On July 25th, 1691 (12th July on the old calendar), the Battle of Aughrim unfolded in County Galway, Ireland, one of the bloodiest and most significant conflicts of the Williamite War. Around 35,000 soldiers from eight nations, divided in their loyalties between William of Orange and King James II, clashed in a brutal fight that left up to 7,000 men dead. Many of the fallen soldiers were left on the field to rot, and their souls are believed to linger in the haunted land of Aughrim to this day.
