Deranged is a Canadian-American horror film made in 1974 and directed by Alan Ormsby and Jeff Gillen. It is also known by the title Deranged: The Confessions of a Necrophile in the USA. It is a low-budget movie that has since become something of a cult film and is based on the life of Ed Gein. The title is, however, misleading since Ed Gein never experimented with necrophilia; although a necrophile is also defined as "an obsessive fascination with death and corpses."

00:00:00You
00:00:30You
00:01:00You
00:01:11My name is Tom Sims, I'm a newspaper columnist
00:01:17Several years ago. I covered firsthand the incredible story. You are about to see recreated in this motion picture
00:01:25it is a human horror story of ghastly proportions and
00:01:30profound reverberations
00:01:33But because it is human perhaps we can learn something from it
00:01:37something of ourselves
00:01:40of our own fears and needs
00:01:42but please
00:01:44Let me warn you
00:01:46The events have been recreated in detail
00:01:51Nothing has been left to the imagination. It is not a story for the squeamish or the faint-hearted
00:02:00Now that you stand warned we can proceed with our story
00:02:05It is the story of Ezra Cobb murderer grave robber
00:02:11Necrophiliac perhaps or as you may remember him from those stories of long ago the butcher of Woodside
00:02:19When Ezra was 10, his father died. For the next 15 years, Ez and his mother worked the farm by themselves, growing more dependent on each other with the passage of time. Then Amanda Cobb suffered a paralyzing stroke which crippled her body from the waist down and left her bedridden. Ez brought her downstairs, sealing off the upstairs room so he could be closer to her.
00:02:50For 12 years he slept outside her door, waiting on her, feeding her, bathing her, reading to her,
00:02:58comforting her.
00:02:59To his neighbors, he was a devoted son.
00:03:03But that devotion masked a growing psychosis which came to the surface when his mother died.
00:03:20Mama?
00:03:23Brought you some soup, mama?
00:03:26It's good and hot today.
00:03:38Ez?
00:03:42Take my hand.
00:03:46Are you holding my hand?
00:03:49Yes.
00:03:51I can't feel you.
00:03:54Cold, must be.
00:03:56Draft.
00:04:07Just got to get the circulation going again, that's all.
00:04:10So it's to be now then, is it?
00:04:15I can't see you too clearly, Ez. You look blurred.
00:04:19You're tired, mama, is all.
00:04:22Here, I brought you some soup.
00:04:24No.
00:04:25Good and hot.
00:04:26No, I'm not tired and I don't want no soup.
00:04:30I'm dying.
00:04:31No, mama.
00:04:32I'm dying and that's all there is to it.
00:04:34No, you just need some rest, Ez.
00:04:37You be quiet and listen to me.
00:04:39If I go into a coma, don't take me to no hospital.
00:04:42I want to die in my own bed, my own room, with you here.
00:04:47If you need any help later, after I'm gone, call Maureen Selby.
00:04:55Say it now, Ez. Maureen Selby.
00:04:59Maureen Selby.
00:05:03Maureen's the only woman I ever did trust.
00:05:06She's fat, that's why. A big heifer.
00:05:09But she's the only good-hearted woman I ever knew.
00:05:13As for the rest of them,
00:05:15a lot of filthy, black-souled sluts with pus-filled sores and...
00:05:23Ez. Ez.
00:05:27I... I... I can't breathe.
00:05:33You're going to be all right.
00:05:35You just need something to eat, that's all.
00:05:39Honest.
00:05:40Honest.
00:05:41No, I'm... I'm leaving you now.
00:05:45That's for certain.
00:05:47And I don't want to leave worrying about you.
00:05:51Oh, you're such a babe in the woods.
00:05:55A child.
00:05:57I sheltered you too much, I guess.
00:06:00But I just know some money-stealing bitch
00:06:04is going to come along and try to take advantage of you.
00:06:09Remember what I've always told you.
00:06:12The wages of sin is gonorrhea, syphilis, and death.
00:06:17They'll use their bodies to... to steal from you.
00:06:22They'll steal your life and your soul.
00:06:27Leave them alone.
00:06:29Most of them are filled with disease as a tick.
00:06:34But God'll wash them away,
00:06:37like he did in the time of Noah.
00:06:42God looked upon the earth,
00:06:45and behold, it was corrupt.
00:06:48For all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.
00:06:53And then God said unto Noah,
00:06:56The end of all flesh has come before me.
00:07:01Did you know what God did then, S?
00:07:04Yes, ma'am. Flood.
00:07:07Yes, sir. The flood.
00:07:11Oh, I wish I could be here to see it.
00:07:17You're still a handsome young man, S.
00:07:21You have great attraction for the opposite sex.
00:07:25That's why you've got to be...
00:07:29so careful.
00:07:31Oh, S.
00:07:34It hurts.
00:07:37Hurts.
00:07:39Eat.
00:07:41You'll be all right. Honest.
00:07:48Oh, oh.
00:07:50Oh, you won't die. Honest.
00:07:55Oh.
00:07:59Please, Mama. Please, Mama, don't leave me.
00:08:06Mama, no, please.
00:08:08Oh, please.
00:08:10Oh.
00:08:13Mama.
00:08:24Mama.
00:08:54Mama.
00:09:25Come on, now, S.
00:09:30We're so sorry, S.
00:09:41She was a great lady, S.
00:09:44Real.
00:09:48Real to me, though, her.
00:09:55Real religious.
00:10:03The boys wanted to come, S, but...
00:10:06well, I didn't think they should.
00:10:09But they do send their condolences, though.
00:10:19She looks nice, S.
00:10:22Real natural.
00:10:26You'd think she was just sleeping.
00:10:33She is.
00:10:40That's all it is.
00:10:45Just sleeping.
00:10:47Just sleeping.
00:11:12A month passed. Six months.
00:11:15A year.
00:11:17Still, Ezra refused to accept the death of his mother.
00:11:21He visited her grave as often as four or five times a week.
00:11:25And at home...
00:11:27At home, he continued as though she were only away on a trip.
00:11:31He kept her room neat and clean...
00:11:33and made sure the stove was always going...
00:11:35so it would be warm when she returned to him.
00:11:38He dreamed about her...
00:11:40and in his despair even wrote letters to her.
00:11:44To the outside world, Ez was a little eccentric, maybe...
00:11:48but basically a normal, decent guy.
00:11:51He quit farming altogether...
00:11:53and hired on as a general handyman for his neighbors...
00:11:56and especially his good friend, Harlan Coots.
00:11:59Come on, it's time to go.
00:12:01Okay, Mom.
00:12:03Bye.
00:12:05But the loneliness within him had grown to a vast abyss...
00:12:08and the pain of his loss at last pushed him over the precipice...
00:12:12and into madness.
00:12:14Oh.
00:12:18When are you coming home again?
00:12:27I'm real lonesome, Mama.
00:12:32There's nothing but snow...
00:12:35and snow...
00:12:37and snow.
00:12:39And the wind blowin', and blowin', and blowin'.
00:12:44And it's so cold.
00:12:48And I miss you with all my heart.
00:12:53Amen.
00:13:00If you miss me so much, why don't you come and bring me home?
00:13:06Mama!
00:13:09You should be ashamed of yourself...
00:13:12leaving me here...
00:13:14more than a year now...
00:13:17all alone...
00:13:19here in the dark.
00:13:21Shame is!
00:13:24Mama...
00:13:26I wrote to you.
00:13:29Don't get no letters here.
00:13:33Now why don't you come and bring me home?
00:13:38Bring me home.
00:13:40Bring me home.
00:13:45I'm coming, Mama!
00:13:48And so he went to bring her home.
00:14:07Perhaps in his twisted mind...
00:14:10he imagined she would look the way she had in life.
00:14:37I'm taking you home, Mama.
00:15:08Home...
00:15:10still...
00:15:14She's the girl of my dreams...
00:15:18and her fair face beams.
00:15:21She's the sweetheart of Sigma Chi.
00:15:37Mama!
00:15:56What in the hell do you think you're doing, Es?
00:15:59Nothing, sir.
00:16:01What do you mean?
00:16:03Oh, come on. You know what I mean.
00:16:07Well, she wanted to come home, sir.
00:16:10She told me she did. Otherwise...
00:16:12Now, look, look, look, Es.
00:16:14This is a 35-mile-an-hour zone...
00:16:16and you were going 50 if you were going anything.
00:16:19Now let me smell your breath.
00:16:21Good God!
00:16:23What in the hell is that?
00:16:26What have you been drinking, Es?
00:16:28Goddamn!
00:16:31Nothing, sir.
00:16:33It's just a hog I butchered is all.
00:16:36I forgot to take it out of the truck is all.
00:16:39I kind of got to smell it.
00:16:41Jesus Christ! You ain't kidding!
00:16:46I'm gonna let you go this time, Es...
00:16:48but don't let it happen again, you hear?
00:16:51And for Christ's sake, bury that, will you?
00:16:55Yes, sir.
00:16:57I sure will...
00:16:59at first thing.
00:17:01No more speeding, you hear?
00:17:03Yes, sir.
00:17:05All right.
00:17:16I apologize for calling you a hog, Mama.
00:17:25Get you to bed.
00:17:27You need to lie back down.
00:17:31Fix you up.
00:17:33You won't even know yourself.
00:17:35Honest.
00:17:40See your room?
00:17:43Just like it used to be.
00:18:04Oh, Mama...
00:18:08you're in terrible shape.
00:18:18I'm gonna have to put you back together...
00:18:21like that old Meg and the Fairy story.
00:18:25I'm glad you're home.
00:18:34Is your Bible?
00:18:44Your bed?
00:18:48I'm glad you're home.
00:18:51Your bed?
00:19:01So he'd brought her home.
00:19:03And what now?
00:19:05Now he intended to restore her.
00:19:08And to that purpose, he began reading everything he could...
00:19:12about embalming, hexidermy.
00:19:15But it wasn't an easy job.
00:19:17His mother had been buried for over a year now.
00:19:20There were lots of repairs to make.
00:19:22He tried to patch her with fish skin, with wax,
00:19:25with any substance which he thought resembled human flesh.
00:19:31It wasn't until later...
00:19:33that the idea of using real flesh occurred to him.
00:19:38Ironically enough, it was his friend and neighbor...
00:19:41who accidentally gave him the inspiration.
00:19:43God is great.
00:19:45God is good.
00:19:47Let us thank him for this food.
00:19:49Amen.
00:19:51Oh, and please take good care of old Miss Johnson.
00:19:56Pass the bread to Ezra, will you, Brad?
00:19:58What's the matter with old Miss Johnson?
00:20:00She kicked the bucket.
00:20:02She didn't kick the bucket. She passed away.
00:20:04My Miss Johnson? My old Sunday school teacher?
00:20:06Yeah, the very same one.
00:20:08I don't believe that.
00:20:10It's right here in today's paper. Here it is.
00:20:12Let me see that.
00:20:14It was this afternoon.
00:20:16That lady taught me all through Sunday school...
00:20:19and in the 6th grade.
00:20:21Taught Ez too.
00:20:23Remember that Ez, back in 6th grade?
00:20:25He used to call her Old Flannel Face.
00:20:27Remember that Ez?
00:20:29No, sir.
00:20:31Yeah, that's her. All right.
00:20:34Here, remember her Ez?
00:20:36Well, that's...
00:20:38that's old Miss Johnson there.
00:20:40What's she do in the newspaper?
00:20:42Well, dang it, Ez, I just told you. She's dead.
00:20:45You mean they put her in the...
00:20:47in the paper just because she's dead?
00:20:51What's the matter with you, Ez? That's her danged obituary.
00:20:55Her what?
00:20:57Now, don't tell me you don't know what's an obituary.
00:21:02All right, don't beat off.
00:21:04Well, look, when a body dies...
00:21:06they take all the information and they put it in the newspaper...
00:21:08in the obituary section.
00:21:10And it tells when the funeral is...
00:21:12and where they're being buried and all that kind of stuff.
00:21:14You mean I can find out...
00:21:16where and when somebody's been buried?
00:21:19On the very same day?
00:21:21Right at the end of the tunnel.
00:21:23All right, yes, sir.
00:21:25You're right, Ez.
00:21:27Well, I'm going to look into that.
00:21:29I'd rather read the sports section myself.
00:21:31Not me.
00:21:33This here could be real valuable information.
00:21:35Why? What do you plan to do?
00:21:37Dig them up or something?
00:21:39No, sir.
00:21:41Wouldn't have to dig it all up.
00:21:44Well, I'm sure glad to hear that.
00:21:46Sure, why dig it all up...
00:21:48when you can take the parts you need?
00:21:50Sure, maybe like...
00:21:52like if you need the head...
00:21:54for repairs or something.
00:21:56Well, then, just take the head.
00:22:02You're crazy, S.O.B.
00:22:09Hi, Miss Johnson.
00:22:11Remember me?
00:22:13I used to be in the Sunday school class.
00:22:28There she comes now, real easy.
00:22:34The next thing...
00:22:36to do is get this hair off.
00:22:39All right.
00:23:09All right.
00:23:40See, Mama?
00:23:42All I got to do...
00:23:44is ditch it on you.
00:23:54Look, Mama.
00:23:56I brought you a visitor.
00:24:10Shh.
00:24:12You can't stay too long now.
00:24:21Bet you two ladies have a lot to talk about.
00:24:30After that, Ezra made many visits to the graveyard...
00:24:33bringing home bodies...
00:24:35or parts of bodies...
00:24:37to keep his mother and himself company.
00:24:40He was a ghoul...
00:24:42a necromaniac, a defiler of the dead.
00:24:46But he had not yet turned his sickness on a living victim.
00:24:50It was only a matter of time until he did.
00:24:53We're going to have to take those plugs out too, I think, Ez...
00:24:56and take them into town, either get them cleaned or get new ones.
00:25:08Ez.
00:25:10Sir?
00:25:12Uh...
00:25:14Me and Mother, we've been talking, and, uh...
00:25:18Well, we've been thinking that...
00:25:21Sir?
00:25:23Well, dang it all, first off, stop calling me sir.
00:25:26You're as old as I am.
00:25:28And secondly, stop calling Jenny ma'am.
00:25:30You're a grown man, Ez.
00:25:32You're a grown man.
00:25:34Stop calling Jenny ma'am. You're a grown man, Ez.
00:25:37That's what I want...
00:25:39want to talk to you about.
00:25:41I want to talk to you...
00:25:43man to man.
00:25:45See, we're...
00:25:47Well, Jenny and me, we're worried about you...
00:25:49living up in that old house there all by yourself.
00:25:51And, uh...
00:25:53we just thought that...
00:25:55well, we...
00:25:57Dang it, Jennifer says you should be married...
00:25:59and that's what she says, and that's that, so...
00:26:01Ezra, what my husband means is that...
00:26:03well, we're just kind of worried about you, that's all.
00:26:06And, well, we thought it would be nice...
00:26:08if you could meet someone who...
00:26:10and I'd be glad to introduce you if you wanted...
00:26:12you know, someone nice who...
00:26:14could be a companion for you, that's all.
00:26:17Nope.
00:26:19No.
00:26:21I don't trust him.
00:26:23You don't trust who, Ez?
00:26:25You know...
00:26:27girls and stuff.
00:26:29You're damn right.
00:26:31Don't you know any girls you could trust, Ezra?
00:26:33Nope.
00:26:35Except my mother...
00:26:37Maureen...
00:26:39Selden.
00:26:41See, I can trust her.
00:26:43I know I can trust her.
00:26:45Why do you think you can trust her, Ez?
00:26:48Oh, because...
00:26:50she's fat.
00:26:52I know I can trust her.
00:26:54She's fat.
00:26:56She's fat.
00:26:58Well, then, why don't you give her a call?
00:27:01Think I should?
00:27:03Sure.
00:27:05Go ahead, Ez, why don't you?
00:27:07Maybe you'll help her lose some weight.
00:27:09Ha, ha, ha, ha!
00:27:11Ha, ha, ha, ha!
00:27:13Ha, ha, ha, ha!
00:27:15Oh, come on.
00:27:21Hello?
00:27:23Hello?
00:27:49Yes?
00:27:51Miss Selby?
00:27:53Yes?
00:27:55I'm Ezra Cobb.
00:27:57Yes?
00:27:59Amanda Cobbs, boy.
00:28:02Amanda Cobbs, boy!
00:28:05Oh, come in, dude.
00:28:07Oh, my, yes, Amanda Cobb.
00:28:11I'm so sorry to hear about her passing.
00:28:13Do you know that she and I were once as close as two webbed fingers?
00:28:18Something happened.
00:28:20I don't know, she took on a grudge or something.
00:28:22You know, she always had a grudge going against somebody.
00:28:25Do sit down.
00:28:27I don't know what it was.
00:28:29I don't like to cast aspersions on the dead.
00:28:31But Amanda did take on a grudge,
00:28:34like a steel trap to a rabbit's foot.
00:28:37So then, whenever I tried to see her,
00:28:39she wouldn't even let me in.
00:28:41Oh, come and sit over here.
00:28:43It's more comfortable, the big cushion.
00:28:48So, uh, so then, I didn't see her again for, oh, many, many years.
00:28:55And, uh, would you like something to drink?
00:29:00No, ma'am.
00:29:02I'm sorry I can't offer you hard liquor,
00:29:04but I have never taken a drink in my life, and I never will.
00:29:08How about some Whitman Sampler?
00:29:11They're my one vice.
00:29:14Dammit.
00:29:17Well, Mr. Cobb, what do you do?
00:29:24Ma'am?
00:29:26Well, what do you do?
00:29:29Oh, just, uh, take care of Mama
00:29:33and, uh, keep the house in order, I guess.
00:29:36Take care of Mama?
00:29:38Take care of Mama?
00:29:40You mean your mother?
00:29:42Yes, ma'am.
00:29:44Today at lunch, she said that...
00:29:46Mr. Cobb.
00:29:48You talk to your mother?
00:29:53Yes, ma'am.
00:29:56Mr. Cobb, are you making fun of me?
00:30:02Oh, ma'am.
00:30:04You're sure?
00:30:06Yes, ma'am.
00:30:08Cross my heart.
00:30:11I thought you were making fun of me.
00:30:14A lot of people around here do, you know.
00:30:18They make fun of me because...
00:30:21because...
00:30:24I talk to Herbert.
00:30:27Herbert?
00:30:29My late husband.
00:30:31I talk to him all the time.
00:30:36Oh, I did everything but get down on my knees.
00:30:42This is his picture, see?
00:30:45He was killed four years ago.
00:30:48Burned up in an automobile accident on Route 7.
00:30:53We were very happy.
00:30:55We still are.
00:30:57At least he tells me he is.
00:30:58I spoke to him last night.
00:31:01Say, Ezra, you know what we ought to do.
00:31:03Is it all right if I call you Ezra?
00:31:05Yes, ma'am.
00:31:07Well, Ezra, why don't we all get together some night
00:31:11and hold a four-way seance?
00:31:13You, me, Herbert and Amanda.
00:31:16That is, if Amanda's speaking to me nowadays.
00:31:19What do you say?
00:31:21Uh, you mean, uh, all get together and talk?
00:31:25Oh, yes. Oh, it'll be such fun.
00:31:27Herbert's never met Amanda. Please.
00:31:31I don't know.
00:31:34Well, uh, I'll ask her.
00:31:37Make it Thursday night. Shake on it.
00:31:46She is fat, Mama, just like you said.
00:31:52But I like that fat.
00:31:57Big arms, place just hanging down.
00:32:01I like that.
00:32:04Her legs, too.
00:32:06Big and round, like big old drumsticks.
00:32:10She's got a cute little belly.
00:32:12Cute as can be.
00:32:17Of course, I'd hate to get stuck in all that fat
00:32:22and not be able to get out.
00:32:25Actually, I'll take some protection along just in case.
00:32:34You know, the only thing that bothers me,
00:32:40I don't think she's, uh, you know, all there in the upstairs.
00:32:48You know what I mean?
00:32:56Herbert wants to talk to me tonight. I can feel it.
00:33:01All we have to do is concentrate.
00:33:07Can you concentrate, Es?
00:33:11Yes.
00:33:14Close your eyes, then, and concentrate.
00:33:26Herbert.
00:33:30Herbert.
00:33:32Herbert.
00:33:34Enter me.
00:33:36Oh, enter me, Herbert.
00:33:38Enter me.
00:33:40Enter me.
00:33:42Enter me.
00:33:44Ah.
00:33:46Ah, yes.
00:33:48Ah.
00:33:50Herbert, I hear you.
00:33:53Yes.
00:33:55Can you hear me?
00:33:57You can.
00:33:59Oh, good.
00:34:01Then listen, Herbert.
00:34:03I have a new friend here tonight.
00:34:08His name is Ezra Cobb.
00:34:13And he's...
00:34:15He's very nice-looking, Herbert.
00:34:19He's tall and straight and strong.
00:34:26And he's...
00:34:29He's the right age.
00:34:33What, Herbert?
00:34:36Oh.
00:34:38Oh.
00:34:40Herbert, I can't ask him that.
00:34:47Ask him what?
00:34:49Oh, Herbert, that is so sweet and unselfish of you.
00:34:58What does he want?
00:35:00Oh.
00:35:02Oh.
00:35:04Ez.
00:35:07He says...
00:35:09He says...
00:35:11The carnal aspect of our marriage.
00:35:16Carnival?
00:35:18Oh, no, no.
00:35:20The...
00:35:22You know, our sex life.
00:35:26Oh, yes, it was beautiful, Herbert.
00:35:32What kind of... What fever does he want?
00:35:38Oh, Ez.
00:35:41Herbert says...
00:35:44He's going to talk to you himself.
00:35:50Oh.
00:35:52Oh.
00:35:54Oh.
00:35:58Ezra.
00:36:02Ezra Cobb.
00:36:09Yes, sir. Yes, ma'am.
00:36:12Ezra.
00:36:15This is Herbert.
00:36:20Will you do me a favor, Ezra?
00:36:28If I... If I can, sir.
00:36:31Make my wife a woman again.
00:36:42How do you mean, sir?
00:36:47She needs love, Ezra.
00:36:55Physical love.
00:37:00The kind I can no longer give her.
00:37:09Oh, touch her, Ezra.
00:37:12Feel how soft she is.
00:37:18Oh.
00:37:22Oh.
00:37:26It's been so long.
00:37:32Oh, come, Ezra.
00:37:40Go with her.
00:37:43Do her that favor.
00:37:47Make love to her.
00:37:49It's been so long.
00:37:52She needs it, Ezra.
00:37:54Ezra, she needs it.
00:37:57She needs it, Ezra.
00:37:59Come into...
00:38:19Come.
00:38:21Come.
00:38:23Come.
00:38:24Come.
00:38:27Oh, yes.
00:38:28Come.
00:38:29Come.
00:38:30Come.
00:38:33Oh, yes.
00:38:35Yes.
00:38:36Make love to me, darling.
00:38:40The wages of sin is gonorrhea, syphilis, and death.
00:38:46It's been so long, dear.
00:38:49So long.
00:38:52You know what God done then, don't you, boy?
00:38:55Yes, sir.
00:38:57Take off your pants, darling.
00:39:03Herman.
00:39:06There you are, darling.
00:39:09There you are.
00:39:13Scum.
00:39:16Death.
00:39:19Death.
00:39:22Huh?
00:39:24Ezra?
00:39:25What's that?
00:39:27Ezra?
00:39:45The death of Marine Selby did not seem to affect Ezra duly.
00:39:49He went on as if nothing had happened, except for one thing.
00:39:54Now he began to seek the companionship of women.
00:39:57He sought it in strange places,
00:39:59none stranger than Goldie's Tavern.
00:40:04Her name was Mary Ransom.
00:40:06She was 34 years old,
00:40:07and if truth were told, a little over the hill.
00:40:10But Ezra had never seen a woman like her before,
00:40:12beautiful, promiscuous,
00:40:14with a constant promise of being available,
00:40:17even perhaps to him.
00:40:19♪ Though she don't speak English and I don't speak French
00:40:23♪ No, she don't speak English
00:40:27♪ But she takes my hand
00:40:29♪ And though I don't speak French
00:40:31Hi, what can I do for you tonight?
00:40:34Just a glass of milk.
00:40:37Well, this is a bar, babe, not a nursery.
00:40:39We don't serve milk here.
00:40:41We serve hard liquor.
00:40:43I don't drink.
00:40:45Oh, I see you came in with the fresh air.
00:40:48I came to see you.
00:40:52Oh, well, uh,
00:40:54would you, uh, be a nice guy to still a minimum, huh?
00:40:57Order a drink?
00:40:58All right.
00:41:00If you tell me what kind to get.
00:41:03Well, um,
00:41:05how about a whiskey sour?
00:41:07It's got cherry in it.
00:41:09Uh, you like them with cherries?
00:41:15Okay, then, that's one, uh,
00:41:19whiskey sour.
00:41:25That'll be $7.50.
00:41:31This is for you.
00:41:34Uh, look, um,
00:41:38well, look, are you sure you can afford this?
00:41:43Well, thanks.
00:41:45I'll just put it in here for safekeeping.
00:41:49What's your name?
00:41:51Mary.
00:41:56Hey, how'd you like to tear off a piece of that, eh?
00:42:00Boy, if I had a chance,
00:42:02I'd bang her brains out.
00:42:04Look at that ass.
00:42:06And look at them tits.
00:42:08Both of them.
00:42:10I've seen tits, and I've seen tits
00:42:12from Portugal to Yokohama.
00:42:14Now, let me tell you,
00:42:17if I was an old man,
00:42:19God damn it,
00:42:21I'd be into her pants so fast
00:42:23it'd make your head swim.
00:42:25That's the trouble.
00:42:27You get old.
00:42:29Can't get it up anymore.
00:42:31You sit there looking at it,
00:42:33hanging limp as a turkey neck.
00:42:35Hell with it.
00:42:37Life's a pain, and God's a sadist.
00:42:39Here she comes.
00:42:41Here you go, babes.
00:42:43Good evening, my dear.
00:42:45Shove it.
00:42:47Come on, try it.
00:42:49Tell me how you like it.
00:42:54Good?
00:42:56Yes.
00:42:58Real good.
00:43:00Go on, now. Drink it up.
00:43:06Mary!
00:43:08Mary!
00:43:10Mary!
00:43:12Mary!
00:43:15It's closing time, Ed.
00:43:17It's time.
00:43:19I'll be on your way.
00:43:21Come on, let me help you.
00:43:23Come on.
00:43:25Out of your...
00:43:27This way.
00:43:33I never drink.
00:43:37I never guessed that, Ed.
00:43:39Okay, hold on.
00:43:41All right.
00:43:43What?
00:43:44What?
00:43:45What?
00:43:46What?
00:43:47Okay.
00:43:48Okay.
00:43:49Now you need your hat off.
00:43:50All right.
00:43:51Yeah.
00:43:52Come on.
00:43:53Mary.
00:43:54Can I ask you something?
00:43:55Mm-hmm.
00:43:56Yeah, sure.
00:43:57I'll get it.
00:43:58Will you kiss me goodnight?
00:43:59Goodnight.
00:44:00Goodnight.
00:44:01Goodnight.
00:44:02Goodnight.
00:44:03Goodnight.
00:44:04Goodnight.
00:44:05Goodnight.
00:44:06Goodnight.
00:44:07Goodnight.

00:44:10Goodnight.
00:44:11Goodnight.
00:44:13Please.
00:44:15Kiss me goodnight.
00:44:16Come here.
00:44:19All right, now.
00:44:21Okay.
00:44:30Night after night, Ezra stood watch at the bar,
00:44:32waiting for the opportunity to be alone with Mary.
00:44:36Then,
00:44:37one night...
00:44:42Don't make me dread it.
00:44:44She winked her eye at another guy.
00:44:46And when they left, here's what she said.
00:44:49Goodbye, rubber head.
00:44:50Go on, move.
00:44:51Go and blow your inner tube.
00:44:54I got a brand new pair of shoes.
00:44:56But goodbye, rubber head.
00:44:57Go on, move.
00:45:00I've boned her twice.
00:45:01She used to say she treats me bad.
00:45:04And after when she's free, I begin to make my poor heart glad.
00:45:08Oh, yes, I've boned her twice.
00:45:11And as the third eye glinted, she left me.
00:45:41Got a brand new pair of shoes.
00:45:43I've boned her twice.
00:45:45And after when she's free, I begin to make my poor heart glad.
00:45:50Oh, yes, I've boned her twice.
00:45:53And after when she's free, I begin to make my poor heart glad.
00:45:57Oh, yes, I've boned her twice.
00:46:02I've boned her twice.
00:46:05What seems to be the trouble?
00:46:07Oh, hello, Ez.
00:46:08Some goddamn punks slashed my goddamn tires.
00:46:12That's the trouble.
00:46:13Can you believe it?
00:46:14Oh, boy.
00:46:16They sure do a job on them, don't they?
00:46:19Yes, sir.
00:46:20You know, kids are like that today.
00:46:22Just as dirty as they can be.
00:46:25Always doing dirty things like that
00:46:27and carrying around a gun.
00:46:29You know, they're just as dirty as they can be.
00:46:32Always doing dirty things like that
00:46:34and carrying on.
00:46:36Just plain dirty.
00:46:37No other word for it.
00:46:38Look, Ez, could you just give me a lift
00:46:40down to the filling station or something, huh?
00:46:42Why, sure, if you want me to.
00:46:44Okay, thanks a lot.
00:46:45I really appreciate it.
00:46:46Sure, any little thing there.
00:46:47Anything I can do.
00:46:51Hey, hey.
00:46:52You just took a wrong turn.
00:46:54That's the way to town.
00:46:55Yes, it was.
00:46:58Well, just turn around and go back.
00:47:02How come?
00:47:03How come?
00:47:04Because that's where I have to go.
00:47:05That's how come.
00:47:07Look, where do you think you're going anyway?
00:47:09My place.
00:47:11Well, the hell you are.
00:47:13Just turn this thing around and stop this truck.
00:47:25I was just going to get a couple of spares I got.
00:47:29I'll put them on your car for nothing.
00:47:32Now, why would you want to go to a mechanic
00:47:34when I'll go do it for nothing?
00:47:36He'll charge you an arm and a leg
00:47:38and I won't charge you nothing.
00:47:44Okay, but, uh, look, look.
00:47:47You're a nice guy and I like you,
00:47:50but just don't get any ideas.
00:47:52Just keep your hands to yourself, okay?
00:47:54Yes.
00:47:56Cross my heart.
00:48:28Would you like to come in?
00:48:31How long do you plan to be?
00:48:33Oh, just a minute or two.
00:48:36I'll wait here.
00:48:38Would you just hurry it up?
00:48:40Yes, ma'am.
00:49:03Oh, Christ, what a pain in the ass.
00:49:33What's going on?
00:49:39Oh, shit.

00:54:54I'm sorry I had to lock you in the closet, Mary.
00:55:02I'm fixing the place up a bit.
00:55:06Getting everybody ready to meet you.
00:55:10They're real happy.
00:55:13They think you're a fine girl.
00:55:20And they think you'll make me a real fine wife.
00:55:32Mary?
00:55:36They want to meet you now.
00:55:49I'm sorry I had to ignore...
00:55:52take your clothes off.
00:55:54But I...
00:55:56I didn't want you to try and...
00:55:59I didn't want you to try and...
00:56:22Can you get up?
00:56:24Or...
00:56:26Do you want me to help you?
00:56:39Don't be afraid. Come on.
00:56:42I'm not going to hurt you.
00:56:45I'm strong.

00:57:40Won't you...
00:57:42sit down, please, ma'am?
00:57:45Excuse me.
00:57:54Mama, this is Mary Ransom.
00:58:00I think she likes you.
00:58:08Ain't nothing to be afraid of, Mary.
00:58:12Shoot.
00:58:14This is all the things we used to do.
00:58:17While the ladies here...
00:58:19they play bridge out on the porch.
00:58:26We laugh and eat.
00:58:30There's practical considerations too.
00:58:38They help me make things.
00:58:45See this?
00:58:57That ain't cat good.
00:59:15Part comes from right down here.
00:59:21The drum.
00:59:26That's a belly drum.
00:59:35I'm just trying to show you...
00:59:37I got talents too.
00:59:40I may not be handsome like some of them other fellas you meet up there, but...
00:59:48You know, ten to one says you feel a lot better if you eat something.
00:59:52I would eat.
00:59:54But I can't.
00:59:56How come?

01:00:09But if I untie you...
01:00:12you'll...
01:00:14you'll try something.
01:00:16No, I won't.
01:00:19I promise.
01:00:21Well...
01:00:26As that's not a very nice way to treat your bride...
01:00:30is it?
01:00:32As is it.
01:00:35Gosh.
01:00:38No, it...
01:00:40sure ain't.
01:01:08I really love you, Mary.
01:01:12I love you too, Es.
01:01:15I knew you did.
01:01:17I knew deep down you did.
01:01:20I'll do everything.
01:01:23You just...

01:01:27Just sleep.
01:01:30Call me when you want something.
01:01:45You'll always...
01:01:47be protected.

01:03:38No!
01:03:56The only clue left to the police in the disappearance of Mary Ransom...
01:04:00was her parked car with the two rear tires slashed.
01:04:03Hardly astonishing, then, that no one ever thought of Ezra Cobb...
01:04:06as a suspect in the barmaid's disappearance.
01:04:09If only they had.
01:04:11Well, well, well, well, well, well.
01:04:14Guess they ain't never gonna stop talking about that.
01:04:17Talking about what?
01:04:19That dang hool barmaid, that Mary-what's-her-name.
01:04:22Don't they know they ain't never gonna find that girl now?
01:04:26Missing like that for that long.
01:04:28I know better.
01:04:30She ain't missing.
01:04:32You got a theory too.
01:04:34She ain't missing.
01:04:36I got her.
01:04:38You got her?
01:04:40I got her.
01:04:42Ez, what do you mean, you got her?
01:04:44That was my place.
01:04:46Mama, Miss Johnson.
01:04:48A lot of others too.
01:04:50Ez, you cut out that kind of talk.
01:04:52I just didn't want you to worry about her, that's all.
01:04:55Well, I ain't worried about her.
01:04:57It's all right, Santy.
01:04:59There's nothing to worry about anyway if you had her, that's for dang sure.
01:05:02Well, you wouldn't know what to do with her sitting right down on your lap.
01:05:05Ez, you cut out that crazy talk.
01:05:07I was only joking.
01:05:09It ain't very funny.
01:05:11One of these days you're gonna get yourself locked up in a pokey.
01:05:13Hello, Dad. I'm home.
01:05:15Hi there, son. Afternoon, Sally.
01:05:17Hi, Mr. Kurtz.
01:05:19Hello, Ezra. Do you know Sally?

01:05:36Sorry, I can't do that either.
01:05:38Well, what am I gonna do?
01:05:40I mean, hunting season starts next week.
01:05:42Ez, what am I gonna do?
01:05:44I gotta buy myself some shells.
01:05:46I gotta get some traps. Gotta get a whole bunch of gear.
01:05:49Actually, I wish they didn't sell that stuff down there.
01:05:52I really don't like it.
01:05:54You don't like it? How come you don't like it?
01:05:56Well, you know, I just don't like the idea
01:05:58of shooting animals and trapping them and...
01:06:01Oh, Sally's soft-hearted.
01:06:04Ah, so is Ezra and Jez, huh?
01:06:07I guess so.
01:06:09You know, honey, we didn't shoot them.
01:06:11They just starved to death.
01:06:13Gotta keep that balance, you know?
01:06:15Don't you worry about them deer, sir. They don't feel nothing.
01:06:17I'll never believe that.
01:06:19All right, let them get going.

01:06:25Bye-bye.

01:07:26Do I get my change,
01:07:28or do I have to pay for that, too?

01:21:24Entrance within demanding
01:21:30Whose is the voice I hear?
01:21:36Sweetly the tongues are calling
01:21:43Open the door for me
01:22:14Several nights later, a group of townspeople,
01:22:16reportedly led by Harlan Coates,
01:22:18under cover of night,
01:22:20burned the Cobb farm to the ground.
