00:00Hey what's up, MKBHD here, and welcome to TechTember, that's what we're calling it, brought
00:09to you by the waveform shirt of course, link down below.
00:12Let me just say, this is going to be a pretty action-packed month, and then like just getting
00:18into the rest of the year, but there's a lot of good stuff coming, trust me.
00:21I've tweeted about it, I've teased it a little bit, just make sure, if you haven't hit that
00:25notification bell on the channel yet, this would be a good time.
00:29So now that I've primed you for it a bit, this is the first thing we're taking a look
00:33at, which is a first look at the Razr 2.
00:38This is it, it's the new Razr.
00:41So time flies, it seems like just yesterday we were seeing the first folding phones, and
00:46right away now we're on the second generation, and the second generation to me is where the
00:52most interesting stuff happens.
00:53See the first gen stuff, it's all cool, but it's a lot of proof of concept, testing the
00:58motors, let's see if this works or not.
01:00The second generation is where the adjustments are made, it's where they heard our voices,
01:04it's where they know what tech to improve, what design to improve, and what to actually
01:09work on, and what to drop, what to forget about.
01:13So this is the second gen Moto Razr, and to me what I'm seeing here is Motorola really
01:17doubling down on almost everything.
01:20You can see the design is basically the same, it's that vertical flip phone foldable, but
01:26with some little dimension and shape tweaks for this one.
01:29So it looks like it's about the same thickness, but the chin here is now tapered, so it feels
01:34a little bit thinner.
01:36The fingerprint reader that used to be on the chin has now moved to the Motorola logo
01:39on the back, and honestly I like that a lot, it feels like a throwback to a lot of the
01:43other Motorola phones back in the day where there was always a dimple on the back.
01:48And the bottom of the phone is now a little bit different, it's a more traditional looking
01:51bottom with the speaker, and the USB-C port, and now a physical SIM card tray.
01:56And then the button layout has also been adjusted a little bit.
01:59The power button moved over to the left while the volume rocker stayed on the right.
02:04Nice.
02:05And there's three colors now.
02:06So this is your exclusive look at all three colors in one shot, you're not gonna see this
02:10anywhere else.
02:11This is your polished graphite, the dark one.
02:14Then liquid mercury is the silver one, and blush gold over here, which is all the rage.
02:19And the color moves right up into the body and the bezels all around the display, so
02:24you can even see it from the front, you'll never not know which color you have.
02:27So it's clearly a bunch of little things, right?
02:29It still looks almost the same from afar, still evokes all the same nostalgic flip
02:34phone feelings, but I think these are all good adjustments.
02:37And then there's a new 48 megapixel f1.7 main camera with OIS here on the front.
02:45So the camera was a pretty big weakness on the first Razr, and from the few photos I
02:49have taken messing around with this new one, it doesn't look like a drastic change, right?
02:54It's still kind of a small camera module.
02:56It's an improvement from the first one, don't get me wrong, but this isn't a multi-camera
03:02flagship array with an ultrawide and a telephoto and everything like that.
03:07It's more of a bump up in the lane they were already in.
03:10Really, the bigger change you'll actually notice here with the camera is the new camera
03:14UI, because they've redone the layout of the camera app, so it's a bit simpler with just
03:18photos and videos readily accessible, and then all your other modes tucked away neatly.
03:23But you know, I kind of get the feeling that cameras are going to be the limitation of
03:28this form factor in general.
03:29Like anyone who goes for this thin vertical flip style, it's so thin that you can't really
03:36fit a huge array of flagship cameras in something like this.
03:41So it's better, of course, than last year, but this isn't about to jump to be like a
03:46flagship camera array.
03:47You see this?
03:48The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra with the huge camera bump?
03:51You literally can't fit that in the top of the Razr, so it's just the lane that it's in.
03:56Now, Motorola has also updated the hinge here on the Razr, you know, the most important
04:01part of a folding phone that helps you get that satisfying close.
04:06So it goes from the aluminum body up here to a stainless steel gapless hinge.
04:10Now they call it a zero gap hinge, but that's not because there's no gaps ever in it.
04:14It's because the hinge itself allows it to fold completely flat with no gaps in the
04:18middle, which is awesome.
04:20But the hinge itself still does have the tiniest gap behind the display and you can kind of
04:26see it a bit as it's folding.
04:29And really the folding mechanism with the display moving down a little bit into the
04:32bezel as you close it is still the same.
04:35It's not a complete re-engineering.
04:37It's kind of like what Samsung did with the fold.
04:38It's just a little cleaner, hopefully a little more durable than the previous version from
04:42last year.
04:43But still, if you look to the sides of the display, you can actually see the gears of
04:47the hinge turning in on each other as you fold them open and closed.
04:52And the main display itself is going to be a 6.2 inch OLED again, same shape, same notch
04:58at the top.
05:00And I was actually thinking visually, it looked like there was a lot less visible crease with
05:05this version.
05:06But then as I started folding it and using it more and more for a couple of days, slowly
05:09the crease became visible again in this very unique triple crease look because of the
05:15back plate behind it.
05:16And again, it's not a huge deal if you're using the phone like normal, just looking
05:20at content on the screen.
05:22But if you're looking for the crease, it's still there.
05:24And also, I've got to say, I've always found these a little bit difficult to quickly open
05:30with one hand.
05:32And I think part of it is because it's a glossy phone and it's a little bit slippery.
05:37I know it would take a bit away from the nostalgia, but I think some of these are going
05:41to need like a little notch, a little cutout indent at the bottom.
05:44So you're able to quickly open it and confidently not think you're going to drop it.
05:50It's a small thing, but it would help usability a lot.
05:54Closing it is still awesome though.
05:56Also, Motorola in their marketing language says that this is again a, what did I say?
06:01A water repellent design.
06:04That's not like an IP rating.
06:06That's not water resistance of any kind.
06:08It's really just saying that there are parts behind the display that if there's a little
06:11condensation or a little extra moisture, it will protect those parts.
06:16But yeah, this is still definitely a phone you're going to want to protect from water.
06:20Don't go dunking this in water thinking it's water repellent.
06:22So pretty much everything we've gone over so far, minor changes, right?
06:26Very familiar phone.
06:27I think the last two are probably the most telling as far as what Motorola's strategy
06:33is with Razer.
06:35And that is the specs and the software.
06:38So the specs are Snapdragon 765G, which makes it 5G capable, 256 gigs of storage and eight
06:45gigs of RAM.
06:46So not the highest end, most power hungry chip, which is probably smart for a phone
06:51with a 2,800 milliamp hour battery like this.
06:54But that also tells me this form factor isn't ready for peak flagship hardware yet.
07:00Like you can't fit, you just can't fit a flagship sized battery in here.
07:04You can't fit flagship sized camera array in this phone.
07:08You can't fit a flagship processor and specs in here, at least not yet anyway.
07:12So that shows Motorola is set on this form factor, at least for Razer, and they're going
07:17to do the best they can within it.
07:19But what I like is that they've put a lot of thought into how people use this Razer
07:24form factor and the software with the outside display, especially is like the best show
07:29of that.
07:30So there's a new card UI here, which makes it more quickly useful for launching apps
07:34and addressing notifications.
07:36Basically the outside screen of the Razer is definitely its biggest advantage over something
07:40like the Z Flip, which just has a tiny outside screen for the time.
07:44And so why not double down on it, right?
07:46You can quick launch apps.
07:48You can use those cards.
07:49You can even pull up a full size keyboard and type on it if you want to, which you
07:53probably don't want to, but you can, or you can watch YouTube videos on it.
07:57Nothing will really stop you or limit you here.
07:59It's a whole launcher and everything.
08:01So Motorola knows that outside display on the Razer is a big deal.
08:04It's an advantage they have over other vertical folding phones, and they're going to make
08:08sure we can do anything we want with it.
08:10But basically that's about it.
08:12Overall, it's a pretty minor update.
08:14There's no high refresh rate.
08:15There's no wireless charging.
08:17There's no crazy design change or anything like that.
08:20It's a lot of what we expected, but also includes still all of Motorola's very underrated
08:26software optimization.
08:27It still has double chop for the flashlight, still has double rotate for the camera.
08:32All that's still here.
08:33So now the question is, for the price, this is again going to be $1399.
08:38And for this price, for the second version, the question is a little harder.
08:42Does the nostalgia still hit the same way that makes you want to spend that much on
08:47a folding phone?
08:49You know, knowing it's probably going to get better again, the next generation.
08:52I know the first one came out and everyone went, Oh, I don't care how much that is.
08:55That nostalgia was powerful.
08:57I got to have that phone.
08:58I don't care how much.
09:00And so that sold a few of them and people like the Razer.
09:03But now that it's starting to evolve a little bit, is this still going to be a phone you
09:07want for 1400 bucks?
09:10Questions out there.
09:11Let me know what you think in the comment section below.
09:12Either way, that's been it.
09:14Thanks for watching and I'll catch you very soon in the next one.
09:18Peace!
