Australia Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Thursday (Nov 7) the government would legislate for a ban on social media for children under 16, a policy the government says is world-leading.

Legislation will be introduced into parliament this year, with the laws coming into effect 12 months after it is ratified by lawmakers, Albanese told a news conference.

00:07Social media is doing harm to our kids, and I'm calling time on it.
00:12I've spoken to thousands of parents, grandparents, aunties and uncles.
00:16They, like me, are worried sick about the safety of our kids online.
00:21And I want Australian parents and families to know that the government has your back.
00:27Now, government's proposed age is 16.
00:31That decision was made in Cabinet on Monday.
00:36And that proposal will go to the national Cabinet meeting that I'm convening online,
00:42a virtual meeting tomorrow morning.
00:44The onus will be on, just to go through some of the details, the onus will be on social
00:50media platforms to demonstrate they are taking reasonable steps to prevent access.
00:55The onus won't be on parents or young people.
00:59There will be no penalties for users.
