Polls have closed and votes are now being tallied in three state by-elections. While the Liberals look set to retain both Epping and Hornsby, a "teal" independent is hoping to wrest control in Pittwater - and the result's likely to go down to the wire.

00:00The last state election was just over 18 months ago.
00:06Now voters are back at the ballot box.
00:08It's very annoying.
00:09Roll up, roll up, come get your sausages.
00:13Candidates have been grilled by voters for weeks.
00:15But Judgment Day came with family support for Teal independent Jackie Scrooby in Pittwater.
00:21Bit of good luck.
00:22Maybe we didn't do this last time.
00:23She fell just 606 votes short of defeating the Liberals last year, so every ballot counts,
00:30even her own.
00:31Yay!
00:32I think they're seeking representation that's not focused on party politics, but focused
00:37on people and communities.
00:39The young Liberals were on the ground in Pittwater supporting their candidate Georgia Ryburn,
00:44who's hoping to maintain her party's hold on the seat after the resignation of Rory
00:48Amon.
00:49We know that an independent on the crossbench won't stop Labor's cuts to our community,
00:54and that's why it's so important to vote Liberal.
00:56I'm nervous.
00:57I'm nervous it'll come down to the wire.
00:59In Epping, Monica Tudhope looks set to fill the seat vacated by former Premier Dominic
01:03Perrottet and her father Damian before that.
01:06I'm a young mum with a professional background, so I bring my own life experience and I hope
01:11I can bring that experience to the people of Epping.
01:14While in Hornsby, lawyer James Wallace is in prime position to replace former Treasurer
01:18Matt Keane.
01:19I've really decided that this is an opportunity where I can stand and represent a community
01:24I love, and I can hopefully make a good impact for people and young families in particular.
01:30Labor's not running in any of these by-elections.
01:32The Premier says his party's never won in these seats anyway, and if they did put up
01:36candidates there could well be a swing against Labor, which the Premier says would be a massive
01:40distraction.
01:41But he's scripted.
01:42He's run away from the fight.
01:44Instead it's the Liberal brand at stake, with more of the northern beaches considering
01:49turning teal.
