Justice Sanjiv Khanna has been apointed the next Chief Justice of India by President of India Droupadi Murmu after Chief Justice DY Chandrachud named him his successor. The oath ceremony will be on November 11 - a day after Justice Chandrachud retires.

00:00Justice Sanjeev Khanna is said to be the 51st Chief Justice of India.
00:04He will serve as the next CJI for just six months before retiring on May 13, 2025.
00:11So who is Justice Khanna, the second most senior judge in India's top court?
00:16Let's understand.
00:17Born on 14th May 1960, Sanjeev Khanna studied in the University of Delhi.
00:22He was enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1983.
00:26He initially practiced at the Tish Hazari District Courts before moving to the High Court of Delhi.
00:32He served for a long time as a senior standing counsel for the Income Tax Department and then
00:38in 2004 he was appointed as a standing counsel for the National Capital Territory of Delhi.
00:45As an additional public prosecutor and as an amicus curiae, Justice Khanna
00:50appeared and argued in several criminal cases at the Delhi High Court.
00:54In 2005, he was elevated as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court and then in 2006,
01:00he was made a permanent judge.
01:02While serving in the Delhi High Court, he also served as chairman or judge-in-charge
01:07at Delhi Judicial Academy, Delhi International Arbitration Centre
01:11and the District Court Mediation Centres.
01:14On 18th January 2019, Justice Khanna was elevated as a Supreme Court Judge.
01:21From 17th June 2023 to 25th December 2023,
01:25he was the chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Service Committee.
01:29Justice Khanna is currently the Executive Chairman of National Legal Services Authority
01:35and he is a member of the Governing Council of the National Judicial Academy, Bhopal.
01:41Throughout his tenure in the Supreme Court,
01:44Justice Khanna has been a part of landmark cases like
01:48Abrogation of Article 370.
01:50He was part of the bench that upheld the constitutional validity of the abrogation
01:56of Article 370 in 2023.
01:59Then Electoral Bond Scheme.
02:02In 2024, he was part of the bench declaring the Electoral Bond Scheme unconstitutional.
02:08Then Mutual Consent Divorce.
02:10Justice Khanna's bench ruled that the Supreme Court has the authority to grant divorce
02:15on the grounds of irretrievable breakdown of marriage under Article 142 of the Indian Constitution.

02:24The landmark RTI judgment in 2019 was authored by Justice Khanna himself.
02:31This affirmed that the office of the Chief Justice is not exempt from RTI requests.
