A detectorist has made the ''discovery of a lifetime" after unearthing a nugget of gold - shaped like Britain.

Jonathan Needham, 54, found the gold on the Staffordshire and Derbyshire border - and believes it was formed naturally beneath the ground there.

The nugget - shaped like England, Wales and Scotland - is almost 3cm in length and over 1cm wide and weighs 10.3 grams.

Retired tree surgeon and treasure seeker Jonathan says his ''Holy Grail'' find on November 1 is his ''most interesting ever''.

00:00My name is Jonathan Needham and I'm from Derby.
00:02I have a gold nugget in the shape of England.
00:06I found it last Friday and I found it on the Derbyshire-Staffordshire borders.
00:11It had been a quiet day, I've not really found much,
00:14and then I got a load of iron signals and I got a sharp signal within that iron
00:19and dug it over and there it was, it just popped out and it was lying on top of the soil
00:24and I knew straight away it was gold.
00:25There's only one thing that comes out of the ground looking as gold as this and that's gold.
00:30But yeah, I was still shocked because until it's proven wrong,
00:35it could well be a natural gold nugget which is very rare in England.
00:39Quite a few people have seen it and everybody's said the same thing.
00:43I never saw it to be, I'll be perfectly honest, I never saw it until other people have said it,
00:48but everyone who's seen it just said it's a map of England in gold.
00:52I'm hoping to put it up for auction but I'd like to think it'll be kept as a nugget.
00:56It's a little bit interesting, I think it's very interesting now I've had it pointed out to me.
01:02English gold's very rare so if it is English gold in the shape of England
01:06then yeah I think it'll probably have a value at auction.
