00:46at the Amex where Brighton picked up a remarkable 2-1 win over Man City. Albion trailed to Erling
00:51Haaland's 23rd minute effort, but João Pedro and Matt O'Reilly struck in the second half
00:55to claim three points for Albion. It sounds like a deserved win, Darren. Sum that game
01:00up for us, please.
01:01Yeah, it was almost a mirror image of what happened at Liverpool when Brighton played
01:07really well in the first half and then suffered in the second half and then obviously came
01:12away with nothing from Anfield. It was the reverse at the Amex where they weren't...
01:17Well, actually Manchester City were very good. They did play very well in the first half,
01:21but Brighton were just a little bit off the pace. But it all changed around in the second
01:28half. They played much better and the crowd really, really played their part as well.
01:33I was speaking to Sam after the match and it's one of the best atmospheres I've seen
01:39up there at the Amex. And the way the crowd got behind them, that Brighton were playing
01:44on the front foot. And it was a really good watch and an impressive second-half performance.
01:52But overall, it was the substitutes that made the difference. I thought Carlos Boliva coming
01:59on in midfield for Yassin Ayari, who'd been booked in the first half. I think he made
02:05a huge difference. He just came into the team with the belief that he can change the game
02:12and he dominated the midfield. And then also, João Pedro came on, also got his goal as
02:20well. So, he's been out for the last six matches with an ankle injury after he was clattered
02:26in the later stages against Nottingham Forest. So, he came back, got his goal. And then Matt
02:32O'Reilly, the three substitutes all combined. It was Boliva into Pedro. Pedro fed it through
02:38to O'Reilly. And yeah, on his return as well, he got the winner. And it was thoroughly deserved.
02:46And I thought overall, it was a great performance. Bart Verbruggen, again, looked great in goal.
02:50Joel Veltman, Igor and van Gekker were great against Erling Haaland as well. And even saw Pep
02:59Guardiola have a bit of a meltdown at the end when he had a go at van Gekker, which I thought
03:04was unnecessary, really. I thought he was out of line, really, to really pick out van Gekker. And
03:11they were giving each other grief all the game, Erling Haaland and van Gekker and Igor. It was a
03:15real physical battle. And I just thought it was fair play to both. They were both a really good
03:22tussle. And I didn't see the need for Guardiola to really make a big deal of going out to van
03:29Gekker and publicly having a go at the Brighton player, who I thought played very well and
03:35handled that situation with Guardiola quite well. He looked quite, you know, it was all just a
03:41bizarre sort of exchange, really. So, but yeah, overall, a really great performance from Brighton
03:47and good to go into the international break on the back of that victory.
03:51Absolutely. Well, Man United and Spurs have already been beaten at the Amex this season, a sign of
03:55the confidence Brighton have on their own ground. But was this easily the most impressive victory of
04:00Fabian Hazala's short reign so far, Sam?
04:03I think it's got to go down as the best one. I think that Spurs game was epic in the way they
04:08did come back and win. So that was brilliant in its own right. But I think to beat Man City,
04:13regardless of what form they're in and what injuries they have, it's always going to be a huge
04:17victory. And for Herstler to beat Guardiola so early in his managerial career, in such a young
04:24age, it's brilliant. And it would only give him confidence going forward, I think. And as well as
04:28the players, they can take this really as a marker to show you can really can beat anyone when you
04:34play at your best. And in the second half, Brighton were at their best, really. They made Man City the
04:39bang average. I think, obviously, that wasn't the case early on, where City dominated the ball and
04:46they could have been two or three goals up. But Brighton did respond so well to that goal that City
04:51scored. But as Darren said, the real turning point was when Carlos Baleba came on at half time and
04:59completely changed the game. And I think with someone like him on your team, playing the way that
05:03Baleba is, and the confidence seems to be flowing through the Brighton players, I think, yeah, it just
05:08really goes to show you really can beat anyone. And obviously, Pep losing his fourth game on the bounce
05:13for the first time in his career, obviously probably had a bit of an impact on his behaviour at the end
05:17because he did lose the plot a little bit. And it was quite funny to speak to Van Hecker in the mix
05:24zone. Guardiola actually interrupted him again, kind of halfway through to kind of almost kind of
05:29sarcastically shake his hand and wish him best of luck. It didn't seem fully sincere. But yeah, so as
05:35Darren said, you don't really like to see that. And I don't think there was any need for it at all. I
05:39completely agree with that.
05:40But I love to see it. It's great. It's great. It's box office.
05:48Did he do it with Nathan Redmond?
05:50Nathan, yeah, yeah, he had a real go at it.
05:52And he's done other things like that. He's a bizarre character, isn't he?
05:55But yeah, yeah, sorry.
05:58Yeah, he's obviously under a lot of pressure. So I imagine that's probably probably had an impact on his
06:03behaviour, I guess. But yeah, a lot of problems for City, but all looking rosy for Brighton.
06:09It is indeed. And one of the promising signs from that game was Summer signing O'Reilly, who had been
06:15injured since his debut on the 27th of August. And he scored the winner with seven minutes to go to
06:19seal the win for Albion. Darren, how pleasing was it to see the former Celtic man make such a telling
06:24impact on the game following his injury, Rose? And I read that I think Azela and Danny Melbeck were on
06:28many who were so pleased for him at the end of the game.
06:31Yeah, yeah, for sure. And you can see why as well. It was a real blow for him. I think it was six
06:37minutes into his debut in the game against Crawley Town, Carabao Cup. He'd literally just arrived from
06:42Celtic the previous day, been on the pitch for six minutes. And then it was a Crawley Town captain,
06:47Jay Williams, who clattered into him. And he hobbled off.
06:51It was a good tackle, he just mistimed it.
06:55Sorry, I missed that.
06:56It was a good tackle, just mistimed.
06:58Just mistimed, he just mistimed it. Yeah. But it was, yeah, it was a crunching tackle and it put O'Reilly
07:08out. He was expected to be out until sort of December, January. He needed surgery on his ankle and then it was
07:13going to be a bit of a lengthy rehabilitation. But he came back ahead of schedule. And what a way to come back,
07:22just coming on, you know, in the closing stages and then getting the winner against the Premier League
07:28champions. It's really, you know, the sort of reward for all the hard work that he's put in to get back on the
07:36pitch. And I think Brighton fans can now look forward to, you know, seeing more of that as well and to have him back
07:43into the team and, you know, really going strong as you go into the sort of the festive fixtures. That's a real
07:49bonus for Brighton. But he's an interesting character, Matt O'Reilly. There's a good podcast on the Albion
07:57website where he's speaking about his sort of mindset throughout his recovery period. He's big into meditation.
08:03He's got this guy from India who's, who he speaks to, sort of this meditation guy. And he's always big into sort of
08:11this mental approach to the game. And he says that really helped him. So he said when all of his family were around him
08:19and other people around him sort of blaming Jay Williams and, you know, and he said there's a lot of ill feeling
08:25towards him from certain people that are close to him. But he, he said he sort of forgave him instantly. And he was
08:31just said that if he doesn't forgive him, then that would impact the way he recovers, which I thought was an
08:37interesting way of looking at it. So yeah, he's quite deep into all that. And he said it really helped him to come back
08:46stronger and fitter. But yeah, it's a good listen if you get a chance to look at it.
08:52So I enjoy it because Brighton fans clearly still haven't got over that tackle. And my favourite tweet was, I can't
09:00remember what somebody tweeted. It's like, oh, I take that Jay Williams kind of thing when Matt O'Reilly scored.
09:04And somebody replied, what a sad little life, Jane, which was referencing the come dine with me sort of thing.
09:13But yeah, just kind of things. Yes, it was a dreadful tackle. But these things happen in football. Yeah, you move on.
09:20And yeah, why are you talking about Jay Williams when you, well, he wasn't, but because he was asked about it. But why
09:26are you talking about Jay Williams when Matt O'Reilly just scored a win against Man City?
09:32Yeah, it seems an odd way to come at it, doesn't it? It does. Yeah, it really does. Yeah. And you're right. O'Reilly didn't come at it in that way.
09:42He was just, he was responding to a question.
09:46But Jay Williams is injured at the moment. So there you go. Irony.
09:49Karma coming around, some Albion fans would say. Yeah, absolutely. Another player who received heaps of praise following the City win we've spoken about him was midfielder Carlos Baleba.
10:02The likes of Danny Welbeck, Alan Shearer, Glenn Murray and Warren Aspinall have all been infusive in their praise for the young midfielder, with Aspinall saying the 20-year-old was already on par with ex-Albion man Moises Caicedo.
10:13Sam, how impressed have you been with Baleba? And do the Seagulls have another gem on their hands?
10:18They absolutely do. Yeah, I think he's been the star man of the season so far. He's added goals to his game as well. And he's just been absolutely classed for it.
10:27I think obviously a bit of a slow start to his Brighton career where he was kind of settling into a new country, new league.
10:32And it was always going to take time for him to become his best version of himself really. And he seems to really be on his way now.
10:40And he's shown some top quality performances and it didn't really get much better than that against Man City coming on at half time and completely changing the game.
10:48Because as I say, City were quite dominant for large parts of that first half and they did miss that kind of controlling presence in midfield to take control of things and take the pressure off other players by holding the ball up.
11:00And the way that he glides through players is just something to behold, really. I think he just gets the ball kind of defensive midfield and he can just run past the kind of four or five players and take them all out of the game.
11:11He can pick a pass short or long distance and split the fences open. And it's just his power and kind of how, yeah, just how much control he has of the midfield is really impressive.
11:23And he's only going to get better as well. So it was a really, really good performance against Man City. And I completely agree with all the praise.
11:30And as you mentioned, there was a bit of a segment on Matchday today where they talked about how quality of a performance it was and how much of a difference it made in the match.
11:37So, yeah, really, really promising signs. And it looks like Brighton have managed to find that replacement for Kai Seder, which was the big question was if they'd be able to do when he left.
11:45And it now finally seems like they have that ready-made replacement. And he could be even better. You never know. Time will tell how he develops.
11:53But obviously, Kai Seder really himself has become the player that we saw at Brighton and Chelsea. He's been really good for them this season as well.
11:59So, yeah, signs are really good. But I think you've also got to obviously praise the subs, obviously.
12:04Other subs, Jal Pedro and Matt O'Reilly for the impact they had. It's so good to have them back, really.
12:10I think obviously all the talk build-up was in the build-up was Pedro and O'Reilly being back in the squad.
12:16And I don't think anyone would have dreamed that they would be the two players to actually win the game kind of thing.
12:21So I think it's a really good day for Brighton on all fronts, really, getting these players back from injury. And it really does bode well for future games.
12:28Absolutely. Well, Albion go into the last international break of 2024, sixth in the Premier League.
12:33But they only trail third-placed Chelsea by virtue of goal difference.
12:36Deron, what do the Seagulls have to do with keep up the European chase impact?
12:40And do you think this young Brighton team could make it into the top four and maybe even challenge for the title?
12:47It's going to be very difficult. You know, you look at the teams above them, Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal.
12:55It's hard to break into that group, especially when they're such a young, you know, they're at the sort of the beginning of their sort of,
13:02you know, progress under Hersella with the players they have.
13:05But they've proved they're capable of competing with these teams.
13:08And now it's just about showing consistency, especially in the next run of games against, you know, Bournemouth, Southampton, Fulham, Leicester, Palace.
13:18You know that they're going to be the ones if they can come through that pretty much unscathed and be consistent in those run of matches.
13:24And they're going to be there or thereabouts. But having Lewis Dunk back, keeping Jal Pedro fit will certainly help their cause.
13:31But I think if I had to guess, I'd say top six, I'd say. And that would be a fantastic achievement, I think, this season.
13:39It would be indeed. Well, we're going to take a quick break. When we come back, we will talk all things Crawley Town.
13:45Welcome back to part two. We're going to dissect Crawley Town's week.
13:49And starting on Saturday, where Huddersfield twice fought back from a goal down to force a hard-fought 2-2 draw at Crawley in League One.
13:55Rusheon Hepburn-Murphy and Max Anderson netted for the Reds, but they were pegged back each time by the Terriers.
14:01Some of that performance up for us, Mark. On paper, it seemed like quite a good point for the Reds.
14:06Oh, really good point. And it was probably the best game I've seen at the Broadfield Stadium this year.
14:11Both sides really going for it. Huddersfield, really impressive side.
14:15And I think Rob Elliott said afterwards that he thinks they'll be, if not win it, certainly be in the top three or four.
14:23But it was really good performance from Crawley. And even there was a couple of fans at the end, because they all walked by the press box as they walk out.
14:33One gave me a thumbs up and said, I'll take that. And another one said, wow, what a performance. Absolutely brilliant kind of thing.
14:40And it really was. They played really well. 1-0 up at half-time. Really good goal from Hepburn-Murphy.
14:46And it was Will Swan and Ronan Darcy. Will Swan put a brilliant touch in. He was fouled, but the referee played on.
14:53But he got a little touch to Darcy. Darcy played a ball through and Hepburn-Murphy so quick.
14:58And it was one of those ones where you could see the defender running in with him and he got there first, just flicked over.
15:04He could have easily gone down. No, he carried on and from the tightest of angles curled it around the keeper.
15:09Lovely finish. But then straight after half-time, it was a really disappointing goal to concede.
15:14It was a header at the near post from a corner. But Crawley was still on top, but really attacking.
15:20And yeah, another really good goal. Harry Forster this time really did really good work down the right-hand side.
15:27Ball fouled to Ronan Darcy and he did a pinpoint pass to Anderson in the box and he just slid home.
15:33And you thought, here we go. This is one of those great days, that thing.
15:36And then literally a minute later, I actually missed the goal from Huddersfield because I was doing a live blog
15:41and typing up the goal saying, oh, what a wonderful goal. We're only one team. We're going to win it from here, kind of thing.
15:46And yeah, so I saw the goal. Yeah, it was just a really disappointing goal to concede again.
15:53But after that, it was all one-way traffic with Huddersfield and Crawley found a different way to play.
15:58And Elliot highlighted this afterwards, that they had to defend and sometimes they're going to have to really do that
16:04to save a point, save three points. And they did it really well Saturday.
16:08And certainly from a lot of set pieces, a lot of crosses into the box,
16:11which have been Crawley's biggest weak point this season, did really well.
16:17And actually, I think everybody was really happy with the performance and with the point at the end.
16:21Absolutely. Well, post-match, manager Rob Elliot singled out three Reds players for praise,
16:26which Crawley trio stood out to Elliot against Huddersfield. And do you agree with his appraisal?
16:32I did because I asked him about two of them, which I think instigated the praise.
16:36So first of all, he highlighted Max Anderson. He scored his first goal for the club,
16:41came from Dundee in the summer, midfielder. He's been playing really well.
16:45And he said he, Rob Elliot, thought he was unbelievable on the day.
16:49And he wasn't quite my man of the match, but he played really well.
16:52And yeah, he just, he's all over the park, defensively really good.
16:58But he always looks to be creative and sort of, once he gets the ball, if he's facing his own goal,
17:03he'll quickly turn and look and try and find that sort of pass to get another attack going.
17:07But it was a lovely finish to make it 2-1. But yeah, he's really good.
17:12Conor Truman, first, he's obviously come back in goalkeeper on emergency loan
17:17because of Jojo Wolcott's concussion from the maidenhead game.
17:21And he's now on international duty. So he's had to bring him back in.
17:24This first spell, he let in nine goals in two games.
17:27And you sort of, yeah, you weren't quite sure.
17:31But he's played really well in the couple of games he's played so far this time around.
17:37And in the first half, he pulled off a really good save when it was 1-0, I think, to Crawley.
17:43So it could have got how Huddersfield back into the game early on.
17:46But it was a brilliant save. And we interviewed him afterwards as well.
17:50And just what a lovely bloke he is as well. He just seemed like a really good character.
17:54What do you expect from a goalkeeper? Goalkeepers are normally a bit crazy.
17:58I wouldn't say he was crazy, but a really good personality.
18:01Played really well. And I think Rob Elliott's really glad to have him in.
18:05And who was the last one? Bradley Ibrahim. That was it.
18:10Yeah, with J Williams out injured, you need someone in that pivot,
18:14just breaking up play, breaking up attacks.
18:17But I think one thing Ibrahim's got maybe more than J Williams is that
18:23sort of drive to go forward as well. He got a bit of bite about him.
18:28Good tackler. But then on the ball, he's really good.
18:31I mean, he's an Arsenal youth, so you'd imagine a player like that, a midfielder,
18:35would be good on the ball. So, yeah, no, those three players played really well.
18:38I mean, they all played well. Ronan Darcy was excellent against both goals.
18:42But those three players, worth praising, I thought.
18:45Absolutely. Well, Tuesday night saw the Reds bow out of the greatest competition
18:49in the world, the AFL trophy, after a 2-1 defeat at League One leaders Wycombe.
18:54It looked like a valiant effort from a much-changed Crawley side,
18:57but obviously it wasn't to be on the night. How was it, Mark?
19:00How did you see that one?
19:01Yeah, it was like I think Rob Elliott said afterwards.
19:04It was just like a training session for him, really.
19:07I asked him before last week's press conference, I said,
19:10is it a game you could do without an e-source?
19:12He joked, am I allowed to say yes?
19:15I don't think he was a fan of the competition,
19:18and with all the injuries they've got.
19:21But, I mean, they played well. It's good to see Tolar show when we have a start
19:25and score. Elliott praised him yesterday in the press conference,
19:28looking to head to Bristol Rovers, says he's only going to get better and better.
19:33So we've got a piece going up in the next couple of days about Tolar.
19:38But, yeah, Conor Truman again saved a penalty.
19:41It was a really good free kick that gave Wickham the win.
19:45But Crawley could have got something out of it,
19:48but even a win, I don't think, would have got them through in the group.
19:51So they came out of it with no injuries,
19:54and I think that was the most important thing for them,
19:57especially with Bristol Rovers coming up on Saturday.
20:00Yeah, well, you mentioned it there, Elliott, as you said,
20:02compared the Wickham tie to a training day.
20:04And as you said, he seemed very happy to escape Adams Park with no injuries.
20:07Bigger fish to fry, Sam.
20:09It doesn't seem like there's going to be too much heartache
20:11about exiting the EFL trophy with a place in League One at stake.
20:15No, absolutely not. When you look at the league position,
20:18that has to take the priority.
20:20I think, obviously, the defeat to Wickham does mean they're unable
20:22to progress the knockout stages of the competition.
20:25But Elliott, as Mark says, not too bothered.
20:27He said he didn't like the competition as a player.
20:29It doesn't seem to have changed as a manager either.
20:32He said it is a great competition if you get through to the final stage.
20:35But for us at this moment in time, with the squad depth we have,
20:37there's pros and cons to everything.
20:39I think the most important thing is everyone comes through unscathed
20:42and they managed to give a debut as well to Tyrese John-Jules
20:45and he was pleased with his performance as well as the whole team.
20:49So he definitely took positives from it.
20:51But in terms of the result, I don't think it mattered at all in that sense.
20:55And apart from that, they've obviously had a good November.
20:59They're obviously unbeaten in the league with a couple of draws.
21:01So they're starting to get a bit of a run of gains
21:07where they're stemming that run of defeats they had.
21:10So hopefully they can build on this and turn those draws into wins.
21:15And that has to take the priority to get out of the relegation zone,
21:19starting with a trip to Bristol Rovers.
21:21Just worth saying, last year they did really well in the EFL Trophy.
21:25They got to the quarterfinals, I think, where they lost to Peterborough.
21:28And actually, it was sort of like the making of a few players
21:31like Joy McKenna, etc., came through because Scott Lindsay
21:34played a completely different side going through the competition.
21:37And so it does have its benefits when you've got a fully fit squad, I think.
21:40Yeah, absolutely. I think that's a very fair assessment.
21:44But the Reds have also been busy off the pitch this week,
21:47landing a new contract for one player while bidding farewell to another.
21:51What's the latest in terms of squad news at Crawley Town, Mark Dunford?
21:55Yeah, so the good news was that he had Yemo sign the new contract.
21:58He's the 26-year-old. He's now at the club until 2026.
22:02He scored twice this season, including the winner against Cambridge United
22:06in the second league game of the season. That was a cracking goal.
22:09I love watching him. When he's on form, he is a great player to watch.
22:13He skips past players. He's quick. He's got good feet.
22:16I think finishing is where he – his sort of final ball finishing
22:20is where he needs to improve. But really good player.
22:23Yeah, he's had a really interesting upbringing.
22:25He was at Millwall, but I think somebody told me that his parents
22:31wanted him to get a proper education before he went into full-time football.
22:35So he played for Cray Valley Paper Mills and then got the contract at Crawley.
22:44So, yeah, really good for him.
22:46On the flip side, we've seen Scott Malone released.
22:48It's been quite a long sort of unspoken about saga.
22:51He played the first couple of games.
22:53Now the club have announced that they've parted ways with him.
22:56There's not a lot more we can say. I've reached out to all parties involved
23:00and nobody can actually say anything at the moment about it.
23:04So I'm sure it will all come out at some point.
23:07But yeah, so at the moment, yeah, Scott Malone's left,
23:09which is a bit of a shame. Good experienced player.
23:12Absolutely. And this Saturday sees the Reds visit Bristol Rovers in League One.
23:16And Elliot has scored in his place to attack the game at the Memorial Stadium.
23:20Positive words from Elliot. Sam, how do you see this one going?
23:24Yeah, a tough one to call, actually, because Bristol Rovers have had a very
23:27up and down season. It's been very inconsistent from Bristol Rovers.
23:30They didn't win a single game in September.
23:34And then they started to improve a couple of wins at the start of October.
23:38And since then, it's been very up and down.
23:40So, yeah, it's a tough one to call.
23:42When you look at the league, Bristol Rovers are in 16th place with 17 points.
23:47So they're five points ahead of Crawley.
23:49And they've also played one game fewer.
23:51So they're obviously having a better season than Crawley when you look on paper.
23:55But you never know. I think Crawley, as we've mentioned,
23:58have got a little bit of form behind them.
24:00Obviously, lots of injuries. That's one thing that you obviously do worry about,
24:03the kind of squad depth they have.
24:06But yeah, I think the performances have been improved from a Crawley perspective.
24:09And you just hope that they manage to get the job done.
24:13But it's a really tough one to call, I think.
24:16If they get an early goal, obviously like they did before,
24:20I think, yeah, it could be one of those where they can nick it.
24:23But yeah, it's just important not to concede too early
24:26because then it could become one of those where they struggle to get back into the game.
24:29So, yeah, I think the first goal is the important one in this.
24:32And I look forward to seeing how it goes.
24:34Absolutely. And I'm going to put you on the spot now, Sam.
24:36Score predictions, Bristol Rovers, Crawley.
24:39How do you see that one going in terms of the scoreline?
24:42I'll be optimistic. I'll say 2-1. 2-1 Crawley.
24:46Mark, how do you see this one going?
24:49Yeah, I was going to go similar.
24:51Whether they can win there.
24:52And Rob Elliott was talking yesterday about how much of a hard place
24:55Memorial Ground is to go to.
24:58I'm going to go 1-1.
24:59And yeah, and I think that will be a positive result as well.
25:03But after that, Crawley have got Saturday, Saturday, Saturday.
