With less than 10 weeks until Christmas, Dogs Trust Leeds is on a mission to find the dogs in its care the one Christmas gift they all want – a home for life.

The centre is currently home to 87 dogs and the charity is hoping to find homes for as many of them as possible ahead of the festive season. We met some of the pups up for adoption this year.

00:00Hi, I'm James Connolly, I'm a reporter at the Yorkshire Evening Post and I'm here at
00:05the Dogs Trust Rehoming Centre in Leeds to meet some of the residents.
00:10With less than 10 weeks to go until Christmas, Dogs Trust Leeds is on a mission to find the
00:14dogs in its care the one Christmas gift they all want, a home for life.
00:19Dogs Trust Leeds is currently home to 87 dogs and the charity wants to find homes for as
00:23many of them as possible ahead of the festive season.
00:27One of those dogs hoping for a new home this year is Rory.
00:31Okay well this is Rory, he's a four year old lurcher, he's been with us now for a few months,
00:37he arrived when he'd been found as a stray so we don't really know anything about his
00:40history but what we do know is that he's a lovely dog, he's full of fun, he loves training,
00:46he loves his food, he's really friendly and we know that he's going to do really well
00:52with adopters who like to have fun days out with their dogs.
00:56He can be a little bit reactive but he's been working on that as well so the training
01:00team have been introducing him to some dogs, he's started to do really well with that but
01:05in a nice sort of predictable home we know that he'll do really well.
01:08Hiya, so this is Rolo, he's an 18 month old crossbreed, he arrived with us in July of
01:182023 as a four month old stray, he'd been found tied to a tree with two broken back
01:23legs so he came in with us and then went straight to the vet to get his legs fixed
01:28and then straight into a foster home so he could recover and then he came back into kennels
01:32in around November time and he's been with us ever since so he's still only about 18
01:37months old and as you can see he's a big lad so he's absolutely full of beans, raring to
01:43go but he is super clever, he loves learning new things and he's super foodie, he's looking
01:49for an adult only home so as much as he looks big and tough he's actually a very sensitive
01:54thing, over, over, yes good girl, and, yes good girl.
02:04So this is Rainbow, she's four years old, she's a Jack Russell and Chihuahua cross but
02:09don't be fooled she's not a handbag dog, she likes training, she likes to be kept busy,
02:14she's really smart, she's not one for just snuggling on the sofa so her perfect owners
02:19are going to be people who want to do loads of fun training with her, yes you are.
02:23So we have a wide variety of dogs, we have small, large, different ages, different breeds,
02:29they're all desperate for their forever home so we are very much looking forward to welcoming
02:33people and trying to find them their lovely homes.
02:36So it can widely vary for every dog that comes in, some might be with us just a few weeks,
02:40for others it might be a few months and for some that little bit longer but they do stay
02:43in our care until we make sure we find that right home for them.
02:46Are there concerns about people adopting as presents maybe around Christmas?
02:50Yeah, there is always because, you know, as our slogan says, a dog is for life not just
02:55for Christmas so we need to ensure that when they're going into their homes that it is
03:00something that's really being considered, that they're in a position to be able to provide
03:04that lifetime care for the dog whether that be financial, with the vet costs involved
03:09or the time that's needed to train that dog and settle it into a home so yes we want to
03:13make sure that anyone who's thinking of adopting a dog has really put that time and consideration
03:19into it and committing for a lifetime.
