00:00Pavement widening on a Leeds city centre street has been planned in a bid to boost safety and prevent illegal parking.
00:07Leeds City Council said there were safety issues on Mill Hill near Leeds train station because the narrow pavement forces people to walk in the road.
00:15The council is planning to widen the footway on the east side of the street from 1.5 metres to around 3 metres.
00:22The road will be narrowed and removable bollards installed to prevent vehicles mounting the kerb.
00:28A council report said there have been five traffic collisions on the street since 2019.
00:33It added that safety problems were exacerbated by commercial waste bins on the pavement and vehicles using the kerb for deliveries.
00:40The £140,000 project is planned for early 2025 and will see the street temporarily closed to traffic.
00:47The report said Mill Hill will become a main pedestrian route into the city centre following work to transform the main entrance to Leeds station.
00:55The ongoing project includes new walking routes and lifts.
