Nearly half of EU youngsters exposed to online abuse, new report finds

Most abuse messages target social, political and sexual orientations.

00:09Young Europeans are still hugely exposed to online hate speech.

00:14In 2023, almost half of the EU population aged 16 to 29 came across online messages

00:28The highest rates were found in Estonia, Denmark, Finland, France and Slovakia.

00:3612 out of the 23 countries with available data recorded shares above 50%.

00:44On the opposite side of the spectrum, Croatia, Romania and Bulgaria

00:51are the only countries where less than a third of people got exposed to hate speech.

00:57In most cases, hate speech was related to political or social views,

01:04with an average of 35% across the block.

01:09This category was the largest in Estonia, Finland and Denmark.

01:15Hostile messages towards the LGBTQ plus category reached 32% of EU young adults.

01:24The highest shares were reported in Estonia, Slovakia and Portugal.
