Parishioners gathered in the town of San Andres Larrainzar on Monday (October 21) to say their final goodbyes to a Mexican Catholic priest who was killed on Sunday (October 20) in the southern state of Chiapas after officiating a mass.

00:16Marcelo Perez, who was Tzotzil, an indigenous Maya group native to the area, was leaving
00:22the neighborhood of Cuxtitali in San Cristobal de las Casas, one of the state's largest cities,
00:29returning to his home church nearby when he was killed.
00:33According to state prosecutors, two people on a motorcycle came up to his car, a white
00:39Ford, and shot him.
00:42Mexico has seen a streak of murders in the past few weeks, including the beheading of
00:46the mayor of the state capital of Guerrero and an intra-cartel war in Sinaloa, which
00:52has left hundreds dead or missing.
00:55Perez's community said that he had actively spoken out against organized crime in the
00:59area.
01:00At the funeral, dozens of mourning locals surrounded the coffin with the body of Perez
01:05and participated in a mass to honor him.
01:09During her morning conference on Monday, Mexican President Claudia Shinbaum lamented the killing
01:15and said an investigation is undergoing.
