00:00Campaigners surrounding Rimrose Valley Country Park are hailing the decision to cancel a dual carriageway as a victory for community action.
00:08The announcement was contained in the Chancellor's Autumn Budget which said the A5036 Princess Way scheme would not progress as it was unfunded and unaffordable.
00:18Campaigners have fought to save the park from National Highway's Port of Liverpool Access Road since it was announced in 2017.
00:24It's long called for better solutions to port access to be developed instead, including increasing rail freight capacity and innovative freight logistics technology.
00:34Public support for the campaign saw thousands of members of the public attending protests and demonstrations in opposition to the plans.
00:40There was also support from Bootle's Peter Dowd and Sefton Central's Bill Esterson as well as Metro Mayor Steve Rotherham who backed their calls for better alternatives to be put forward.
00:49National Highways wanted to build the new road to bypass congestion in Litherland.
00:53The scheme was included in the previous government's road investment strategy but was postponed in 2023.
