00:00:00At Skating, PJ here, otherwise known as PJ Kuang, and I am here with one of my favorite people,
00:00:05Adam Shoemaker from Jackson Skates, one of the proud partners of Skate Ontario. Adam,
00:00:10thank you for talking to me today. Thank you so much. I always enjoy having a conversation with
00:00:14you. Well, how many rinks do we see each other in in the background? A lot. At the end of the day,
00:00:18we always joke, another rink, another weekend. Here we are. That is for sure. We are in Oshawa
00:00:25and we are here for the Junior and Senior Skate Ontario Sectional Championships.
00:00:29What can you tell me about Jackson's involvement? You are here as a, not a vendor, supplier,
00:00:35whatever. What do we call that? When you are out there in the lobby and people can come see you.
00:00:40I am here as part of the program, part of what Skate Ontario, what Skate Canada,
00:00:44what everybody is doing in skating. I am here to help our athletes to provide whatever we are doing
00:00:50with the correct information to support. Anybody has a problem, they come to me and they know that
00:00:56they can count on whatever we need to do to help them get back on the ice and make sure they are
00:00:59competing properly. After all, this guy is a problem solver extraordinaire. So, let's talk
00:01:05a little bit about your involvement with Skate Ontario. As I mentioned, you are a partner,
00:01:09but you are also sort of the proud partner of our club modernization project. Yes. So,
00:01:15what we are trying to do is we are trying to bring some clubs that are looking for help with their
00:01:19resources. We are trying to bring them into 2024. So, talk to me about what you guys are doing.
00:01:26The amazing partnership that we are able to put together with this is that we are able to provide
00:01:31the correct information to get quality skates on our skaters' feet to help them provide
00:01:35everything that we are doing. As skaters are developing, we need to make sure that they have
00:01:40the tools to be able to do the stuff to make it fun, to make it easy. We want that positive
00:01:44experience all the time on the ice. So, by us working together with Skate Ontario to be able
00:01:49to get the skaters on the ice, we all have a great time. We do indeed. Scott Ratchak, who's our
00:01:55high performance director, he is up to his elbows in this, that's for sure. This is really important
00:02:02to him. And all of us as former skaters, we cannot underestimate the value of good equipment.
00:02:08So, talk to me about the different levels that Jackson has. So, absolutely. Scott is driving hard to
00:02:14be able to keep our skaters absolutely performing at their best. We want them to, first of all, we
00:02:21always go back to that fun aspect, that fun part of skating, the whole joy of why we're here in the
00:02:25first place. Everything that we build from our recreational stuff up to our top level, Olympic
00:02:31level, competitive. We have many skaters who've won Olympic champions on our stuff and been with
00:02:36us for their whole skating career. Going through the proper support, the proper fit, all the tools
00:02:42set up, doing the right thing. Now, for coaches, you have equipment for coaches, I was one of them,
00:02:50but I know that for the coaches, it's really important for them to understand the value of
00:02:54good equipment. Can you talk to me about that? Certainly. Helping the coaches to be able to
00:02:59understand the different levels and the different support levels, different pick profiles, rocker
00:03:03profiles, to be able to best suit what that skater needs to be able to do their specific
00:03:09job on the ice. Every skater is different, every skater has their own individual
00:03:14setup that they require because we're not all the same. You're different, you like the things you
00:03:18like, I'm different, I like the things that I like. My skating style requires a certain
00:03:23setup, a certain support level in the boot and a certain pick profile to be able to help me do my
00:03:29job. That's where bringing the education pieces out to be able to help you understand why option
00:03:37A, option B and option C are different, but they're also going to help all your skaters do the right
00:03:41things. As skaters get further into development in Skate Ontario and figure skating in their clubs,
00:03:48in this club modernization project, one of the things that I think that maybe people who don't
00:03:52know figure skating won't understand is that it's not a boot as a boot is a boot as a boot,
00:03:58which is not the same as about, which is a different Canadian accent, but I'm talking
00:04:02about we have lots of different disciplines within figure skating. We've got single skating,
00:04:06we've got pair skating, we've got ice dance, we've got synchronized skating.
00:04:10Are there, is there equipment to sort of suit all of those different scenarios? Absolutely, yes.
00:04:16Once we get in, once we get beyond that learn to skate program and introducing to that star
00:04:21skate as we're developing into not just learn to skate as now we're becoming athletes,
00:04:28different designs, different boot profiles are built to specialize and work for that skater's
00:04:36specific requirements. Ice dance, typically traditionally they want a little bit more
00:04:41flexion, a little bit more toe point extension to really have that long line. And a shorter boot.
00:04:45And that's where that shorter boot design comes in, is that allows for that full extension of the
00:04:51toe, making it look pretty, making it look fantastic, making it look amazing on the ice.
00:04:56Whereas a free skater or a single skater or a pair skater, they're traditionally wanting a
00:05:01little bit higher boot because they need the support and the control to be able to have
00:05:04their ankles in position on the landing of every jump, on the man's feet, underneath the lift and
00:05:12everything that they are, have their skates going where they need them to go. And what about
00:05:17synchro skating? Synchro skating, that's a little bit of a hybrid because you've got many different
00:05:23parts on the ice on that team. So you have your bases, your lifters on the ice, you have your
00:05:28flyers who are the team, the skaters that are in the air. You have the other elements that come
00:05:33into play. So we have actually a wide variety of different types of skates on the whole team.
00:05:38Some are in the lower cut because they are the flyers or they're the desk spirals. And then the
00:05:44other ones who are the bases who are doing the other part, they have a little bit higher
00:05:48traditionally to be able to have the support and control for their skaters or for their teammates
00:05:52that are above their head. Let's say I'm in one of those club modernization clubs. Are the
00:05:58coaches able to access equipment as well? I know that I have two different pair of Jackson skates,
00:06:03one leather and one that sort of soft tech, I think it's called. Super comfortable, it's like
00:06:07wearing pajamas. Not pajamas, slippers. Slippers. Not pajamas. Anyway, what can you say to the
00:06:14coaches about their own equipment, the importance of it? Well, the importance of comfort. First and
00:06:19foremost, we want the coaches to be pleased and happy on the ice. An uncomfortable pair of skates
00:06:25makes your work environment very challenging, very unhappy because would you go out and have
00:06:32an uncomfortable pair of shoes on your feet when you're doing anything else? No. On the ice, helping
00:06:36your skaters, helping the club do all the things, proper fitting, proper support, not necessarily
00:06:43maybe a little bit softer so it's not too stiff, but also supportive enough so you can still
00:06:47demonstrate all your elements to your skaters, making sure that they have everything that were
00:06:51happening. So just like with the club modernization program, for people looking for skates, they get
00:06:57to go where to find Jackson Skates? Well, we can go to any one of our Jackson Authorized Retailers.
00:07:02You can go to our website and go to our Find a Dealer section and connect with any one of them
00:07:07and they'll be able to help you out. And that website is? JacksonUltima.com. Wonderful. Ultima
00:07:12with a U, not an A. Ultima, yes. Ultima. I am Skating PJ. I would like to thank Adam Shoemaker
00:07:19for taking the time to speak with me today. Jackson Skates, come visit him. We're here in
00:07:23Oshawa. Bye for now. Thanks, PJ.
