00:00I had the great good fortune of clerking for the justice whom I replaced, Justice Breyer,
00:07and one of the things that I try to do is emulate his way of being in the court,
00:15which is, and I talk about this in the book, I talk about my clerkship, I talk about how he was
00:21as a justice in terms of modeling this kind of ability to be optimistic, to brush himself off
00:30and go back into the conference with the other justices. You're talking about a branch of
00:36government, an institution that consists of nine people, so you really do, with lifetime appointments,
00:43so you really do have to get along, and I think one of the most important things is to try not
00:50to take anything personally. We do get the opportunity to voice our disagreements in the
00:58form of writing separately, and we lay out on the table what our views are. If they differ from
01:05the majority, then we write a dissent, and then we put it behind us, because that's the way the
01:11institution is set up, and as you say, it's necessary for us to be able to do our jobs.
