00:00When it launched, it was hailed by fans and critics alike as a turning point.
00:30And now, you can experience this classic in a whole new way.
00:34I'm David Hader, the voice of Naked Snake from Snake Eater.
00:39Take a look back with me and some old friends as we reflect on one of the greatest video games ever made.
00:44But first, let's solve a mystery that has intrigued fans for decades.
00:49Who was the actual voice of Eva?
00:53Suzetta Manet finally revealed.
01:00Jodie Benson.
01:04And the boss herself.
01:07Lori Allen.
01:12Now, let's talk shop.
01:23So I'm here with two of my favorite people.
01:37We're here in the Rossvett factory, which is pretty incredible to come back here after all this time.
01:43So we have known each other for so long.
01:46And yet I think this is the first time that all three of us have been in the same room together ever.
01:51So let's clear up something that I think the fans have been wondering about for quite some time.
01:55Why did you not use your real name?
01:57Okay, so when we recorded, you and I were in the studio together back in 2003.
02:02Just the various projects that I am affiliated with in my career are sort of family-based, children-based, things like that.
02:10So it was actually Chris Zimmerman Salter.
02:13Yeah.
02:14That was our director.
02:15That she kind of sat down with me and she's like, maybe we need to change your name.
02:19So she asked me, what was your dog's name growing up?
02:22And I said, Suzette Monet.
02:24So she's like, you know what?
02:25Let's build on that.
02:26How about Suzetta?
02:27How about instead of Monet, the artist, we'll do Minet?
02:30And I was like, sounds like a deal.
02:32But then seven years ago at various conventions where we meet and greet with wonderful fans,
02:38somebody slipped one of these wonderful games to my table.
02:42And I said, why are you bringing me that?
02:45And he says, because you're in it.
02:46Because you're in it.
02:47And I said, do you know my deep, dark secret?
02:51And he said, yes, I do know.
02:53I said, shh, keep it quiet.
02:55And now here we are in 2024.
02:58So we're doing a big reveal for our anniversary show.
03:01Well, it's so cool because both of you, the work in this is astounding.
03:06It's one of the most, and I'm not saying this because I'm in it, but it's one of the most legendary games of all time.
03:11And so, Lori, you'd never seen what we did until recently, right?
03:17Until recently.
03:18I don't even have the words for the depth of our relationship.
03:22It's beautiful.
03:23And I love when Ava just doesn't know how to describe it either.
03:26And so to watch the complexity of their relationship is just something that you can't explain.
03:31I mean, and that's what's so beautiful about the game is it's three-dimensional.
03:34They have a backstory.
03:35They have relationships.
03:36So to watch that, it really just brought me to tears.
03:40It's rare that I'm speechless, so it's pretty intense.
03:42Yeah.
03:43That is rare.
03:45How has it been reacquainting yourself with Ava?
03:48Oh, my gosh.
03:49What drives her is her passion for justice and her passion to do the right thing no matter who's talking to her.
03:58And the fact that she loves you in such a fearless way with immense loyalty.
04:06One of my favorite memories was we had to do a love scene, you and I, which I'd never done in voiceover before.
04:15Neither had I.
04:16I've been unlucky enough to do it on camera, and that's always weird.
04:19But in voiceover, you don't really need to do it in real life, but you have to make it sound like a thing.
04:24So shall we show them how we did the kissing scene?
04:27Yes.
04:28It might be too hot for TV, but let's do it.
04:29All right.
04:30Let's do it.
04:31Mmm.
04:32Mmm.
04:33Mmm.
04:34Mmm.
04:35Mmm.
04:36That's pretty much how we did it.
04:37Your hand has never been so loved.
04:38I will.
04:39It was so funny because we were just kissing our hands.
04:41Yeah.
04:42The other great thing about these games is every single one of them that we did, we were all in the booth together.
04:46We all just had chairs set up, and we did them all like radio plays, and it just gave it so much more life and reality.
04:54A lot of mine were by myself, and when you have the amazing casting director or voice director in your ear, she's saying,
05:00you love him, you love him, but you've defected, and you're just like, it's so draining but in the best way.
05:07Right.
05:08You know, and that's the thing about voiceover that we love so much is our scene partner is not there a lot.
05:12A lot.
05:13And so you have to just put yourself in this world.
05:15You have to create this world.
05:17I think when I do animation, a lot of times I'm by myself.
05:20Yes.
05:21That was a huge difference for me.
05:23Also with animation, you're running a line 20 to 30 times, one line at a time.
05:28You know, just open up the mic, focus on one line.
05:31This one, Chris was very specific about reading through the body of work to create the story, to be able to tell the story,
05:39not just repeating a line.
05:41Yeah.
05:42You know, give me low, give me high, give me breathy, give me, you know, that.
05:45It's storytelling.
05:46This was like, it's story time.
05:48I mean, this is where we have to make it very believable so the gamer can follow along.
05:53And it makes sense.
05:54When actors would come in that didn't know what it was, I'm trying to indicate the tone of it with my weird snake voice,
06:03which, you know, is supposed to be real.
06:05He's not weird.
06:06He loves snakes.
06:07Well, thank you.
06:08But it's, you know, it's supposed to be real and it's supposed to be grounded.
06:10But at the same time, it's supposed to reflect that we're in a bit of a strange situation.
06:14We're in a strange world, yeah.
06:16And so, you know, it's always fun to see the actors come in and get drawn into that.
06:21Because one other thing that I don't know if people realize, we didn't get the scripts in advance.
06:25Right.
06:26So you just get it.
06:27And when you hear us do it on the thing, that's the first or second time we're ever saying that line.
06:32Right.
06:33When we audition for things, we never know if we're hitting upon a metal gear solid.
06:38So our job is to stay in good vocal shape so that if we get the job, it's like icing on the cake.
06:43And so I feel so ridiculously grateful.
06:46So people recognize my face sometimes.
06:48But most times they don't, which is nice.
06:51It's a nice level of fame.
06:53But when I go to airport security and I give them my ID and then they see it, I know the look.
07:00They're like, look.
07:01And then they'll look up at me and then they'll look back.
07:03Putting it together.
07:04And then they look back and they go, are you?
07:06And I go, that's right.
07:10I was getting something at Whole Foods.
07:11This was several years ago.
07:12And I was like, I'll take just a brown bag for that.
07:15And he was like, are you the boss?
07:17And I was like, yeah.
07:18And I mean, it's such a sight to see.
07:20It's absolutely stunning.
07:22So our son McKinley, he somehow found out.
07:27I have the game in a box, like in our basement.
07:30In a box?
07:31In the basement.
07:32I'm sorry, Snake.
07:33In a box.
07:34That's right.
07:35And so he kind of did a little deep dive.
07:37And he came to me one day and he was like, Mom, what is this?
07:41And I'm like, so this is just a lie, right?
07:43This is just, this is not real.
07:45Right.
07:46And I'm like, yeah, it's real.
07:48And all of a sudden, I got cool mom points.
07:50Yeah, totally.
07:51I got a lot of cool auntie points.
07:53Yeah, that's right.
07:54Cool mom points.
07:55Right, right, right.
07:56So I'm so excited to introduce to you some new scenes from Metal Gear Solid Delta.
08:03So this opening is, it's supposedly the world's first Halo jump.
08:09High altitude, low opening.
08:10Look at this shot.
08:11Oh my gosh.
08:13So gorgeous.
08:14Look at that good military cough.
08:16Nice.
08:17Right?
08:18Nice job.
08:19Oh.
08:20Oh.
08:21Oh.
08:22It's just the shadowing of the, I mean, everything just looks extraordinary.
08:26Oh.
08:27Out.
08:28But he, I think I got him with the tranquilizer dart, so.
08:31Yeah.
08:32I think so.
08:33It'll be all right.
08:34I think he's okay.
08:35He's an honor.
08:36Oh.
08:37The spray.
08:38Just spray and blood.
08:39Stay in the light, the snake.
08:40Amazing.
08:41Oh, that's beautiful.
08:42You're so hot.
08:43Oh my God.
08:44It's true.
08:45They've made him considerably hotter.
08:46In real life too.
08:48Look at you.
08:49Commencing virtuous mission now.
08:51You can see the bleach pool from your skin.
08:53Yes.
08:54Nice.
08:55Woo.
08:56Woo.
08:57Come on, Delta.
08:59Well done.
09:00That is something.
09:01That's amazing.
09:02That's incredible.
09:03People are going to flip out.
09:04Yeah.
09:05I'm flipping out.
09:06Gorgeous.
09:07Me too.
09:08Why don't we take a look at some of your character?
09:10Okay.
09:11Oh my.
09:12Okay.
09:13There she is.
09:14Yes.
09:15You're so beautiful.
09:16Oh my gosh.
09:17I love her hair.
09:18Yeah.
09:19It's very 70s, very groovy.
09:20The colors are gorgeous.
09:21She loves him so much.
09:22I know.
09:23Aw.
09:24Hug her back.
09:25Hug her.
09:26He's not a great hugger.
09:27Come on.
09:28Hug her.
09:29See, you need some intimacy issues.
09:30You need therapy.
09:31She knows there's a special relationship.
09:32Yeah.
09:33I know.
09:34I know.
09:35I know.
09:36I know.
09:37There's a special relationship between the two.
09:38Yeah.
09:39I think Snake is an awkward hugger.
09:40Oh my gosh.
09:41Look at her.
09:42She's at the lake.
09:43There.
09:44Ready to go?
09:45And she turns it on.
09:46Okay.
09:47Let's go.
09:48Get on my bike, baby.
09:49Let's go.
09:50Awesome.
09:51That arm still hurts.
09:52Stunning.
09:53So good.
09:54Yeah.
09:55Does your arm still hurt?
09:56Yeah, because you broke it.
09:57I know.
09:58Sorry about that.
09:59Yes.
10:00Look it.
10:01Warrior.
10:02I also love how he continues to try to fight back.
10:05I know.
10:07I raised you.
10:08I taught you everything.
10:09You know.
10:10Let's talk about your suit.
10:11I look hot.
10:12You look great.
10:13I'm not even wearing any Spanx there.
10:15Amazing.
10:16Not wearing Spanx.
10:17I just...
10:18Wow.
10:19Oh.
10:20That's great.
10:21No need to prove that you're virtuous.
10:23This is in America.
10:24Of course, she's trying to protect...
10:26Look at the bullets.
10:27Look at that.
10:28Oh my God.
10:29That's my helicopter.
10:31Sorry.
10:32Total destruction.
10:33Sorry I'm lighting everything you need on fire.
10:36Including your heart.
10:37That's true.
10:41I gave you weapons.
10:42I gave you weapons.
10:43I gave you techniques.
10:44Clearly, you can continue the mission.
10:46Okay.
10:47So, what are your thoughts?
10:48That was incredible.
10:49It's just...
10:50It's epic.
10:51It's absolutely stunning.
10:52Stunning.
10:53And beautiful to see it.
10:54It's so gorgeous.
10:55Cinematic.
10:56The light of it.
10:57The camera angles.
10:58Everything.
10:59The character upgrades.
11:00I mean, I hate to say it, but we all look pretty awesome.
11:03We look great.
11:04We look great.
11:05Great.
11:06I think old fans, we're so excited for them to see it.
11:09They're going to just lose their mind.
11:11And then for new fans, a whole new generation of people,
11:15they're going to be beyond excited.
11:17I mean, it's something for everybody.
11:19But David, the story is the same.
11:21Yeah.
11:22The legacy of it is the same.
11:23Yeah.
11:24And so that's what's really important for the player.
11:26Yeah.
11:27And while it's important to me as a fan and as a snake,
11:31yeah, it really is so true to the original game.
11:35And, you know, of course, for the most part,
11:38they're using our original voice performances.
11:40I mean, for the lion's share of it,
11:43it's exactly the experience you had.
11:45Just it looks so much better.
11:47But what was it like, you know,
11:49stepping in and doing, you know, some of the new lines
11:52and stepping into those characters again?
11:54How did you feel?
11:55Oh, it was a blast.
11:56It was a blast.
11:57It was so easy because they've been marinating
12:00in, like, their love affairs, their fights,
12:02their relationships.
12:03So it takes no time to literally drop into those characters,
12:08those relationships.
12:09And 20 years have passed, you know,
12:11so then you have legacy.
12:12You have history with these characters that you get
12:15to just dive back into them.
12:17But layer on top of it.
12:19And, you know, but again, the story is there.
12:22So what do you want to say to the fans
12:26as Delta gets ready to emerge into the world?
12:29For our fans, thank you doesn't even cut it.
12:32I mean, it makes me emotional every time.
12:35We are beyond grateful to have come on this journey with us.
12:40Thank you for believing in us and the story.
12:42And also, like, having a community.
12:45Like, we now have this community of people,
12:47of artists, cosplay.
12:48I mean, there's such a huge legacy for everyone
12:53in this world, clearly not just us.
12:55And so I'm just so grateful.
12:57I'm really grateful.
12:58I'm excited for the old fans and the new fans
13:03to enjoy Delta, to be able to see
13:06that they can do anything.
13:08You know, they are courageous.
13:10They can be brave.
13:11They can be bigger than life.
13:13They can do hard things.
13:15And, yeah, so thank you.
13:18Thank you to all.
13:19Thank you to all of the amazing fans
13:21and the new fans that are going to join in with Delta.
13:24Yeah, I hope as well that people can step
13:26into this world, old and new fans alike,
13:29and feel like they can take on anything,
13:32that they can take down their own personal Metal Gear,
13:35no matter what that means to them in their lives.
13:37So go forth, and always remember,
13:41you're pretty good.
13:46Thanks for taking a look back with us
13:48at one of the most influential
13:49and important titles in all of gaming,
13:51Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater.
13:53And now, Metal Gear Solid Delta.
13:56For some of you, this was a nostalgic look back
13:59at one of your favorite games.
