00:00The horrific scale of the devastation was becoming all too clear.
00:07The Haitian president, René Privet, told reporters that he believed over 100,000 may have perished in the earthquake.
00:15Many of the dead were hastily buried in mass graves.
00:21The presidential palace and many other government buildings had been smashed,
00:28hampering the country's already unsteady central government.
00:36Haiti was a country that had ceased to function.
00:39This terrible disaster was turning into a horrific nightmare.
00:58We slept in the streets. We were living like animals.
01:09Thankfully, towards the end of the day after the initial earthquake,
01:13the first international aid agencies began to arrive.
01:17Commandos of US Air Force Special Operations managed to land at the airport in Port-au-Prince.
01:25Due to the damaged control tower, no aid flights had been able to bring relief to the survivors.
01:35Haitian authorities handed the airport over to the US officials,
01:39who were able to allow aid flights to land the following day.
01:44The US Army did very well, and so that helped a lot in the distribution of the aid that came,
01:51food, water, and everything else.
