Whether you love it or hate it, there's no denying that Cyberpunk 2077 is a game that is full of details. The creators clearly put a lot of effort into creating a fully realized world, and there are all kinds of things that are easy to miss on the first play through. Of course, this is not a game for kids, but there are definitely some things in the game that only adults who are keeping an eye out will notice. From the traffic lights to the movie shout-outs, let's take a look at some things that only adults notice in Cyberpunk 2077.
Transcript
00:00Cyberpunk 2077 features a ton of content that could be considered inappropriate for younger
00:06players, including, of course, a slew of bare skin and plenty of, um, romantic enhancers,
00:13but there are other, less steamy details that are no less noticeable to adults only.
00:18As with any game, Cyberpunk 2077 features Easter eggs that are not only there to please
00:23gamers who are eagle-eyed enough to find them, but also to acknowledge pop-cultural influences,
00:29whether major or insignificant.
00:31Some of these references are best understood by people who have experienced the cyberpunk
00:35genre before, or at least understand the appeal of Sylvester Stallone.
00:39And no, we're not talking about Mortal Kombat 11 players.
00:42You heard about me?
00:45That your skills are formidable.
00:48The benefit of being a specialist.
00:50One of the Easter eggs found in the game has to do with a scene in 1993's Demolition Man,
00:55in which future cops in 2032 have to explain to Stallone's just-unfrozen character that
01:00they use seashells in the bathrooms instead of toilet paper.
01:03"...the place where you're supposed to have the toilet paper, you got this little shelf
01:07with three seashells on it."
01:09"...he doesn't know how to use the three seashells."
01:13In Cyberpunk 2077, you visit V's domicile, where the toilet does indeed include three
01:19seashells.
01:20Another Easter egg references the red and blue pills in the Matrix movies from 1999
01:25and 2003, which makes sense since Keanu Reeves plays Night City's Johnny Silverhand.
01:30Also, you'll see one clear reference to an influence of both Cyberpunk's creator Mike
01:35Pondsmith and cyberpunk in general, Blade Runner.
01:38In a section of Night City, you can find a character and some wall writing that evokes
01:42the 1982 film's final tears-in-rain scene in which the troubled replicant Roy Batty
01:48succumbs to his fate.
01:50It matters not if you're dead, as long as you're doing it in style.
01:55Cyberpunk 2077 is a huge, ambitious game with a massive amount of detail in a sprawling,
02:01open, explorable world.
02:03Developer CD Projekt Red clearly poured a lot of effort into making this game full of
02:07content in a seamless way that more careless players might not fully pass.
02:11For example, there's fashion.
02:13An official video from the Cyberpunk 2077 YouTube page calls style deeply linked with
02:18this history of the world and still important in every part of life.
02:22There are four different types — kitsch, entropism, neomilitarism, and neokitsch.
02:27Sadly, your choice of fashion doesn't seem to affect your cool stat — a combo of charisma
02:32and stealth — the way it might in real life.
02:35But that stat in itself is another little detail that makes this world both unique and
02:39thoughtful.
02:40Even the cars and vehicles have context and backstories in Cyberpunk 2077.
02:45The level of detail extends to the style of the car and how each vehicle drives.
02:50Every set of wheels feels different.
02:51Johnny Silverhand is known to drive a 1977 Porsche 911, which has been authentically
02:57remade for the game.
02:59Video game life diverges from reality in many interesting ways, some good and some bad.
03:05A particular idiosyncrasy of Cyberpunk 2077 that can be filed under Things I Wish Happened
03:10to Me IRL all the time is the fact that the traffic lights in the game always turn green
03:15as you approach them in your vehicle.
03:17Multiple people have noticed this phenomenon, according to several Reddit threads.
03:22The street lights in Night City are apparently so well-synchronized that getting around doesn't
03:26require you to slow down at all, unless you're coming up too fast or at an angle that the
03:31game's AI hasn't quite figured out.
03:33As gamers have pointed out, though, this could mean Cyberpunk 2077 doesn't really have much
03:38of a traffic system, or its driving AI is imperfect.
03:42Some people have also felt that the realism of the game is negatively affected by this
03:46lack of a real-life obstacle.
03:48On the other hand, this can be very helpful if you're, say, hauling an injured sidekick
03:52to the closest Ripperdoc, hopefully in time to save his life.
03:55No, no, no, no, no.
03:57Okay, get to a clinic.
03:58Now.
03:59Mr. Wells' condition is critical.
04:01GO!
04:02While everyone marvels at the amount of imagination involved in the world-building that's being
04:06done in Cyberpunk 2077, some may have missed how political it is.
04:10The stories that take place in Night City focus on power disparities in a dystopian
04:15world, broadcasting a warning about where humans are headed as well as making a statement
04:20on society's current condition.
04:22Mike Pondsmith explained to NME,
04:24"...Cyberpunk is political, but it's not political in a blue-state, red-state, conservative,
04:29liberal way.
04:30It is basically that people deserve to be able to get a decent meal, live in a decent
04:34place and do all that if they're willing to work for it and not get screwed over by
04:38people more powerful than they are."
04:40"...Cyberpunk isn't about saving humanity, it's about saving yourself."
04:44Cyberpunk 2077's quest designer Patrick Mills also addressed the topic in 2018.
04:49He told the official Xbox magazine,
04:51"...the original Cyberpunk 2020 setting was a complex critique of the author's world,
04:56and we don't shy away from that in our games.
04:58On the contrary, I think it's one of the things that sets us apart.
05:02Cyberpunk is an inherently political genre, and it's an inherently political franchise."
05:07As it turns out, people in Night City communicate the same way people in real life do — through
05:12email.
05:13And as in the present-day world, citizens of the neon-filled future often get unwanted
05:17spam along with their important notifications.
05:20If you go to V's computer and check your email while you're at your character's apartment,
05:24you'll discover a few messages you can laugh at and then basically ignore, including an
05:29ad for a buy-two-tickets-get-one-free raffle for medical services, a scam alert on, um,
05:34enhancement nanogel, and a malware notice alerting the user to attempts at accessing
05:39their personal information.
05:42Sounds pretty familiar, right?
05:44Cyberpunk 2077 life might be set many fictional years in the future, but apparently the people
05:49in charge still haven't quite figured out how to rid inboxes of ads, phishing scams,
05:53and hoaxes designed to take advantage of gullible folks.
05:57Actually, since it's the corporations that run the place, they might even be the ones
06:00sending these things out.
06:02Think there could be a Nigerian prince languishing somewhere in the cyberpunk universe?
