00:00And where I see it, Sofia done us a favor.
00:14Sofia's gonna come for us.
00:15I want what's mine.
00:16It's you and me now, kid.
00:17Now let's get back what belongs to us.
00:25One family down, one to go.
00:26Any time we got ourselves some goddamn respect.
00:43Right, so episode five of The Penguin.
00:46Any initial thoughts you give me?
00:49I thought it was good, but I was starting to get the feeling that this is just like
00:54sort of like build up.
00:56Okay, I have more set dressing on to the next Batman movie.
01:01But then like the way the episode ended, I was like, okay, we're back.
01:04We're back.
01:05We're solid.
01:06We're so back.
01:07A lot happens.
01:08And I think that seems to be a good thing with the show, a lot happens in pretty much
01:11every episode.
01:12They've killed off Maroney's wife, his son.
01:16They killed off, I can't remember what his name is.
01:18The whole Falcon family.
01:19The whole Falcon family's dead.
01:21And then they killed off another one.
01:24I can't remember who it was, but it was the bald guy.
01:26He's in all the same shoes and he plays the same character and everything.
01:29But a lot happens.
01:31And then at the end it feels like they're kind of like building the foundations of The
01:38Penguin's empire.
01:39Like he lives in the sewers now.
01:40That was very Batman animated series.
01:43It's typical in keeping with Gotham, sort of industrial underground lair.
01:48But isn't Penguin's actual lore, he's just a club owner, isn't it?
01:54Like a deformed Penguin man, like in the Keaton films.
01:59Well I think in this version, aye, he's just a deformed club owner.
02:03But I think that is where it's going to lean a wee bit more into the comic book aspect.
02:08But I find it's like, it feels like it's just them just setting up, you know, in the next
02:14few episodes he's going to be balding on that.
02:16And then this is where it's going to lead into Batman where he is going to be the established
02:21gang.
02:22And all of his men are going through all these tunnels, maybe they'll be called The Penguins
02:26or something.
02:27Silly name.
02:28The Penguins.
02:29But I thought the episode mostly focused on Sophia Gigante, as she's known as Gigante.
02:35When I say that I always think of the Resident Evil 4 giant.
02:39But aye, so it focused on her and established her.
02:44But they've done a lot of work with her now, and I've said before, but I don't see them
02:48killing her off.
02:49They can't kill her off with this much.
02:50Unless it's like just for the show.
02:52But even then, like you were saying, they do so much in every episode it's kind of like,
02:57they kind of need to take a second to pause.
02:58They did that last episode, give you her whole backstory.
03:02They can't just kill her off.
03:03No, I don't think so.
03:05At the end she makes a date with Maroni.
03:09Is it Maroni?
03:10The Maronis?
03:11Aye, the Maronis.
03:12The Morons.
03:13The Morons.
03:14The guy who voices Mr. Krabs.
03:16That is him.
03:20So I think the Maronis will die, and the Gigantes, the new gang, because obviously all the Falcons
03:25are dead.
03:26I don't think they can get rid of it.
03:29But as you said, a lot happens in the episode, but they've just done so much work with this
03:33character.
03:34But overall, I thought it was a good episode.
03:38I think they really, I mean it's kind of been established before, but they've really made
03:42Vic into the gangster now.
03:44Oh aye, definitely.
03:45He's more of a violent.
03:46Aye, that's what I was going to say.
03:48He's getting into street fights now, and he's actually fighting for the Penguin, and that's
03:52just driving him around in his ugly purple car.
03:54To be fair, after that though, he is kind of relegated to looking after a Penguin's
03:58man, kind of sneaking about.
04:00There is hints there that there's going to be more conflict there, in the what, Old Gotham?
04:04I don't know what they called it in the show.
04:06It's kind of like flood decimated.
04:08King Court?
04:09King Court.
04:10Something like that, aye.
04:11You know, this decimated area, and it seems like there's a lot of criminal activity there.
04:17Interesting to see how that folds out.
04:18Which is odd, because of what happens in the Batman film, you know, the flooding.
04:22Um, what was I going to say?
04:26Aye, the mother's relationship with the Penguin, again, it feels like Sopranos.
04:32I don't know though, because she actually does seem to care about Tony, or, Tony.
04:38Do you know what I mean?
04:39About Oz.
04:40I feel like in The Sopranos, she's, Tony's mother is awful.
04:44She's an awful person.
04:46She's one of the worst characters, in a good way, but that's just awful to watch.
04:50I feel like she actually, like, has love for Oz, but she's so, like, she's obviously
04:55has Alzheimer's or something, like, kind of like laid herself on there.
04:58Aye, because they think they could get her medication.
05:01Something I wanted to ask you, and I don't know if I'm confused a bit with the show,
05:04is, is Oz and his family, are they attacking?
05:08They have to be, because they're from, it's Gotham, New Jersey.
05:11They all have like that kind of New Jersey.
05:13Aye, my mother.
05:14Aye.
05:15I don't know what it sounds like.
05:16Oswald isn't a very...
05:17Cobblepot?
05:18It's not a very Italian name, is it?
05:20No, not really, but, I mean, certain liberties are obviously taken there.
05:25So, would you say he's Italian, then?
05:27I'd say he probably is, aye.
05:29He can't look that much like Tony Soprano, and that'd be a bit Italian.
05:33Um, what else do I have?
05:35Um, it seems like, in this show, every episode, things get really, really awful, but then
05:41at the end, towards the end, he kind of picks himself up again.
05:44And it's kind of been following this trend that I am, that we've retired of it.
05:47Aye, it was the same in episode three, where he's kind of at the peak, where the drugs
05:55aren't then, bang, conflict.
05:57Back to level one.
05:58It's sort of just this wave of, bad thing happened, good thing happened.
06:01Yeah.
06:02It's getting, it's getting old.
06:04Yeah, it's getting a wee bit tiresome.
06:05I'm glad they changed it up with episode four, that was like a refresh.
06:09It's probably the best episode in the series, probably will just be the best episode in
06:12the series.
06:13Well, I don't know.
06:14I reckon it will come out to like, all the war between the Penguins gang and the Gigantes
06:21and the Morons.
06:23It's going to be interesting to see, like, how does he even get grunts?
06:26Like, that might be like where Fleck's storyline's heading, where he kind of recruits these,
06:30you know, other street gangs that are looting.
06:33But that's going to be interesting, because obviously, the Gigantes have this whole sort
06:38of set up, mob structure.
06:39Pre-Istallic empire.
06:40Yeah.
06:41But, again, I don't know what I'm saying.
06:48I was going to say on the Penguin himself, as a character, it's just like a completely
06:53different depiction of him, because the Penguin in the comics and the series, he's like such
06:59like a coward, and he basically just represents greed.
07:03But in the show, the level of violence he just continues to exhibit is completely different.
07:08Aye, when it burns the...
07:10Aye, that's what I was saying.
07:11Like, this escalation of violence, you don't see that in any of the other anime shows.
07:14Like, he would get someone else to do it.
07:16But the way he's doing it himself, it's just, it's completely unique to the series.
07:22I mean, it's a good spin on the character, and it's also just a good, it's just good
07:27with this whole new universe of the Batman scene, they've taken the violence more seriously.
07:32And they've brought that in a way that they're becoming, like, kind of born.
07:35And like the Christian Bale Batman movies, where it's all like, they're all like wearing
07:39military gear.
07:41So that's still a different approach, I would say.
07:44Like, obviously Christian Bale's and Christopher Nolan's Batman films, they did the Joker really well.
07:49I actually think they did.
07:50I do like Big N's, but then Bane was just a strange mistake.
07:54Bane's over the top, kind of, not over the top in the right way, like over the top, like
07:58multi-tech sort of experiment kind of thing.
08:01It just doesn't work.
08:03Here's a quick question for you.
08:04Like, if they were to bring Bane into this universe, how do you think they would do?
08:11I don't really know.
08:12Do you think they'd go with the Mexican Luchador kind of thing?
08:15I would think it would be interesting, definitely, but it would have to be its own thing, I guess.
08:22You could make it kind of serious, though.
08:23You could do like the Breaking Bad cartel kind of thing.
08:26I think Bane, the cartel boss, where he also has facial skin, but he wears this mask.
08:32I wonder if they'd make a different reason for it, and maybe it's just a hint.
08:36Like Kingpin.
08:38Yeah.
08:39One I always think, because people are always theorising for the next Batman film is,
08:43is it going to be Mr. Freeze for the film?
08:45But I'm always thinking, how the hell are you going to do Mr. Freeze in that universe?
08:48It just makes no sense.
08:49He's the most fantastical of the villains.
08:53Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, these characters are just uneven.
08:57How do you put that in a universe?
09:00I suppose they've managed to make the Penguin from this kind of stout, not very imposing figure,
09:07to this guy who's, like you said, Tony Soprano, big, imposing character, even just on screen.
09:12He's a big presence.
09:14So they can do what they want with the characters, I think.
09:18But overall, I thought it was a good episode.
09:21I am getting a wee bit tired, though, of getting knocked over and picking yourself up.
09:25The formula.
09:27I think it needs to pick it up.
09:28He always ends up in an overall better position, though.
09:31So I think that's kind of one thing.
09:33When we're looking at it as a season, as a whole, I don't think this will matter as much,
09:37because you're not looking at it episode per episode.
09:40You're just kind of looking at the series in a straight timeline.
09:43Do you think it would have benefitted if it just came out all in one go?
09:47Probably.
09:49I don't think it would have benefitted of releasing things.
09:51I think Amazon did.
09:52It's just that it rings out.
09:54I think it kills the hype for the show, though.
09:57In a way.
09:59You get people talking about it every week.
10:02I suppose.
10:04Like us.
10:06I don't know.
10:07I just prefer binging the show.
10:09If you watch a movie, you're not just going to pause the movie and come back to it.
10:13I know you're in.
10:14Let's say you're watching The Irishman, you're not just going to be pausing it.
10:16You're just going to sit there for the whole thing.
10:19But you don't just go, I'll come back to it next week.
10:22I'll see where the story goes next week.
10:24That's what a serialisation is.
10:25It's kind of outdated a wee bit.
10:27But overall, good episode.
10:29Definitely.
10:30Sweet.
