Camping with my 5 yr old son in the snow without a tent while hiking and exploring New England. Exploring frozen waterfalls and canyons. The whole family is in New England camping exploring and adventuring. We didnt have a tent with us so we had to make a shelter with a tarp and my backpacking wood stove.

00:00Luke and Nate here at the Outdoor Boys YouTube channel and we're here in the White Mountains of New Hampshire
00:04And it is a balmy 18 degrees Fahrenheit and we are gonna do
00:10Some serious hiking and winter camping you ready Nate? Yeah. All right. Let's do this
00:30Oh
00:42Yeah, I would make a good campfire too, wouldn't it?
00:46No no no no no no
00:58Oh, that's cool
01:15What do you think Aiden, is this cool?
01:41Yeah.
01:42Oh, we need to find a little cave like that, but one without water going through it.
02:08It's been fun, but it's time to leave the trail behind.
02:16I mean this isn't a bad spot, we can clear away the snow, put the tarp, it'd be small,
02:22but that's not a bad spot to consider.
02:25We'll look around a little bit if we don't find something better, we can come back to
02:28that.
02:29The snow's not too deep, but it's really good, we got our gaiters on.
02:34Even a little bit of snow down your boots will melt and get your feet soaking wet and
02:38frozen.
02:42Oh ho, this is birch bark, and it's a really good fire starter.
02:50Oh, I see a big rock, we could build a shelter up against this rock, we'd have water nearby.
02:57Yeah, look at that, that's pretty cozy, yeah it wouldn't take much to build a nice spot.
03:05Lots of dead wood around, that's good.
03:08Hi Daddy!
03:09Hi bud, do we camp here?
03:35We've got to kind of test this spot out.
03:37Make sure it's comfortable.
03:41It's a little lumpy, I'm not going to lie, but it's better than most.
03:46Is that ok?
03:47Alright.
03:56Alright.
04:03Daddy?
04:07Daddy?
04:37Alright.
04:45Ok, crawl in.
04:50Well now I've got to make a hot tent using only this tarp, so we'll see how that goes.
05:07Alright.
05:22That'll keep the chimney from melting the tarp right there.
05:27Well it's pretty cozy in here, this is going to work out pretty well.
05:31I need to do a few things to secure this tarp, get a little bit more out of my way.
05:35I need to shove my bag down there to plug up that hole.
05:38But I am worried that if I fire up that stove, it's going to start melting the ice and snow
05:44all along this wall.
05:46I don't want it dripping down onto me.
05:48So I think I might fire that up first and see if the water runs down the rock or if
05:53it drips.
05:54We're going to need to get a lot of firewood, luckily there's a lot of dead wood around.
06:00That'll do.
06:04Alright.
06:34Alright.
06:50Well it's getting dark quickly and the sun's about to set, and I've spent the last three
06:54hours cutting firewood, and I think I have plenty.
06:58My brain's still in Alaska mode, where the sun sets at 3.30pm and comes up at 10.30am,
07:04so you need a ton of firewood to make it through the night.
07:07Here in New England it's not that bad, so I probably have way more firewood than I need.
07:12But Nathan's been sleeping, and taking a little bit of a nap, which makes me happy here.
07:16I'm going to get the tent all warm and get some food made, and I'm going to wake him up.
07:21Alright, I've got a cotton ball and I've put some petroleum jelly on it, and we're going
07:36to light this sucker on fire.
07:39And it will light very well.
07:44The chimney seems to be working good, the tarp looks like it's in good shape.
07:54Excellent.
08:03This water's so clean I doubt there's anything wrong with it, but we're going to boil it
08:08anyways.
08:10My drinking bottles, I'm going to keep them right here near the stove so they don't freeze
08:19tonight.
08:25Hey Nathan, Nathan buddy.
08:27Nathan, do you want a cup of noodle?
08:30Yeah.
08:31Hey buddy, did you have a good nap?
08:34Yeah.
08:36Alright, here we go.
08:39Let's grab it with the handle, it's hot.
08:48Just, whatever you do, you cannot spill it in your bed.
08:53That taste good bud?
08:55Good.
08:56My wood hasn't been lighting as good as I'd hoped because it's all very cold and a little
09:00bit wet.
09:01So, I'm putting it up here and letting it dry out.
09:04And once I need some wood, I can shove it in and it lights a lot better.
09:07Yeah.
09:28Yeah, chicken teriyaki.
09:30There's my jam.
09:34I'm so hungry.
09:40Yeah, that taste good.
09:43Daddy, want some?
09:55I'll take it on a kettle.
09:57Be real careful.
09:58Is that good hot chocolate?
10:00Yep, it's like normal.
10:01So, you're still hungry?
10:04I have a snack bag for just such an issue.
10:09Now, we have some Halloween candy.
10:11We have giant marshmallows, strawberry, and vanilla.
10:20Well, so far I've been lucky and there's been no dripping on me.
10:23There's a few places where water is running down the rock, but it's not dripping on me.
10:28So, I think it's safe to pull out my sleeping bag.
10:32My feet get really cold in my bag, so I've got these down booties.
10:35And they are really, really good at keeping my feet warm.
10:44I got a bunch of these adhesive hand warmers.
10:46I don't think Nathan needs them because he's got a great sleeping bag.
10:50Mine's a little light for this weather.
10:52So, I am going to load up on hand warmers.
10:56They say these things last 12 hours, but I've had them last much longer.
11:02I've had boys wear them for 24 hours and they're still really warm.
11:06Oh, that feels nice.
11:10Well, it's only about 7 o'clock and Nathan had a pretty long nap.
11:14So, I promised him we'd watch some TV shows on my phone.
11:17We're just going to snuggle up all warm in our sleeping bags and hang out together for a little bit.
11:22I'm going to keep this fire going and we'll see.
11:26It's supposed to get really cold tonight.
11:29It was a high in the 20s today and the low is probably going to be in the single digits.
11:40Got a little bit of snow last night.
11:43Hehe.
11:58Good to see smoke coming out of that thing.
12:01I really should have brought a pee bottle.
12:04I hate getting out to go to the bathroom.
12:07Alright, it's breakfast time.
12:09We've got biscuits and gravy.
12:12It's freeze dried.
12:18Hey Nathan, you sleep well?
12:19Yeah.
12:20Good.
12:26Alright, we've got some breakfast marshmallows.
12:32What do you think Nathan, is that a perfect marshmallow?
12:34Yep.
12:35There you go, breakfast marshmallows.
12:42We got him flipped.
12:46Well, we've done a lot of winter camping with these two sleeping bags.
12:49And I've got to tell you, I really like Nathan's.
12:52Feathered Friends makes this. It's the negative 25 Plover. It's the women's bag.
12:57And I just had them shorten it so that it fits Nathan.
13:00And it has just been so awesome, man.
13:03He doesn't need hand warmers.
13:06When it's zero degrees out, he is so toasty.
13:10This is a true negative 25 bag and it's got a waterproof shell.
13:13This North Face Inferno, I'm not quite as happy with.
13:16It's a really comfortable bag and it moves with you really well.
13:20And I like the zippers up the chest instead of the side.
13:23It makes it a lot easier to get in and out of.
13:25But this is not a negative 20 bag.
13:27At best, it's a zero degree bag.
13:29And the way it's built, the down shifts around a lot when you stuff it in the stuff sack.
13:33Like right here, I've got no insulation.
13:36I mean, this is just fabric.
13:38There is no feathers here.
13:39And right here, I've got a ton of feathers.
13:41And so you'll wake up all night with weird patches of your body really cold.
13:45Like right in your lower back, your butt, your thigh.
13:48I like a lot of things about this North Face Inferno, but it's just not that warm.
13:53I'm going to go order one of these for me when we get home.
13:56Do you like it, Nathan?
13:57I love it! I love it, I love it. I love it so much.
14:00You ready to get out of your sleeping bag and get dressed?
14:04Well, I'm not in love with the idea of getting out of my sleeping bag.
14:10I am excited for the hike back, though.
14:12We're not just going to backtrack the way we came.
14:14We're going to go a different route.
14:16And we're going to hike past a gorge and some waterfalls and see some pretty cool scenery.
14:21So I'm looking forward to that.
14:23But first, I need to get up and get packed.
14:28Oh no, I stacked my boots up on my sleeping bag last night.
14:31Look what happened.
14:34Oh!
14:37I've got to go out there without shoes and go get them and dry them off.
14:41I've got to use my clown shoes.
14:48That looks cold.
14:51I like that you can go out in the snow with these booties.
14:54The bottom is waterproof and there's no tread so it doesn't track snow back into the tent.
15:04I was taking down the tarp and the tarp fell onto the stove for just a second and burned a hole right in it.
15:13Oh, this was a fun campsite.
15:15This turned out a lot better than I expected.
15:17But I thought we got a really fun return hike.
15:19We're going to go past some waterfalls and see some other stuff.
15:21I'm excited.
15:23I'm excited.
15:25I'm excited.
15:27I'm excited.
15:29I'm excited.
15:31I'm excited.
15:33I'm excited.
15:35I'm excited.
15:37I'm excited.
15:39I'm excited.
15:41We're going to go see some other stuff. I'm excited.
15:43You ready, Nathan?
15:45Let's do it. I'll follow you.
15:58I swear that backpack is bigger than you are, Nathan.
16:03Well, right now, me and my whole family are spending a little over a week in Maine.
16:09and all sorts of fun things.
16:11And we're doing a whole video about that trip.
16:13If you guys want to see that video,
16:15I'll put a link in the video description to that.
16:17You ready to go downhill, Nate?
16:18Yeah.
16:19Go!
16:19Ah!
16:20We're going to die!
16:22Whoa!
16:23Oh, God!
16:24Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha,
16:27I killed Nathan!
16:29Are you OK?
16:30Yeah.
16:31Ha, ha, ha, you're still going to go ahead and run downhill,
16:34yeah, even though you've crashed twice, aren't you?
16:36OK.
16:36Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha,
16:39we don't learn our lessons.
16:41Oh, we don't learn our lessons!
16:44Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha,
16:48at least I didn't do that one.
16:56Oh, careful, you don't tear your pants.
16:58Whoa, look at that.
17:02Look at that, that's cool.
17:04Yeah, we've got to hike all the way around.
17:10Yeah, look at this.
17:13Yeah, check it out, these beams are hand-hewed.
17:16These are cut with an ax.
17:18Oh, man, that's cool.
17:21Oh, daddy, I'm off.
17:24Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha,
17:28cool.
17:30Yeah, there's so many awesome hikes
17:31that get kind of ruined because they're too popular.
17:34But you come in the wintertime like this,
17:36oh, you get it all to yourself.
17:38It's just so nice.
17:46We're going to, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
17:51We don't learn our lesson, do we?
17:53We're close to the end.
