Herald football writer James Gardiner preview Rd 1 Jets v City
Transcript
00:00Welcome to Macdonald Jones Stadium ahead of the Newcastle Jets' season opener against
00:05Melbourne City.
00:06James Gardiner here from the Newcastle Herald.
00:07Some big news out of the Newcastle Jets' dressing rooms ahead of team selection.
00:11Two big outs.
00:12Lachie Rose, the new striker, he's out with a groin injury and Callum Timmons has a rib
00:17problem.
00:18So both of those out of the starting line-up.
00:19The other big news is the 17-year-old scholarship player and homegrown product, Will Dobson,
00:24is on the bench.
00:25If Will gets on the field, he will be the fourth youngest Jet of all time to play in
00:28the A-League.
00:29Now big news is Lachie Rose out of the starting line-up and Callum Timmons, so who will start
00:35up front?
00:36It will be Justin Vittich who will come in for Lachie Rose.
00:39He will partner the new Brazilian, Wallace Soule.
00:41The midfielder has also had a bit of a reshape.
00:43Costa Grosso will captain and Lachie Bayliss will play beside him in the middle of the
00:47park.
00:48And then as the two number 10s, it will be Eli Adams making his A-League debut for the
00:52Jets and Thomas Aquilina.
00:54At the back, Ryan Scott in goals, Daniel Willenbring on the left, the two centre-backs Alex Shushny
00:59and Mark Natter and Dane Ingham on the right.
01:02Conditions here are pretty good for Round 1.
01:04There is a bit of a cyclone that is expected to hit right on kick-off time, which will
01:09obviously make life difficult, particularly running into that breeze.
01:13Melbourne City are without a couple of their big guns, but I also think it's a fantastic
01:17opening day.
01:18There's going to be a flyover at 5 o'clock by Arrath Airport and the Jets' new owners
01:22from Maverick Sports Group will also be in attendance.
01:24The scene is set for a magnificent opener.
01:26Let's hope the Jets can get one up.
01:27And of course, for all the post-game reaction and match report, go to www.theNewcastleHerald.com
01:33after full-time.
