00:00Unlike other provinces, the capital city of Thailand, Bangkok, can choose its own leader.
00:05And here's why.
00:07Thailand's governing system was centralized until the Siamese Revolution in 1932,
00:12which promoted the idea of power decentralization.
00:16In 1975, the government enacted the Bangkok Administration Act,
00:21allowing Bangkok to elect its own governor.
00:24This decision was made because the government believed
00:27that a quick and simple system was needed as the capital city became a business hub.
00:33One theory suggests that the past governments did not support such governor elections
00:38in other provinces due to fears of separatist movements
00:41or monopolized local influences resulting from decentralization.
00:46However, some political factions are now strongly pushing for the governor
00:50elections in other provinces.
00:52I will need to wait and see if this change will occur.
