00:00What's up everybody, Griffey here. It's the best time of the year, that's right,
00:04spoopy season. The time of year when we all gather around and watch the most horrifying
00:08movies we can find. Movies that make you cringe more than the Crow remake. Movies that are
00:13bloodier than Art the Clown in a Shower. So I thought it would be fun to make a list of
00:17my top five favorite horror movies of 2024 so far.
00:21You must be very careful, Margaret. Bad things will start to happen around her. Evil things.
00:27Number five, The First Omen. Let's start here. This is 100% the year of horrifying birth
00:34scenarios for women. This isn't even the only horrifying birth nun movie this year.
00:40Sydney Sweeney just knocked one out in between her Dr. Sasquatch soap videos.
00:44This is something that is in the air. You don't have to be afraid.
00:51God has great plans for you. As we watch this woman's body become a literal spiritual battle
00:57field, the terror is omnipresent, right? What this movie does is it finds this beautiful
01:02blend of kind of modern, terrifying horror imagery and ideas and blends it with that
01:07wonderful tonality and kind of pace of The Omen. It truly goes back and rewrites the
01:13entire DNA of the franchise, giving it a really fun, extra nightmarish flavor, right? It actually
01:18strengthens and deepens the mythology of both movies, right? We learn about the group who
01:24is behind the conception of Damien, and it is truly terrifying. Some fans will see that and
01:31say, that's not exactly what was in the first one. I think that's the problem with a lot of sequels,
01:36right? A lot of sequels don't have new ideas. You cannot accuse The First Omen of that.
01:41The choices they made and the additions to the story and mythology create a wonderful
01:46bedding for this horrifying franchise to grow and expand and become better. This is the kind
01:51of prequel slash sequel every single person should be trying to make. Whatever you might see
01:58or hear, I ask you all to remain calm. Number four, Late Night with the Devil. The idea of
02:06watching an unedited found studio master tape of one of the most horrifying events in late
02:11night history is absolutely a brilliant place to start a horror movie. So this movie takes place
02:18following a late night host who's trying to drum up some ratings to Pete Johnny Carson for sweeps,
02:23right? His answer to this is to bring on an actual possessed survivor of a cult. Murder, chaos, madness
02:30ensue, right? David Desmolchen is perfection as our late night host. All of the best stuff happens
02:37when we are sitting as the studio audience watching this man make a terrible deal with the devil
02:43in a desperate attempt to become the king of the ratings. This is a man who has achieved immense
02:49success with his show, has a huge number of adoring fans that mean nothing to him because he's not
02:56number one. This is a man whose entire self-worth can only be gained from other people giving him
03:03the ratings, right? Today we have ratings too, right? That's thumbs, likes, comments, engagement.
03:08What would you give up to be a Jake Paul? What would you give up to be making hock to a money
03:15on TikTok? How much would you personally be willing to give up to be on a middling show
03:21on an internet channel like Looper? The absolute emptiness, the hollowness of this man is the kind
03:29of thing that David Desmolchen really sinks his teeth into. We watch this man confront the truest
03:36consequence of what he did. It's some of the most powerful filmmaking I've seen this year.
03:42It's fascinating to watch. Do you have any idea the kind of risks a woman like me takes every
03:46time she agrees to have a little fun? I've never thought about it that way. Of course you haven't.
03:51You're not a woman. Number three, Strange Darling. Strange Darling feels like one of those movies
03:57that is about to be imitated a bunch. The problem is I don't know how many people can make this
04:03kind of a movie. This is a movie that plays fast and loose with time, tropes, perception to always
04:10keep you guessing. You never really know exactly where you stand in Strange Darling. Strange Darling
04:16is about one of the most prolific serial killers in American history, and this is the tale of their
04:23final killing spree, right? Kyle Galdner and Willa Fitzgerald are absolutely inspired castings in
04:30this film. A lot of us have been Kyle Galdner stands for a long time, right? Some of us since
04:35he was The Flash in Smallville, but the real center of mass of this movie is Willa Fitzgerald,
04:40and this is a year jam-packed with amazing female lead performances. But let me tell you,
04:45this feels like you are a snake staring in the eyes of a snake charmer. You feel like you are
04:51watching someone who is about to have a volcanic eruption level moment in their career. If she
04:58does not go on to do many many many unforgettable roles, I will be absolutely shocked. You told the
05:05police that you were chased by a woman. I don't want to talk to you. Number two, Cuckoo. This movie
05:13is batshit insane. Here's the spoilery version for you. Dan Stevens owns this place in the Bavarian
05:18Alps, right? Yeah, explain that. When you just see a grown man take out a flute and play that
05:30in a normal situation, you know that's wrong. Have you ever just watched someone's neck pulsate
05:35really fast and create a hypersonic time loop effect? You will once you've seen Cuckoo. It's
05:42absolutely bizarre at every turn, but in an earned, grounded way that is almost impossible
05:48to believe they were able to accomplish. Hunter Schafer's performance as the teenage daughter in
05:53this film gives a kind of black, angst-ridden heart that this movie absolutely needs to ground
06:00us to the gonzo film that we are about to watch, right? You're watching her try to grapple with
06:06these very relatable teenage experiences, right? When you use that as the center of what becomes
06:12one of the most baffling horror films in recent memory, it is an absolute lifeline to us the
06:18audience. And the weird thing is that she accomplishes this with a much more minimalist
06:23performance than you would think. This is not a screaming, raging-at-the-world teenager. There is
06:29something so real and kind of defeated about this character often that makes her journey
06:36unbelievable. Take care of yourself.
06:42Number one, The Substance. This should come as no surprise. You may have even remembered that we
06:49made an entire video imploring you to go watch The Substance. You can find that on Looper right now.
06:54Female body horror stories are everywhere this year. This is the one you feel in your joints,
07:00you feel in your muscles. The editing style, the pacing, the rapid cuts, the jerking us back and
07:06forth between realities. There is no safe place to hide once The Substance gets up to speed.
07:12Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley are a match made in heaven. Or hell. These two play the body horror
07:19from both sides of the spectrum. And it gives us this beautiful Citizen Kane cradle-to-the-grave
07:26take on the different ways that our body can be weaponized against us and that we can hurt and
07:31not respect our own bodies. Some of the greatest stuff in the movie is watching Demi Moore just
07:37look at herself in the mirror, wiping makeup off of her face. Trying, in fact, it looks like,
07:42to wipe her whole face away is as pure and clear and clean of a horror movie image as I've ever
07:49seen. Every single person who watches that movie can relate to what is terrifying in that moment.
07:56Seeing the body weaponized from before and after makes this stand out even among a year that has
08:03exceptional body horror stories. People always ask for something new. At 50,
08:12it stops. It's impossible for me to overstate where this movie's finale will rank amongst the
08:19greatest in horror movie history. It is absolute insanity that you will never be able to scrub
08:26from your mind once you watch it. I'm imploring you to go watch Looper's entire video about The
08:31Substance first because that's really important. Secondly, watch this movie even if the ending has
08:36been spoiled for you. Watch it anyways. I assure you there is no chance in hell that whoever tried
08:43to spoil this film for you can do justice to the images that will be forced into your mind.
08:49So that's it for my top five favorite horror movies of the year so far. There's no need to
08:54go arc the clown in the comments. I'm sure we all agree that my list is beautifully thought out and
08:58perfect, right? That said, there are still a ton of other horror movies I'm looking forward to this
09:03year from Heretic to Asriel to Smile 2. Who knows what will make the list by the end of the year,
09:09but this is it so far. What we can all agree on is this is a beautiful time to be a horror movie fan.
