:49The audience seem to enjoy that scene,
08:51which is always a nice feeling.
08:52And I would say the hardest scene for me is...
08:56To be honest, the hardest scene for me is the death of...
09:00I can say this because it's a running joke.
09:01It's not a spoiler.
09:02The death of Mercutio.
09:03That is tough.
09:04The death of Mercutio is a really hard scene for me.
09:06Who between the two of us do you think is closest to our character?
09:10I think Sam really encouraged me to tap into as much of Rachel
09:15as I could for Juliette.
09:17It's very tricky to do.
09:18Juliette is 13 and I am not.
09:21I don't think you're like Romeo.
09:23No?
09:24No.
09:25I think you're much smarter.
09:26Oh, bless you. Thank you.
09:28And cooler.
09:29Like when you're upset, you don't hide in trees.
09:31Yeah.
09:32What is the secret to the perfect audition song?
09:37I wouldn't know.
09:38I'm going to be honest, I don't know.
09:39I auditioned for Broadway for so many years
09:42before getting West Side Story, the movie.
09:45And nobody wanted me.
09:46So I actually don't think I'm a good person to ask.
09:49I missed the section of auditioning for Snow White that was with music.
09:53I was only asked to audition after.
09:55And then when I did, it was a song that they had written for the movie.
09:58I think the first audition song I ever used
10:00when I was 12 years old,
10:01auditioning for a production of Fiddler on the Roof in my town,
10:04was Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again from Phantom of the Opera.
10:06But it's very overused, so don't do that.
10:08I'll keep that in mind.
10:10Yeah.
10:11I'm excited for when the musical theater girlies
10:15going in for their BFA audition
10:17are using one of the songs from Snow White
10:20because I know that there's going to be a 16-bar cut
10:22that they're going to use.
10:24I know what it is, and I can't wait.
10:26Love that.
10:28As you know, in Shakespearean times,
10:30men...
10:31What are you going to say?
10:33...originally played all-female roles.
10:35If you could play a female role in any show or film,
10:38what would it be and why?
10:40Yeah.
10:41Holly Golightly.
10:42Yeah.
10:43I think genuinely...
10:44I think you'd be so beautiful.
10:45...an incredible role.
10:46It is a great part.
10:47It's genuinely, like, such a brilliant role.
10:50Yeah.
10:51And she's fantastic in it.
10:52Yeah, if they ever did that again,
10:54we'd have to get rid of the Mickey Rooney part.
10:56Yeah.
10:57It's heinously offensive.
10:58Absolutely.
10:59And put you as Holly Golightly.
11:00100%.
11:01And I'll be the cat.
11:02Meow!
11:03So we can hang out.
11:04Yeah.
11:05Okay.
11:06In order to invoke tears on stage,
11:07what do you think of me?
11:10Well, I think of never seeing you again,
11:12and I cry.
11:13Oh, yes.
11:14No, I mean,
11:15I find deep empathy for this character.
11:18Like, I really do.
11:19I honestly just have to think of the fact
11:21that she's a child
11:22and all of the things that shouldn't be happening
11:25to a child that are in this play or in the world
11:27and just sob.
11:28It's quite simple for act two.
11:30Act two is my crying act.
11:32Likewise.
11:33Yeah, we really go through it, you know.
11:35That's how I felt with doing
11:36Maria in West Side Story as well.
11:37I just felt such deep empathy for her situation.
11:40And I used to think of, like,
11:41what she would say in her letter home to Puerto Rico
11:43to her dad.
11:44Her brother's dead.
11:45Her sister-in-law doesn't want to associate with her anymore.
11:49Her boyfriend's gone.
11:50Chino's in jail.
11:51Like, all of these things.
11:52It's just so, oh, it's so horrible, so.
11:55In your heart,
11:56do you think you're more of a Montague or a Capulet?
11:59Oh, Montague, for sure.
12:00Maybe it's because I read it in the mindset of Romeo,
12:03but, like, I do not like the Capulets.
12:05To be fair.
12:06I've got to be real.
12:07To be fair, like, the stakes of the original play are.
12:09The mom and dad are like.
12:10They're the worst.
12:11I do not like them.
12:12Yeah.
12:13You know?
12:14The stakes in the original play have a lot to do with class.
12:15Yeah.
12:16And the Capulets are, like, these, like, the rich ****.
12:18If you could be famous for anything other than acting,
12:20what would it be and why?
12:21Directing.
12:22I'd love to be.
12:23I'd love to be someday.
12:25Let's not.
12:26I'm not going to touch wood on that.
12:27No, but you're manifesting.
12:28But let's not jinx anything.
12:29But I'd love to direct someday,
12:30and I'd love for people to think that I was any good at it.
12:34But who knows?
12:35We'll see.
12:39What's a random talent you have that not many people know about?
12:42Or what's an unusual talent you wish you had?
12:44The truth is I don't have any talents.
12:46Can't you play guitar?
12:47No.
12:48Kind of?
12:49I don't know where this thing happened.
12:50There is a picture of you with an acoustic guitar that Sam found.
12:52Yeah, I can play, like, a little bit of guitar.
12:54Not well at all.
12:56But it's a secret?
12:57To call that a talent.
12:58Yeah, it's secret for a reason.
13:00Can I just say?
13:01Jack Antonoff tried to get me to play guitar in this show,
13:04and I literally just point blank was like,
13:06I can't do that.
13:07If you're going to have someone do a talent on Broadway,
13:11you should make sure that they are of Broadway standard.
13:15And, yeah, that's not me.
13:17If you were on The Great British Baking Show, which is...
13:20Oh, we do call it that here, but it is The Great British Bake Off.
13:22But, yeah, we call it The Great British Bake Off.
13:24But if you were on The Great British Baking Show,
13:26what challenge would you be most ready for?
13:29You used to like baking.
13:30You're more of a cook now.
13:31Wow, you do?
13:33I listen to everything people say,
13:35and then people get surprised when I...
13:36My mom is really excellent at baking.
13:39The chemistry of it all and the exact science of it all
13:41always, like, makes me scared
13:42because I really like to do my own thing.
13:44I also am terrified of making things from scratch.
13:46Like, I'm scared of, like, giving people food poisoning
13:48by making something from scratch.
13:50Flour is scary.
13:51Eggs are scary.
13:52Like, they're scary things.
13:53So I don't know if I would be very good at anything
13:56on The Great British Bake Off
13:57except for charming Paul Hollywood.
14:00And he loves brownies.
14:01I would fail so badly, yeah.
14:03Do you cook?
14:04Yeah, a little.
14:05When I'm at home.
14:06I can't wait to cook for Kit Conner.
14:08So who would be your dream to collaborate with on stage?
14:13On stage?
14:15That's a good question.
14:17Mark Rylance.
14:18Yeah, that's a titan.
14:20But so many.
14:21There are, like, there are so many people
14:23who I would just pinch myself to be on stage with.
14:26Josh O'Connor.
14:27I think he's one of the best actors of his generation.
14:31Othello Romeo.
14:32Would you rather be invisible
14:34for as long as you can hold your breath?
14:37That took me a second to read.
14:38Yeah.
14:39Or be able to fly,
14:40but only at the speed of which you can walk slash ride?
14:43Probably fly as fast as I could run.
14:45That'd be pretty cool.
14:46Because then I wouldn't exert as much energy.
14:48I would just fly.
14:49Either way, you're still, like, you're flying.
14:50Yeah.
14:51You know?
14:52Pretty cool.
14:53I don't really want to be invisible.
14:54Yeah.
14:55Between the two of us,
14:56would be most likely to survive in the zombie apocalypse,
14:59where would you be and what would you be doing?
15:02I mean, earlier this year, I did a film called Warfare.
15:06Warfare, Warfare, Warfare.
15:08But we did get, like, three weeks of training
15:11from, like, you know, Navy SEALs.
15:13So I think that would give me some kind of, some edge.
15:17Yeah.
15:18Although you were movie action star of the year.
15:23Hunger Games, baby.
15:24Hunger Games.
15:25And I did it in heels.
15:26Yeah, she did it at Hunger Games.
15:27So, you know, maybe...
15:28Could have done Warfare in heels.
15:30Yeah.
15:31There you go.
15:32I think I would be,
15:33if I were in the zombie apocalypse,
