00:00Hi, I'm health reporter Sarah McCann. People are being urged to stay away from a social
00:05media trend about vapes that is going viral because it could be dangerous.
00:11Videos depicting content creators dumping vapes into water have been circulating on
00:17social media with some racking up millions of views. Vapes are powered by lithium-ion batteries.
00:25Vapes do have a built-in safety mechanism. However, when lithium-ion batteries are
00:32submerged in water, they react unpredictably. If a damaged battery is disposed in a rubbish bin,
00:38it could possibly ignite and cause a fire. What makes this worse is that often after being
00:46dunked in water, the vapes are then disposed in a rubbish bin, which vaping expert Marcus
00:52Lindblad from VapeGlobe has described as a recipe for disaster. If you need to dispose of your vape,
00:59it's important that you do so safely. Never put lithium-ion batteries in household waste.
01:06There are lots of recycling schemes available to recycle your old vapes.
01:11To find out more, check out what's on offer at your local council's website.
