00:00I want to thank you. I will not let you down. America's future will be bigger, better, bolder,
00:05richer, safer and stronger than it has ever been before.
00:10Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're breaking down the factors that led to former President
00:15Donald Trump winning the 2024 election to become the 47th president of the United States,
00:20defeating Vice President Kamala Harris.
00:22Let me tell you, we have a new star. A star is born, Elon.
00:30America's Rightward Shift
00:42As reported by The New York Times' Reid J. Epstein, President-elect Trump won Florida,
00:47Ohio and Texas by over 10 percentage points each. While that in itself might not have
00:51been terribly shocking, Epstein noted that, quote, blue states shifted too.
00:56New York moved 13 points toward him, and Virginia shifted six points in his direction.
01:01Look, just 28% of Americans, voters, think the country is going in the right direction,
01:09is on the right track. And I want you to put that into a historical perspective for you.
01:13This shift, which reportedly blindsided Democrats and their supporters,
01:17would appear to stem from voter dissatisfaction with the Biden presidency.
01:21VP Harris notably struggled to convince the public that her administration would
01:25differ significantly from President Biden's. Overall, Democrats underestimated Trump's
01:30appeal as a political outsider, costing them the election.
01:33The fundamental, the original sin here, that Biden stayed in the race when perhaps he should
01:38have stepped aside and had an open primary, and perhaps Democrats would have had a better shot.
01:42Florida and Ohio go reliably red.
01:44I want to thank the American people for the extraordinary honor of being
01:49elected your 47th president and your 45th president.
01:55While it may seem like a distant memory in 2024 when Trump won both states by double digits,
02:01there was a time when the now solidly red states of Ohio and Florida were actually
02:05battleground zones where Democrats also stood a chance. However, in recent years,
02:10the states have moved decisively to the right.
02:12And every citizen, I will fight for you, for your family and your future.
02:18Every single day I will be fighting for you and with every breath in my body.
02:24As reported by CNN's Eric Bradner, Gregory Krieg and Daniel Strauss,
02:29quote, Florida could be on track to become the next Texas,
02:32poised for a generation of Republican dominance built on a coalition of older,
02:36non-college educated voters, younger Hispanic voters,
02:39conservatives migrating from other states and more.
02:42Most damningly for Democrats, CNN wrote that Miami-Dade County,
02:46which Hillary Clinton won overwhelmingly in 2016, was taken handily by Trump in 2024.
02:52I will not rest until we have delivered the strong, safe and prosperous America
02:57that our children deserve and that you deserve.
03:01This will truly be the golden age of America. That's what we have to have.
03:06Roe v. Wade fallout wasn't enough for Democrats.
03:10This is a magnificent victory for the American people
03:14that will allow us to make America great again.
03:20Over the course of his 2024 presidential campaign,
03:23abortion was one issue that Trump consistently faced backlash on,
03:26regardless of party affiliations.
03:28While the president-elect has gone back and forth on his personal position,
03:32seemingly favoring leaving the procedure up to the states,
03:35it's inarguable that Republican opposition to abortion galvanized Harris voters.
03:40Two people who are answering this excerpt,
03:41well you've got the state of democracy, 35 percent,
03:44the economy, 31 percent, immigration, 11 percent, and abortion, 14 percent.
03:49Ultimately, however,
03:50Harris' reliance on the issue to topple the Trump empire proved to be an unsuccessful maneuver.
03:56We'll get into the specifics of the Trump campaign's primary issues a bit later,
04:00but for now, it seems that the Democrats' banking on voter outrage
04:03with regard to abortion was not sufficient motivation to swing the public their way,
04:08despite major gains off the back of the issue in 2022.
04:11Again, you might look at that and think state of democracy and abortion,
04:14those are issues that should favor Kamala Harris,
04:16where you've got the economy and immigration for Donald Trump,
04:19that's still a really, really big, important chunk.
04:21The political gender gap.
04:23America has given us an unprecedented and powerful mandate.
04:30We have taken back control of the Senate.
04:34Wow, that's good.
04:36For the second time in eight years and three presidential elections,
04:40Donald Trump won a considerable victory over a female Democratic candidate.
04:44According to CNN's exit polling, voting was polarized along gender lines,
04:49with men voting overwhelmingly for Trump and women for Harris.
04:52We know it is time for a new generation of leadership in America.
04:59It's crucially important to point out that the Trump campaign leveraged the internet
05:03to reach out to young men.
05:04Having the former president appear on wildly popular podcasts
05:07hosted by comedians Joe Rogan and Theo Vaughn.
05:10In addition, Trump also benefited greatly from his Elon Musk endorsement.
05:14The world's richest man poured over $100 million into a super PAC supporting Trump,
05:19and also made use of the social media platform X, which he owns.
05:23Now remember, young men, they don't vote a ton.
05:25They're not showing up every four years to get out there and cast their ballot.
05:29But the Trump campaign ID'd them as somebody who could,
05:31as this demographic group who they could try to turn out.
05:34The Trump campaign successfully courted Latino voters.
05:37We've been talking about this political realignment,
05:39the fact that he expanded his support among Latino voters.
05:43He expanded his support among non-white voters,
05:46something that we just didn't think we would see.
05:49After significantly losing the Latino male vote to President Biden in 2020,
05:54Trump did his best to make up for lost time in 2024.
05:57His subsequent efforts to court men of color were an overwhelming success.
06:01Trump won Latino men by eight points in 2024,
06:05with a huge chunk of those votes coming from Florida and Texas.
06:08In every single speech over the last few years, he would say,
06:12we had the greatest economy.
06:13We had the greatest economy.
06:15And I think a lot of people really believed that in the end.
06:19In a stark but illuminating contrast,
06:21Vice President Harris predictably won the Democratic stronghold that is California,
06:26but as noted by Axios,
06:27quote,
06:28appeared to be underperforming Biden's 2020 numbers
06:31in several other heavily Latino areas,
06:33including Merced County,
06:35where 64% of the population is Latino.
06:38We're going to make it the best it's ever been.
06:40We can do that.
06:40We just, if we had to wait longer,
06:43I don't know.
06:44It was going bad and it was going bad fast.
06:46Republicans reclaimed the Senate.
06:48The Democrats were hoping to hold on to states,
06:50those Midwestern states,
06:52that even if Trump won them,
06:53well, it's looking like they're going to take all those states,
06:56possibly Nevada as well.
06:57You could be looking at 56 seats in the Senate for the Republicans.
07:00That would be the biggest number of seats they've had,
07:02I think, in at least 20 years.
07:04In yet another sign of general voter unhappiness and malaise,
07:07Republicans made major gains
07:09following closely watched Senate races in Montana,
07:12Ohio and West Virginia.
07:14At the time of writing,
07:15control of the House of Representatives,
07:17where Republicans already have a majority,
07:19hadn't yet been determined.
07:21But as noted by Reuters,
07:22Republican victory there would quote,
07:24help Trump deliver on his promise to slash taxes
07:27and restrict immigration
07:28for at least the next two years
07:30until the 2026 midterm elections.
07:32However, it seems worth pointing out
07:34that despite their overall control of the Senate,
07:37quote,
07:37Republicans will not secure the 60 vote majority
07:40needed to advance most legislation in the chamber.
07:43We're going to pay you back.
07:44We are going to do the best job.
07:46We're going to turn it around.
07:48It's got to be turned around.
07:50It's got to be turned around fast.
07:51And we're going to turn it around.
07:53We're going to do it in every way,
07:54with so many ways,
07:55but we're going to do it in every way.
07:57Voter frustration with the Biden administration.
08:00This is about what the Democrats did while in office
08:03over the last four years.
08:06Inflation, which was so high
08:09during much of this administration.
08:11And many people are still feeling the pain of that.
08:15Democrats are surely licking their wounds
08:17at what comes as a devastating defeat to them,
08:20a rebuttal by voters to four years under Joe Biden.
08:23However, we're not sure they should be terribly surprised.
08:26For years, the party seemed to dismiss
08:28public and political concerns
08:30about President Biden's cognitive abilities,
08:32as well as his advanced age.
08:34At the time, Biden was the oldest elected president.
08:38He has since been surpassed by Trump.
08:40On behalf of this great group of people,
08:42these are hardworking people.
08:43These are fantastic people.
08:45And we could add a few names
08:48like Robert F. Kennedy Jr., he came in.
08:52Similarly, although Biden is credited
08:54with reducing inflation
08:55and helping to lead the country to recovery
08:57following the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic,
08:59the American people can't help but express anger,
09:02frustration, and fear at an unstable housing market
09:05and the sky-high prices of food and gas.
09:08We're going to be paying down debt.
09:09We're going to be reducing taxes.
09:12We can do things that nobody else can do.
09:14Nobody else is going to be able to do it.
09:16China doesn't have what we have.
09:18Nobody has what we have.

09:35Immigration and the Economy
09:37That is where cost of living,
09:39the wages and wage growth
09:41has not kept up with cost of living.
09:43The darker the county,
09:44the more difficult it has been
09:46for the people that live in that county.
09:48It speaks volumes about the mindset
09:50of the general American public
09:51that Trump could be
09:52the first Republican president
09:53since George W. Bush in 2004
09:56to win the popular vote,
09:57a feat the president-elect
09:59couldn't even achieve in his first term
10:01when he decisively lost
10:02the popular vote to Hillary Clinton.
10:04And it also looks like
10:05we'll be keeping control
10:07of the House of Representatives.
10:08And I want to thank Mike Johnson.
10:18I think he's doing a terrific job.
10:20And this is despite being
10:21the first convicted felon
10:23to hold the nation's highest office.
10:24As noted by the Associated Press,
10:27the 45th and 47th president
10:29met voters where they were at.
10:30Quote,
10:31Overall, about half of Trump voters
10:33said inflation was the biggest issue
10:35factoring into their election decisions.
10:37About as many said
10:38that of the situation
10:39at the U.S.-Mexico border,
10:41according to AP VoteCast.
10:4367% of voters said not good or poor.
10:47Awfully difficult to win
10:48when it's that 67%.
10:50And how did those 67% of voters
10:53vote in this election?
10:54We say, look at this, Marge.
10:56Yeah, yeah, you can't win.
10:58Were you shocked by the results
10:59of the 2024 U.S. presidential election?
11:02Let us know in the comments below.
11:04This is a great job.
11:05There's no job like this.
11:06This is the most important job in the world.
