John Mousinho's discusses Pompey 1-1 draw against Hull at MKM Stadium
Transcript
00:00So John, how do you sum up that performance today, please?
00:04I thought we were okay in the first half. I know there's a real contrast in terms of what we produced in the second half,
00:09but the key thing for us today coming away to a side like Hull on a big pitch,
00:13you want to play us to make sure that we don't do what we've done against the likes of Cardiff and Stoke and stayed in the game.
00:19So we were probably slightly passive and needed to press slightly higher.
00:24We nipped the ball high up a couple of times in the first half, but not nearly as many as we did in the second half.
00:29We were really disappointed with the goal, but I thought after that Nico made a brilliant save,
00:34but after that there wasn't much for Nico to do and that was the big message at half-time.
00:38Don't panic, we're in the game, we'll get a goal.
00:41The lads got the goal a lot quicker than I think anybody imagined,
00:44and then I just thought it was one-way traffic after that.
00:46I thought it was a brilliant performance, so I think our best 45 by a long way there, so far this season.
00:50Did the press work better in the second half, do you feel?
00:53We were a bit more aggressive, yeah. We got picked off a couple of times and that's absolutely fine,
00:57but we had to be a bit more aggressive, a bit more front-footed.
00:59The most pleasing thing was that even after scoring the goal, we still stayed on the front foot, we didn't drop off.
01:04I thought what it took was a bit more bravery and athleticism and I thought we showed it.
01:09I thought we showed it really, really well in the second half.
01:11We nipped the ball back so many times and I think the only disappointment was we didn't score more goals off the back of it.
01:15And the fact that their fans booed them off at the end, has it reflected your performance?
01:19I think it reflects the performance.
01:20I know there's a big expectation when the bottom of the league comes to a sideline, a massive expectation.
01:28Especially when you go a goal up early, I think there's probably a lot of people in the stadium who thought that would be it.
01:32We didn't think that, we didn't believe it.
01:34I think we put in a really, really good performance to show that when we do things right, we're definitely at the level.
01:40Did the equaliser in 19 seconds in the second half, did that influence your performance in the second half?
01:45Because it was so much better.
01:46I think it probably did, yeah. It got us going, it got us on the front foot.
01:50I was actually worried at the time it was going to negatively impact it because we were talking about being a lot more front footed and a lot more aggressive.
01:56I didn't know if getting the equaliser would impact on that and it didn't.
01:59The lads kept going and created chances and opportunities and I'm really looking forward to winning again.
02:04But it showed it wasn't just a fluke because you guys were completely on the front foot after the first half.
02:10We know we're capable of putting in these performances.
02:13The key for us is to take advantage of small moments and pick up a few more points.
02:18But we're fully aware of that. We have to make sure we stay on top of it and we stay consistent with it.
02:23So it's about making sure that after having done that today, we go away to Plymouth and put in a performance that is the complete opposite to what we did on the other two midweek games.
02:33We come away from games like the Burnley game, the Sheffield night game, really positive, really buoyed.
02:37We just have to flick into a different mindset now to make sure we stay on the front foot and carry our momentum into the game on Tuesday.
02:43You made the decision to put Matt Ritchie in for his second start of the season. What was the thinking there?
02:47Matt's been brilliant at the man he plays. We spoke about it time and time again.
02:51The leadership he brings to the side in terms of the way we want to press, the way we want to organise.
02:56He gives us that. He gives us calmness on the ball, quality on the ball.
02:59I thought he was brilliant today. We weren't going to take him off actually, but he clamped up so we decided to get fresh legs on him.
03:04Matt's really, really deserved that and hopefully that's the start of his second Portsmouth career and really kick-starts him to having a good season.
03:12You said you thought he was brilliant today. What did you like about that performance?
03:14I just thought he pressed really well. He was energetic. When the ball broke to him, he did really well.
03:19I think for the penalty on Cassini, that was Matt that nicked the ball high up and then we won it back.
03:26Just everything about this game, I feel very, very assured when... Yes, it's just a standard penalty. I can't understand why it's not been given.
03:33There were two big penalty calls actually, weren't there?
03:35There were two penalties. We've seen them back. We've had the privilege of seeing them back.
03:39The first one on Callum Lange, the defender just takes his legs out from underneath him. It's no penalty.
03:43I thought it was just... 99.9% of the time, the one on the Cassini, Yengi, is given and I think 100% of the time outside the box.
03:52I'll go and speak to the referee now and try and get his thinking behind that.
03:55The other big decision was what I thought was a red card as well for Charlie Hughes.
04:00For that penalty?
04:01No, for the one where he drags Matt Ritchie down when we're through on goal in the second half.
04:08What did you think of Yengi's performance overall today? He looked a bit sluggish at times.
04:13I think it's just the sharpness of getting back into the level. I thought probably in the first half that maybe that was a consequence of us not...
