00:00The origin of A Real Pain is really my family's history.
00:05My family lived in this town of Krasnostaw,
00:07where the characters in the movie actually visit,
00:09in southeastern Poland.
00:10Okay, wait, I think it should be around this way.
00:12Filming in Poland was a complete adventure.
00:15I could not have loved the people more.
00:18I'm so happy to be here with you right now.
00:20Poland for Benji is a great opportunity and excuse
00:24to just be with his cousin,
00:25who he considers to be like a brother,
00:27closest person to him.
00:28This is a monument that celebrates the Jewish heroes
00:30who fought back against the Nazis.
00:32I was grateful to be a part of the film
00:34for all kinds of reasons,
00:35not least because it gave me the chance
00:37to kind of learn about this history
00:39and to visit these sites.
00:40As we pass through, I want you to try to imagine
00:42what life was like hundreds of years ago.
00:44I wanted this to show Poland in a way
00:46that feels like you're a tourist there.
00:52As a director, I kind of just tried to figure out
00:55how can we show Poland in a really beautiful light
00:58and from the perspective of somebody
01:00who's looking back on their family history.
01:02Magistrat. What do you think that means?
01:04I think magistrate.
01:05Poland is sort of a character in this film,
01:08and I think the way that the film captures Poland
01:11is powerful and memorable.
01:13Benji and I were just discussing various theories
01:15about this tradition, but personally,
01:17I like to think it's just a warm gesture
01:20to say, uh, you're not forgotten.
01:22It was just this ultimately beautiful way
01:24of experiencing Poland the way most people experience it,
01:27and the fact that it's set on this Polish history tour
01:30gives it a lot of weight.
01:32It's not a movie that is extravagant in any way.
01:35It's personal. It's based on personal themes,
01:37and so people experience it in those personal ways.
