00:00I might be a very violent man and my goal is to blast a building off.
00:20To learn how to do it, I have to live through stern discipline.
00:30I'll have to build my body.
00:34I'll have to learn several skills.
00:39I may have to have the discipline to learn a new language if the building is in a foreign
00:44country.
00:48I'll need to learn the skill of dodging officials and police.
00:52I'll need training in firearms and all of that will require discipline and all that
00:57discipline may ultimately train me to be successful, to achieve my goal.
01:05But what is the goal?
01:07The goal is violence.
01:10When you will look at me just before I'm going to set out for my mission, you will say, wow,
01:21what dedication this man has shown, what great discipline he has submitted himself to.
01:32My body will look good, like the body of a yogi.
01:41My mind will be focused on its goal, there would be no other thoughts.
01:46So there would be a certain calmness on my face.
01:50I would be assured, self-assured that I'm going to achieve my target, the building is
01:55going to disappear tomorrow, hence I would be gently smiling.
02:01And if you look at me, you might say, wow, what a spiritually advanced soul, look at
02:08his body, no trace of fat, look at the face radiating with bliss, look at the composure,
02:18what great certainty coming from God himself.
02:23But what is the goal?
02:25The goal is violence.
02:32Discipline and struggle are no virtues by themselves.
02:39No discipline has any virtue if that discipline is serving a self-created goal.
02:49The most marauding armies were sometimes also the most disciplined armies.
02:59The most greedy of men are also sometimes the most disciplined of men because greed
03:05requires that kind of discipline.
03:12You might have dedicated yourself to any discipline.
03:17You may have modeled your body and mind according to the rigors of that discipline.
03:23But mind you, it is you who are doing it with all that you stand for.
03:31This discipline will never take you beyond yourself.
03:37Then there is another discipline, which is the right kind of discipline.
03:45You know the word discipline is very closely related to discipleship, discipline, discipleship
03:54and discipleship means to follow, to be a student.
04:03Whom does one follow?
04:07To whom does one let himself be a disciple?
04:11To that which is bigger than oneself, right?
04:15You just don't follow anybody or do you?
04:17If you follow someone smaller than yourself, then you are essentially following but yourself.
04:23Hence real discipline is about submitting yourself to that which is far, far bigger
04:29than you, that which really qualifies to be your guru, your teacher.
04:35That which you call by no names and also by an infinite variety of names.
04:42Real discipleship is surrender and in that you do not follow any particular pattern of living.
04:54You must have heard the name of Kabir and he beautifully said,
05:04माला फेरू, न जप करू, मुझ से कहू न राम, सुमिरन मेरा हरी करें, मैं पाहू विस्राम।
05:16He says, I have left behind all kinds of spiritual activities and disciplines.
05:23Neither do I recite the holy name, nor do I entertain myself with the beads.
05:37I have left all of that behind.
05:39I don't even try to have the discipline of remembering God or truth.
05:46Now God remembers me.
05:49I do not remember God.
05:52This is real discipleship.
05:54I have let go of everything that came from my sense of accomplishment and fear.
06:04Now I let myself be guided by existence itself.
06:13Now I am a real disciple.
06:20Now I listen as one listens to the teacher.
06:25Now I see as one looks at the teacher with reverence, with love, with submission, with
06:37trust and in looking I learn and in listening I learn and that learning is continuous.
06:52Every sound tells me something.
06:55Every experience teaches me something beyond the experience.
07:03That is real discipleship.
07:06That is discipline and that discipline is not a part of life.
07:11That discipline is life itself.
07:12Then you do not say I am disciplined.
07:17Then you just say I live and that living itself is discipleship.
07:22If you are disciplined, then you are imposing a discipline upon yourself and that is cruelty.
07:29Every child knows that to be put under discipline is something not likable.
07:38Did you like discipline when you were subjected to it as a kid?
07:44It is that kid that you have to return to, the kid who does not like external discipline.
07:49When you do not remain subjugated under external discipline, then something from the heart
08:00rises and that is a great discipline.
08:02To the world it may look like randomness and anarchy.
08:08To the world it may look like chaos, but even if it is a chaos, it is a holy chaos.
08:16Even if it is random, that randomness has a great divinity in it.
08:20It has an order that is beyond the comprehension of the human mind.
08:27It is not disorderly.
08:28Human eyes will call it disorderly.
08:30It is not disorderly.
08:33It is a great order that you do not need to even comprehend.
08:38You can just let it be.
08:40You can just let it play itself out.
08:45It is such a great order.
08:47But we like to know what is happening to us, right?
08:50We live in consciousness, we like to live in control, we want to be masters of our fate.
08:56So we want to know in advance, please tell me what is happening to me.
09:01Those who want to be assured of what is happening to them will only get that which they can
09:10know of and that is so very little, so major, so insufficient to quench your thirst.
09:21Those who are prepared to trust and let go, those who are prepared to not to count what
09:29they are getting, get that which cannot be counted.
09:35If you keep counting what you are getting, you will only get that which is within counting.
09:46If you keep counting the numbers, all you will get is that which is numerical.
09:52I'm asking you, is love numerical?
09:55Is joy quantifiable?
09:59But we like to count.
10:00We like to be assured.
10:03Delight in discipleship lies in not knowing the target and also not knowing whether you
10:10are reaching the target.
10:14You delight then lies not in accomplishment, but in discipleship itself.
10:22I love you so much that it is a pleasure beyond pleasures just to follow you.
10:29I love you so much that I don't care where your advice is taking me.
10:34I love you so much that even if your advice is bringing me to my ruin, what a lovely ruin
10:44it is.
10:45Can I be ruined twice?
10:46Can you give me another death please?
10:55This is real discipleship.
10:59This is not the discipline of waking up at 5 am and rushing off with your yoga mat, please.
11:06And kindly do not call that as discipline.
11:08That is the discipline of the tank and the submarine.
11:11There too you have to stick to strict timelines like in a Japanese factory.
