The Outdoor Boys spent 5 weeks touring North America and Asia. This is Part 12 of our travel log. We are camping in Chilliwack lake provincial park and we meet up with Frasier River Sturgeon Fishing Guide Steve Kaye to catch massive giant white sturgeon. After two days of epic fishing on the Frasier River we break camp and travel west to meet the rest of the family in Vancouver and then we travel to Seattle Washington and Birch Bay where we explore the tide pools and pick blackberries. Finally about 5 weeks on the road we returned home.

00:00All right, it's 610, we're out of the campsite, we've got everything but the tent put away,
00:29if they steal the tent, who cares. Wish me luck, no we will not let them go, let them go.
00:40All right, all right guys, 7 20 in the morning, we are going sturgeon fishing.
00:49All right guys, we're here with fishing guide Steve K with sturgeonhunters.com
00:54and we are going to go get some bait fish first
00:57and we're going to climb the food chain here and this will be fun.
01:10Right now we're not allowed to fish, this is the Harrison River we're going into
01:16and it's a real chore to get it back. Look at this spot, this is beautiful folks. What we're
01:22doing is we're cruising around and we're looking for these little fish, about a 10 inch fish
01:28called northern pike minnow, formerly referred to as a squaw fish.
01:31We're going to catch some bait and once we got some bait then we go sturgeon fishing. Excellent.
01:40That is a northern pike minnow aka squaw fish. Absolutely. All right, there we go,
01:48northern pike minnow. See there, abundance.
01:52Whoa, look at that. Nice job. There you go Tommy got a northern pike minnow,
01:55you want to catch a sturgeon with him? Yeah.
01:59Check it out right there, they're just popping all over the place.
02:08Beautiful little fish. Yeah, cool.
02:11Don't need a reel anymore. Oh, that's a big one. Look at that, good job, look at him.
02:16Well, we got about 20 or 30 of these northern pike minnow caught up, so we have got bait for
02:21two days and now we're gonna go get ourselves some sturgeon. Tommy and Nate are well entertained
02:27though. Show me your crazy dance guys. Basically a live bait rig, they're just not hot.
02:46Just add a little salmon here to the mix. A little sockeye? A little sockeye salmon.
02:52Sturgeon have good taste. Okay guys, we just saw two more jump, a little one and like a six foot
02:57plus sturgeon jump out of the water. It's like I'm on a whale watching tour. This is, this is
03:02insane. I'm just, I'm getting so pumped. Ready? Ready? Strike, strike, strike. Guys sit down.
03:11This one, I'm sorry. Reel, reel, reel, reel, reel, reel, reel, reel, reel, reel, reel, reel, reel,
03:16reel through the dive. You gotta, it's not like tarpon, you don't bow to them, you reel through.
03:27And when he goes from side to side, do it with a low rod position.
03:31That's it, just hang on to him here. It's a dinosaur. We're catching a dinosaur. What do you
03:37think? They're thrilled.
03:43Oh, here it comes.
03:48Yeah, it's a big fish.
03:54Whoa, that's a monster.
04:00That's uh, that's high fives. Probably just a touch under six foot. That's a hundred pound
04:09fish right there. Sweet. That's what we call a good start. He's got another hook in him.
04:16Yeah, he does. Yeah, he does. Where others have failed, we succeeded.
04:23Oh, this is awesome. This is awesome guys. All right, should we let him go? Yeah, he's good to
04:28go. Just turn him sideways. He'll swim away. Thank you very much. That's a start. That's a
04:35great fish. My back's tired. I'm an old man, an old fat man. Just another gorgeous spot. I don't
04:43think there's too many ugly spots in this part of the river. Look what I found. Aviva puffs. Give
04:48that a shot. It's like a girl scout cookie and a peep had a baby. Is bumblebee in the bait bucket?
04:58I can't believe myself.
05:06Guys, sit down. Sit down. Sit down. Sit down. Sit down. Sit down. Sit down. Sit down. Sit down.
05:08He used his spot, Tom. Thank you.
05:11Thank you guys.
05:25We got to measure that thing. Yeah, we do.
05:29102 inches. That is eight foot six. Eight and a half feet. Holy mackerel.
05:48That is eight and a half feet of sturgeon.
05:52Eight and a half foot. Probably 325 to 350 pounds.
06:10Here he comes.
06:12Here he comes.
06:20There you go. It's turning into the current.
06:28Eight and a half feet, man. That was awesome.
06:35That was fun. That is good.
06:43Tommy is celebrating with some bubbles here. All right, we're here in another beautiful spot
06:49and not too far from the shore here. Just got a drop off here. We're working.
07:06No, we're not going to eat them.
07:13Wow. You're going to get fish slapped, Tom. This guy will slap you. Careful, he's sharp.
07:18See these things here? These will cut you. Those are called scoots. Want to touch them?
07:26Go ahead and touch them. Touch them quick. Check this out. Watch this.
07:35See how that mouth comes out?
07:37See this? There's no teeth in there at all. You put your hand right in his mouth.
07:42You touch his tongue. Want to touch his tongue? Feel how hard this is. Feel how hard that is.
07:47That's solid cartilage. Go on in.
07:56Oh, was that cool, guys? That was way cool.
08:02Right around five feet. Probably like four or five. Well, we've caught three awesome sturgeon,
08:08two around five feet and one at eight and a half feet. That's what I call a full day,
08:13but we have utterly destroyed Steve's boat here. I think it's got all sorts of chocolate
08:20and dirty diapers and who knows what else. We'll have to clean this up really well,
08:27but we're going to call it a day today.
08:32It just so happens that I have some sturgeon caviar right here. This little can right here
08:39was 96 Canadian dollars and we're going to try it. I've eaten a lot of fish eggs. I've eaten
08:46flying fish eggs, cod eggs, salmon eggs. I've never eaten sturgeon eggs though, so this is
08:52going to be a first for me. We're going to try this out. So that's the farm, sturgeon?
08:56Yeah, there's one land-based fish farm that raises white sturgeon. They're originally
09:02from Fraser River stock. They started probably about 15 years ago, 15, 16 years ago. 13 years
09:09before they had got big enough to get a crop. See if I could even get this jar open. Oh,
09:15looks kind of like poppy seeds or something. Hey, Tommy, you want to try some of this?
09:21And Tommy agrees with you. Good call. Oh, there's about $20 worth right now. At least 20 bucks,
09:31maybe 25. Here we go. It's not a strong flavor to salmon. Salmon eggs, I don't like them.
09:46Um, they're like a little overpowering for me. This is one heck of a way to celebrate my, uh,
09:54my eight and a half foot white sturgeon by eating its babies. A little fishy, but not bad.
10:02All right, I'm going to wash the can off. I think I want to keep it. It'd be perfect for
10:06holding little bits of fishing tackle. Well, thanks very much. Well, it was fun. I will see
10:10you tomorrow morning. Same bad time, same bad place. You betcha. See if we can get a bigger one.
10:15All right, we'll do it. Well, let's go back, get some real food and Chilliwack, and then we'll,
10:19uh, head back to the camp and maybe we'll go swimming. Are you ready to go swimming?
10:24All right, let's do it. All right, guys, this is a cool, you want to go swimming?
10:35Oh, take your boots off. Take your boots off.
10:39If you guys will go in and start swimming around, I'll join you.
10:42I'm not going to wait with you. I'm not going in. I'm waiting right here unless you guys go
10:47swimming. I think the only way we're going swimming is if one of them falls in and gets wet.
10:55Guys, do you just want me to drag you into the water? Yeah. Okay.
11:03Okay, I don't want to. Make him swimming.
11:05I'm done. You guys don't want to swim? You just did it. That's the worst part.
11:15What's the matter? I gotcha. You're holding on to me. You're touching the bottom. Are you having fun?
11:24You know, it's a good outing when it ends with the boys saying mama under their breath all the time.
11:30Mama, mama, mama, mama, mama.
11:33On our way here to the campsite, we found a lady that was selling fresh raspberries
11:36and fresh nectarines, and they've been really good. You want one, bud?
11:43Well, it's still pretty light outside, and the boys are still pretty wired, so we're going to
11:48watch a movie together on the Kindles, and hopefully by the time we're done, it'll be a
11:54little bit darker, and everyone will be a little bit asleep. Sure, this kind of goes against the
11:58spirit of camping, but if I can't have a campfire, darn it. Might as well watch a movie.
12:14We're awake, up and out of our camp before 6 a.m. Well, here we are. It's another beautiful morning,
12:22and we're ready for day two of sturgeon fishing here on the Fraser River. That little Nathan's
12:26so cute. What am I going to do when he grows up? Well, guys, we still have bait left over from
12:30yesterday, and our guide met a dude in the back alley who hooked him up with a couple grams of
12:36sockeye, so we're going to take our eight ball of sockeye and our other bait, and we're going to get
12:44right to it today, so we'll see what happens. I'm not sure how on earth we could possibly top
12:50yesterday, but the Fraser River can do it in a heartbeat if it wants to, so we'll see what happens.
12:57That's amazing.
13:03Tommy, you want to catch a big sturgeon today? I'm hoping I can catch the sturgeon that ate kids.
13:11Those are one, two, three, four, five, six. Look at the size of that one. Seven. The sonar has been blowing up
13:18lots of good marks on here, so we're going to give it a go, let it hit for about 30 minutes or so,
13:24see what we get. If we like what we see, great. If not, we'll move on.
13:31I saw it going over, then you're in the way, I walk around, around you.
13:38This one's not a ripper or a jumper, he's just a sulker. He's got his head down and he's putting
13:43weight to it. Hold that rod nice and high for me.
13:53Nice six footer. All right, I'm going to roll him over and let him go here.
14:02Whoa, he just about slapped you. Yeah, that's nice. Oh, that warms you up, doesn't it? We got that
14:10strike when I was in the middle of putting jammies on Tom, he was complaining about being
14:15cold. Right in the middle of it, the worst time possible, Rod goes tap, tap,
14:20and Tommy goes flying through the air like a discarded article of clothing. He took it pretty
14:26well though, but he seems no worse for the wear. That seemed to have warmed him up. Well, we got
14:32one fish out of that hole, but nothing much happened after that, so we're moving spots.
14:40Pick up the rod, pick up the rod. Gently, just absorb it.
15:02That's what he really weighs. Oh, he's substantial.
15:10This fish has more runs than a man who drinks Mexican tap water.
15:35We're going to need a bigger boat.
15:40If he's not longer, he's happy. Yeah. Oh, he put up a strong fight.
15:48On the body line? Right on the fork. Call him 8-2. 8-2. Just kneel,
15:53get right in the water, get as far back as possible. Thumbs up.
16:02Look at this. This thing is massive. Yeah, another 300 pound plus fish.
16:08Oh, look at that. Yeah, look at my hand. It just keeps going.
16:16I want to pet the dinosaur. Pet the dinosaur. There you go.
16:22How else are you going to get a chance to pet a dinosaur?
16:25There you go. Look at that. We go fossil hunting there at our house and we find
16:29fossilized sturgeon scutes every once in a while. Is that right, eh? Yeah.
16:33Am I heavy? Not compared to this guy.
16:38What I like to do is just sort of hold him in the current a little bit.
16:45Just let him feel that current for a little bit. Give her a push in the current. She should
16:49probably take off now. There she goes. There she goes. Yeah, that's what we want to see. Right
16:56there. All right. Good release. That was awesome. Awesome. Look, Tommy, I wet my pants.
17:06Guys, I feel selfish. I feel selfish. How many people never in their life get to see or catch
17:12an eight foot sturgeon? I'm gonna do it twice, man. That's old Steve here. He wasn't joking
17:19when he says he knows how to catch the big boys. That's a good fish. That's a good fish.
17:24That thing was stronger, I think, than the other one. Maybe it didn't tire itself out as much with
17:27the jumping, but that put the hurt on me a lot more than that first one. So Steve just told me
17:34that that sturgeon right there, the one we just landed, was the 50th fish they've caught this
17:39year. It was eight feet or longer. That's insane, guys. This is an amazing, amazing fishery.
17:47All right, here he comes. He doesn't quite want to stay on top. There he is.
18:07Got to let him go. He's ready to go.
18:24About a six footer? Yeah, he goes six. All right. Good jumper, good runner. That was fun.
18:38Ah, he pulled it off, I'll bet you.
18:57Keep it high up in the air, Daddy. Keep your rod high up in the air.
19:07Oh, look at that. He's eyeballing you, Tom. He's looking at you.
19:22Yeah, he's wondering what's going on in my mouth. I feel something down there.
19:31Watching these sturgeon jump when you got them on the hook, it's like watching shark.
19:35It's awesome, guys. It really is awesome. These guys just sitting there, being heavy.
19:47You need help? Oh, that helps, Tom. Thank you. All right, Tom, you got me. Don't let me fall in.
20:05All right, Tommy, I got him. That one's about five feet. Yeah, he's about five foot.
20:22We caught three fish yesterday, two five footers and the eight and a half footer.
20:27Today, we caught three six footers, a five footer and an eight footer. So, if my math serves me
20:33correctly, that's forty nine feet of sturgeon in two days. That's amazing. Come here, fight sturgeon
20:41in the Frazier River. There's nothing like it. And if you guys want, I'll put a lot more information.
20:47The Steve Kales Guide Service, sturgeonhunter.com. I'll put it in the description if you guys want
20:52to see more information. All right, Steve. Hey, thanks again. The pleasure. Looking forward to
20:57seeing those videos. Awesome. All right, Nathan, head back to the car or I'm going to have to,
21:02I'm going to have to beat you with a stick. Run. I'm going to eat you.
21:10Oh, Nathan, you better catch up with Tommy. I'm coming for you. My back is sore. Reeling in eight
21:16sturgeon in two days. It's a lot of work. What would you like to do our last day here before
21:22we go see mom? Would you like to go out to a movie together? Yeah. Well, maybe we should do that.
21:27Have either of you guys ever been to a movie before? No. No, I don't think you have. But I
21:32don't think you've ever been. I don't think you know what 3D is. Grab one of these special glasses.
21:37All right, let's go into a movie. Are you excited for a 3D movie?
21:47Well, guys, what did you think of your first movie?
21:52Tommy, where are your shoes, bud? You're gone. Where'd they go? That kid can't keep his shoes
22:01on. Well, let's go back to the campsite. We're going to get a good night's rest. And then tomorrow
22:06we're driving back to Vancouver and we're going to see mommy and Jacob again. Are you guys excited?
22:31Yeah. But today we're weaving. What? All right, guys, you ready? Yeah. Let's go get mommy and Jacob.
22:52So we're at some random gas station in Vancouver filling up and this crow comes up and is like
22:58right in our business and like jumps up on the car. There's a raven on the car. That's so crazy.
23:10Oh, you smell so much better than I do. Oh, yes, you do. Yay, the family's all back together.
23:18All right, so we got the crew loaded up. We're going to head to the U.S. border and we've got
23:22to find some place to stay tonight. We have the rest of today and most of tomorrow free.
23:28And we just we haven't planned anything. We haven't booked anything. We're just playing it by ear.
23:32Well, we got a little time to kill and we blew through customs so smoothly. We're going to go
23:38and check out Birch Bay State Park here in Washington State.
23:52I think we're going to grab some food. Are you hungry, Tom? I'm hungry.
23:56We got a huckleberry soda here and a honey cream. Peggy, you got any preferences?
24:05Daddy got himself his own pizza. To the car. All right, babe. So we got Maui Waui,
24:13which is like passion fruit mango guava. We got fruity pop rocks and almond pistachio.
24:22Well, guys, should we go find a pretty spot on the beach? Go walk the beach a little bit?
24:26Let's go to the beach. Oh, look at those. These wild blackberries. Yeah.
24:34Oh, nice little blackberry. Is that good? Oh, that is a good one. Should we go to the beach?
24:40Yeah. Oh, look at all these blackberry bushes. Oh, look at a ton of them.
24:48Mmm. They got rose hips over there. Look at this. Look at the size. This whole wall is just
24:56blackberries. Look at this beach, guys. This is awesome. We just kind of stumbled upon this.
25:03This is gorgeous. Becca, I found you a clam shell. Now, do you know how to look for live clams,
25:14not just dead ones? You look for holes in the sand. See right here. See this hole?
25:19See that hole? There's a clam in there. Oh, there he is. See him? Can you see him?
25:28Oh, it's a crab. You found a little crab. Yeah. Oh, hold on while you're there.
25:32Oh, it's a crab, crab, crab. I got that. You got it. Oh, look what I found.
25:37This one's alive. Look at this. Look what I found. Oh, there's thousands of them.
25:46Oh, look at this. It's like an earwig, but of the ocean. Ready? Oh, look at that. There's a
25:54red one. Look at all the crabs. Oh, I'm going to count. But guess what? Under the rock I found,
26:02like a million. Whoa, a hair break. Look how big it is. That crab must have been as big as your
26:09guys' heads. I got a bunch of crabs. I got one. I got one. You got it. I'm going to put one on
26:19Tommy's head. There's a crab down your shirt. Here, come here, Tom. Here, check this out.
26:26This is a mussel. That's a shellfish called a mussel. When they get bigger, you can eat them.
26:34Oh, look, look what you found. A centipede. No, that's not a centipede. That's a sandworm.
26:40Look at the seaweed. See right here? Here it goes. Pop, pop. There's a clam.
26:46There's a crab inside it. Well, guys, I'm having a ball on this beach and the boys are too.
26:52Finding all the little critters and clams and stuff.
27:00That's a sand dollar. Look, there's fur underneath it. And it's like little legs.
27:05Look at that. Sand dollar, see? Hey, Daddy, this is a clam for you. Oh, thanks, buddy.
27:13It's pushing 430 and we need to get into a hotel and get these boys showered. I haven't had a
27:24shower in more days than I like to admit. These boys need to get to bed at a reasonable time for
27:30once. I think Tommy just discovered that walking barefoot on barnacle covered rocks really hurts.
27:38It's being a trooper about it, though.
27:44Oh, you got to carry him back.
27:48Last hotel stay of the trip. Here at the Holiday Inn Express here in, uh,
27:54someplace in Washington. I forgot. We better get you in some swimming trunks, shouldn't we?
27:58Doesn't matter where in the world you go or how much money you spend.
28:02The part the kids enjoy the most is playing in the pool.
28:13One, two, three.
28:19Whoo! One, two, three.
28:38Well, good morning, folks, and welcome to the last day of our month-long trip.
28:43So this is what a hotel room looks like after just one night. Yep.
28:50When we left our home in Virginia, it was June, and it is now August, and we've caught fish all
28:56over Utah, and we've traveled to Japan and seen and done wonderful things. We've shot machine guns
29:04in Las Vegas and raced Lamborghinis. Now we're headed home, but we've had a good trip. Isn't
29:10that right, guys? Yeah. Yep. Yep. Seven pieces of checked luggage, two strollers, and about four
29:17carry-ons. To simply check my rearview mirror. Oh, yeah, there's nothing there. It's been a fun
29:22month, hasn't it? I'm so tired. Love you, baby. You ready, Jacob? Let's go home.
29:39The house isn't burned down. That's good. We are home. It's about 2.30 in the morning,
29:45and it feels good to be home. Hopefully, you guys have enjoyed coming along for the ride,
