00:00Hello, I am Kika Rocha, Director of Fashion and Beauty at People in Spanish.
00:09It is an honor to be able to join the Telemundo family again and their program,
00:14Women Unstoppable, for a very special interview with a sensational woman.
00:20Today we are going to talk to the current Queen of the Universe, Miss Universe 2023,
00:25Janice Palacios. Welcome!
00:28Thank you, Kika. How wonderful it is to talk to you again.
00:32At the beginning of this reign, I had the opportunity to meet you
00:35and share one of the first interviews as Miss Universe.
00:38And now, who would say that fate brings us together again
00:42to end this beautiful experience and stage of my life.
00:45That's right, it has been brilliant, it has been a wonderful stage and I have followed you step by step.
00:51Also, my dear Janice, you have a historical honor
00:55of being the first woman from Nicaragua and Central America to win that title of Miss Universe.
01:01And now, as you say, the end of the reign is near
01:05and I want to know first how you feel before such a beautiful distinction
01:09and how that experience has been to this day.
01:13Happy, wonderful, it has exceeded absolutely all my expectations.
01:19Far beyond what I could imagine, what I could dream of at some point.
01:24I have the wonderful experience of growth that Miss Universe 2023 leaves me.
01:30To travel to my 23 and 24 years, more than 31 countries
01:35and to meet wonderful people all over the world.
01:39My girl, I have followed your account because I said,
01:42this is the most traveled Miss Universe and that's how it is.
01:46You are the queen who has visited the most countries
01:49and I do want to know about so many cultures,
01:51more than 30 places that you are mentioning to me.
01:54What has brought you so special as learning?
01:57So many beautiful people that you have seen on your journey around the universe.
02:02How to forget to have the opportunity to know so many wonders around the world.
02:08I was in Machu Picchu, I was in Victoria Falls,
02:11I was in the Taj Mahal, I was also in the Christ the Redeemer in Brazil.
02:15So having that memory forever in my heart is worth a lot.
02:20Also, every welcome in every country that I managed to visit,
02:24full of love, affection, support, a lot of beautiful energy
02:28that also filled me with energy to continue on this journey of being Miss Universe 2023.
02:34A wonderful year, victorious, full of a lot of success.
02:38And I have also seen you dressed in the typical costumes of each culture,
02:42looking gorgeous and supporting tradition, craftsmanship and local fashion.
02:48So bravo, bravo, Sheinys, because you did it spectacular.
02:53Well, now we are going to change to a very delicate topic that has also been your flag
02:58and it is this topic of mental health, one of the main causes that you have always been supporting.
03:05And that is why I want you to tell us why it has been so important for you
03:09and tell us precisely about those projects that you have led in this field of mental health.
03:14Every day we are more the ones who join this beautiful topic
03:19and of as much importance as mental health is.
03:22We open up to all those people who see us as a model to follow,
03:26who also fill us with motivation, but we are also an inspiration for them.
03:32And talking about these topics also makes us not be indifferent to something
03:36that so many followers, so many fans go through, which is mental health.
03:42This project began with personal experiences of anxious episodes, episodes of panic,
03:48suicidal thoughts too, and it has been so much the reception of the people
03:55who have felt identified with this topic that of course my job as a communicator
04:01is to inform, is to serve, is to send that message of truth to all those who are watching me
04:07and with this title that represents a lot at an international level, how was I not going to do it?
04:12Talking about mental health, we were celebrating very little time
04:16the International Mental Health Day, where we want to create greater sensitivity
04:21to all those people, that talking about mental health is not bad,
04:25going to therapy is not synonymous with madness, it is also being responsible with us
04:30to go in the direction of that construction of that society.
04:33After my universes, I will continue to flag this beautiful topic that deserves importance
04:39and deserves visibility in the whole world.
04:42And you are fulfilling that mission, because the question that follows is,
04:46do you think that Latinos in particular need to learn a little more about this mental health?
04:52In other words, do you feel the Latin culture a little more towards this topic?
04:57Because it is also an impact that has a lot of depth in our lives and in our families.
05:04What do you think? Do you think that Latinos need an even greater push?
05:09As a Latina, of course, yes, and it starts from early education.
05:14Psychologically, it is proven that from 0 to 7 years old, children are a sponge
05:20and it is crucial that at that time those children are educated with good values,
05:27with good principles, precisely avoiding those childhood wounds
05:32that will have an impact on a future, on their personality,
05:35on the decisions of what career they want to study and, of course,
05:39who they want to be for the future.
05:41It is vital that they start working on their mental health,
05:45that many more people join this issue and talk about it freely,
05:50that we break with that stigma and that stereotype
05:54that when you are talking about mental health, you want to draw attention.
05:58Obviously, I want to draw your attention so that you also realize
06:02that we are not far from your own reality, that we feel fear, that we feel joy,
06:07that we feel sadness too, that we also go through difficult moments
06:12with mental health, such as anxiety, depression, food disorders,
06:16relationships with emotional attachment, a number of issues of importance
06:20that are experienced in everyday life.
06:23So, we are not and we are not far from you.
06:26On the contrary, we are closer than you think.
06:29How nice.
06:30If you could summarize a specific message about mental health,
06:34what would that phrase be for you?
06:38Mental health is a universal right that we all deserve to exercise.
06:44How do we go to the doctor every six months?
06:46How do we brush our teeth every morning and every night?
06:49How do we brush our hair?
06:51How do women put on makeup every day?
06:53How do men dress formally?
06:56It is also important to go to therapy, to talk about our emotions
07:00and our feelings, because when we talk about our emotions,
07:04we are releasing everything that does not deserve to be loaded.
07:08And so we can continue to improve and find better impressions.
07:12Bravo, Reina. Very good.
07:14Let's talk about the purpose of the program
07:16of Women Without Borders of Telemundo,
07:18because the truth is that it comes behind that great motivation
07:21for women to move on, to be inspired,
07:24to go for more, regardless of any challenge that comes their way.
07:29Because you well know that no matter how perfect and beautiful
07:32a woman looks, life is not as perfect as it seems.
07:35Tell us a story or an example of a challenge that you have faced
07:40and that you have overcome.
07:43For no one, it is also a secret that during my year at Reinald
07:47as Miss Universe, my biggest challenge was precisely
07:50my anxious episodes.
07:52And I have been very responsible with my therapies
07:56to deal with each of these emotions that between so many trips,
08:01so many go and come.
08:03You get to be congested, you get to be frustrated.
08:06But I have been responsible and I have gone where those who know
08:09about these issues and studied to help me
08:12and to give me all those tips to be better
08:16and of course to perform as I have to do during my reign
08:19as Miss Universe 2023.
08:21The challenge of being able to have the balance
08:24between my mental health, between my work life,
08:28between my personal life and family life was complicated,
08:32but it was not impossible.
08:34And I know that many women in daily life also have to take care of their families,
08:38take care of themselves, of course, take care of their work.
08:41And among so many things to take care of, we forget about that
08:45which is so important, which is our mental health,
08:48which is to fill ourselves with self-love,
08:51to continue to fill ourselves with the power that lies within us
08:54through our voice.
08:56And that also makes us unstoppable women,
08:59that we are dedicating the necessary time to continue to grow,
09:03to continue to look for the best versions of ourselves
09:07to continue to give that contribution to the society that needs it so much.
09:11That's right, my girl.
09:13Speaking of those conquered dreams, you already have a very big one
09:16that is good to always remember.
09:19But speaking of those conquered dreams and Miss Universe,
09:22what do you think about the evolution of the contest,
09:24of all those doors that have been opened to invite new participants,
09:28without age limits, without limits for maternity?
09:32What do you think of that evolution of which you have been a witness
09:36because it was your turn to be part of all this?
09:39I am happy with this evolution that has given,
09:42beyond a beauty contest,
09:44a platform that celebrates female empowerment
09:48and each of the stories of women who belong year after year
09:52to Miss Universe and its 73 editions that we have completed this year
09:57based in Mexico.
09:59I am very happy that more women can have the opportunity
10:03to live this dream of representing their country,
10:06of representing their countries,
10:08that being a mother, being married,
10:10even being deaf or mute, having a disability or having vitiligo
10:15is an impediment to being on a platform
10:17where that female empowerment is celebrated.
10:20On the contrary, Miss Universe has shown that it has the doors open
10:23to receive all those women who are thirsty
10:26to empower the girls who see you.
10:28To all those unstoppable women like you, my dear Janice.
10:32Well, let's talk about an advice in particular
10:34that you would like to give precisely to those unstoppable women
10:37who are watching you right now,
10:39who admire you for all your achievements
10:42and some other aspirants who suddenly want to follow in your footsteps,
10:45be it in the contest or achieve a dream in a different direction.
10:50What would you tell them to be the first and to do it in their own way?
10:57As a woman, I know that we are surrounded by the simple fact of being a woman,
11:02the No.
11:03But also the voice that lies in each of us is stronger
11:08to turn that No into Yes.
11:10So, woman, even though they tell you that you can't,
11:13even though they tell you that they don't believe in your abilities,
11:15you have absolutely all the virtues,
11:17skills that you can enhance to prove to yourself
11:22that you are capable, that you can,
11:25because I don't get tired of saying that I believe in us,
11:28in each of us and in the power that lies in all of us.
11:32Because we are a volcano,
11:33and when that volcano decides to erupt,
11:36it doesn't leave anyone and we can change the world
11:40because it is giving us the opportunity to raise our voice.
11:43So beautiful.
11:44And you are really an example to follow.
11:46And speaking of examples to follow and goals to achieve,
11:49because you already have one as an unstoppable woman.
11:51What other goals do you have, Shainice?
11:53Where are we going to see you soon?
11:55What is being cooked out there?
11:57Tell us.
11:58I want to tell you that I am a social communicator
12:01and I wish with all my heart,
12:03in the time that I have left to live in this earthly plane,
12:08to be able to explore different areas of my profession as a communicator.
12:12To be in front of the screen, to be behind the screen,
12:16also to have the opportunity to write several books
12:19of different stories that I have to tell the world
12:22and, of course, to do it also through podcasts,
12:26that is, writing and radio.
12:28I wish to perform in everything that I am passionate about,
12:30modeling.
12:31An interest in acting is also awakening in me.
12:34So, where everything says I'm going there,
12:38I'm going to go there.
12:39Always keeping, obviously, my essence and what I am.
12:43Very good, very good.
12:44To continue, to continue conquering all those goals that you set for yourself
12:48and many more.
12:50Well, for now, getting closer to Miss Universe,
12:53we already know that we are going to see you in Mexico in November,
12:57placing that crown on the new Miss Universe.
13:01How exciting is it that you can tell us about this segment?
13:05How nice it is to be in Mexico.
13:08Many first times in this 73th edition of Miss Universe,
13:12based in Mexico.
13:13After 50 years, this country is returned,
13:16so loved by all Latinos as it is Cuba.
13:19First time breaking the record of Miss Universe,
13:22130 countries.
13:23First time also, my dear Kika,
13:26that it will be an opening dedicated to the host country
13:29and with that they give the guideline that every year also,
13:33each country has its own opening.
13:35Something never seen before
13:37and this opening will be produced by Emilio Estefan
13:40and we are going to have many artists
13:42that you are going to realize,
13:44obviously, through the official platforms of Miss Universe.
13:47You can't miss this event, which is scheduled for November 14th
13:51and the big final on November 16th,
13:54evidently broadcast by our home, Telemundo.
13:58How exciting!
13:59From there to rent a balcony, Janice.
14:01How beautiful!
14:02Well, you are going to build and we are going to look a little back,
14:05not so far back, but yes,
14:07see how this contest changed your life,
14:10see everything you have achieved,
14:12all the opportunities and the doors that open to you
14:15and that have opened to you.
14:17What makes you most proud of all this
14:20and what legacy are you going to leave in this beautiful and special reign?
14:25My roots, where I come from,
14:28where I am my beautiful land of lakes and volcanoes.
14:31This also made a before and after
14:34on the platform of Miss Universe.
14:36It made the girls around the world so motivated
14:41that because they come from a small country
14:43that has not won a crown,
14:45it is not an impediment to be the first time.
14:48If I achieved it, I can also achieve it
14:51different girls and women who have the desire
14:54to be the first of their countries.
14:56To fill my family with pride,
14:59to fill my countrymen with pride,
15:01those who are there in my beautiful country
15:03and also those who are around the world.
15:06That has been one of the greatest gifts
15:08that God has given me
15:10and an opportunity that has also expanded my mind.
15:13I have been able to visit so many countries,
15:16I have had the great blessing
15:18of being in Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America
15:22and the projects that are coming,
15:24I know that they will always be
15:26thanks to him.
15:27And my triumph, without a doubt,
15:29he owes it to him.
15:30What a beauty.
15:31You have been a universal queen
15:33and a queen for Latinos.
15:34Because when one of our countries wins,
15:36we all win.
15:37And we all vibrate with your joy
15:39and we are inspired with each achievement
15:42and with each step you take, Janice.
15:44So I congratulate you with all my heart
15:47and with all my admiration
15:48because you really did a job
15:51out of this world,
15:52out of the universe.
15:54So beautiful.
15:55Well, my Janice,
15:56and to close this dialogue,
15:58that we could stay here talking
16:01about beautiful things,
16:02about the trips,
16:03about the typical costumes,
16:04about everything I saw you wear,
16:05which is spectacular.
16:07But I want to ask you a couple of questions
16:09like this,
16:10in the style of Rapid Fire,
16:12to see what this Miss Universe
16:14is going to answer us.
16:15Ready?
16:16Ready.
16:17Ready?
16:18Let's go.
16:19If you could have a superpower,
16:22what would it be?
16:23Teleporting.
16:24Like Miss Universe,
16:25it would be super useful
16:27because I know that there are always
16:29so many activities
16:30that are in one
16:31and you fulfill them in another.
16:32And the traffic
16:33would be a really closed case.
16:36That's right.
16:37And all the countries in the universe
16:39would run out of you
16:40because you do it like this
16:41and you're done.
16:42Of course.
16:43From Kenya you go to Turkey,
16:44from Turkey you go to Mexico.
16:45Well, I like it,
16:46I ask for it.
16:47I would also like that same superpower.
16:50Let's go to the second one.
16:51If you could conquer a talent
16:54in an instant,
16:55what would it be?
16:56A talent in a single instant?
16:59Uh-huh.
17:00I think it would be doing multiple tasks
17:02at the same time.
17:03I could really solve my life
17:07and also be able to help other people.
17:09If I have that power,
17:11obviously it helps me,
17:12but it also helps the rest.
17:14Another one that I write down.
17:16I also like that one.
17:17Well, and lastly, my girl,
17:19three things you can't live without.
17:22I can't live without my Bible.
17:24It always travels with me
17:26to all the countries I've been to.
17:28I can't live without my diary either.
17:31I have an agenda
17:32where I write down any idea
17:34that comes to mind
17:35at midnight during a flight.
17:38And I can't live without my AirPods either.
17:41All the time I have an AirPods in my ear
17:43because my mom calls me
17:45to keep in touch with my family.
17:47My boyfriend calls me.
17:48So it makes me feel that closeness,
17:50that agility,
17:51that even the AirPods or the earphones
17:53read my message immediately.
17:55So cute.
17:56I even remember that for dizziness
17:58on long trips,
17:59you told me something about gum or mint.
18:01Also.
18:02Whenever there is a gum in my bag.
18:05Well, I could tell you
18:06everything I have in my bag.
18:07Thank you so much.
18:09Thank you, dear Janice,
18:11for joining us today
18:12to be a radiant example of energy,
18:15of love, of vitality
18:16for so many women,
18:18for our unstoppable women.
18:20And to you who are watching,
18:22remember that you have to watch
18:24Miss Universe
18:25this Saturday, November 16
18:28on Telemundo.
18:29A kiss, Janice.
18:31See you soon.
