00:00You know, I like to think of them more as our heroes.
00:03Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're counting down our picks
00:07for Hailee Steinfeld's most recognizable roles,
00:10in contrast with those that are generally less remembered.
00:14I have come to take you back to Fort Smith.
00:18Number 5.
00:19That Was Her When Marnie Was There
00:21Hailee Steinfeld has done her fair share of voice acting over the years,
00:25but the English dub of this Studio Ghibli film
00:28was her first foray into the world of animation.
00:31In my dreams, I saw a girl just like you.
00:35Dreams.
00:37She plays Anna Sasaki, a shy 12-year-old who spends the summer away
00:42and begins to learn more about herself and her background
00:45after meeting a girl named Marnie.
00:47It's quite a different role from the eccentricity and comedy
00:50we've come to know Steinfeld for,
00:52but she embodies Anna's quiet and restrained nature
00:56in this really wonderful, down-to-earth way.
00:58Excuse me, anybody home?
01:00Although it's a pretty unexpected casting choice in hindsight,
01:04it's one that just works.
01:05Feels wonderful.
01:08Number 5.
01:09Stole The Show
01:10Spider-Verse Saga
01:12Hey guys.
01:13Gwanda?
01:14It's Gwyn, actually.
01:15Oh, you know her. Very cool.
01:19I'm from another dimension.
01:20I mean, another, another dimension.
01:23Here's one of her voice roles that isn't so unknown.
01:26As Gwen Stacy, Steinfeld is quippy, full of energy, and a force to be reckoned with.
01:32Shoot, shoot, I have to go.
01:34Really?
01:34Yeah, I forgot to get my steps in.
01:37Really, really wish I could stay longer.
01:39I'm sorry.
01:41Goodbye.
01:42The trilogy takes its time developing Gwen and her relationship with Miles
01:46as it changes and strengthens.
01:48There's a depth there that Steinfeld manages to bring to the forefront
01:52with delivery that is consistently on point,
01:55and even the quality of her voice alone feels fitting for the hero.
01:59All right, people.
02:00Let's start at the beginning one last time.
02:02My name is Gwen Stacy.
02:03I was bitten by a radioactive spider.
02:06And for the last two years, I've been the one and only Spider-Woman.
02:11It's no wonder then that this isn't the only time she gets to play a hero,
02:15but we're getting ahead of ourselves.
02:17Number 4.
02:18That Was Her
02:19The Keeping Room
02:20Why is it so hard when the only thing there is you and a rabbit?
02:25Taking place during the American Civil War,
02:27The Keeping Room follows two sisters and a servant
02:30as they fight for their survival and their home.
02:33Fair warning if you've never seen this one,
02:35it's not the easiest watch,
02:37and we don't find ourselves sympathizing with oppressors for protagonists.
02:41Can I stop?
02:44He's all gone with you.
02:45I was asking my sister.
02:50Despite this, Steinfeld excels at evoking
02:53all the emotion and complexity that the setting demands,
02:56as well as that resulting from the distress these characters face.
03:00But she always...
03:04You killed her.
03:07Right?
03:08The Western drama genre is not one we would have imagined
03:12Haley Steinfeld readily fitting into,
03:14but she does so with grace and nuance.
03:17Number 4.
03:18Stole The Show
03:19Bumblebee
03:20You know, there's a whole chapter in here about
03:22how people who smile more often actually have more friends.
03:27It's unbelievable.
03:28Steinfeld's Charlie Watson is a lot of fun,
03:31and a good match for all the action and heart of the Transformers franchise.
03:35Despite Charlie's goofiness and juvenility,
03:38Steinfeld masterfully lets the weight of the teen's grief
03:42simmer just beneath the surface in a lot of scenes.
03:45If I could just get it to start up again,
03:50he would hear me.
03:51We also have to commend her performance,
03:53considering how often in the movie her only co-star is an Autobot.
03:57It's especially noteworthy how the actress manages
04:00to turn any moments that might be cloying on the page
04:03into natural flowing interactions.
04:05What have you done?
04:07What were you thinking?
04:08What?
04:10I told you to hide in the garage.
04:12It makes the film that much more enjoyable overall.
04:15Number 3.
04:16That Was Her
04:17Ender's Game
04:18This is one of those movies you'll finally get around to watching
04:21way after its release,
04:23only to find that you recognize pretty much every actor on screen.
04:27In Hailee Steinfeld's case,
04:29it's a bit of a shock to see her look so much younger.
04:31Supposed to report to Bonds on Madrid.
04:33So you're the replacement?
04:35Ender Wiggin.
04:36Petra Arkanian.
04:37Only girl in the Salamander Army with more balls than anybody else in this bunker.
04:41You might have been equally shocked to spot Sex Education's Asa Butterfield alongside her,
04:46but we digress.
04:47We will drill a hole through the swarm.
04:49Petra, you'll only get a second.
04:51That's all I need.
04:51In this military science fiction film,
04:54we're taken far into the future and far into space
04:57for a story about leadership, war, and morality.
05:01Steinfeld portrays Petra Arkanian,
05:04a student and commander who takes the protagonist under her wing.
05:07It's a unique choice for her,
05:09but she embodies the part well nonetheless.
05:12Where'd you learn all this?
05:14I had a brother.
05:15Had?
05:16Had.
05:16Number three.
05:17Stole the show.
05:18Hawkeye.
05:19Nice to see you again, Katie.
05:24That was in your mouth.
05:25As one of the first characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe
05:28to take on the mantle from a major player,
05:30there was a lot of pressure.
05:32Kate Bishop had to be likable and strong,
05:35and also share some of Clint Barton's qualities
05:38while still being her own person.
05:40Oh my God, you're... you're Archer.
05:43Hawkeye.
05:44Clint.
05:44It's the branding issue, I'm telling you.
05:46Yeah, sure.
05:47A lot of this is down to the writing, sure,
05:49but the actor makes or breaks the character in the end.
05:52Luckily, Steinfeld brought personality by the bucketload to Kate Bishop
05:56and made her someone we want to root for,
05:58even if it means saying goodbye to an old friend.
06:01Why would I ever want to use a boomerang arrow?
06:04Because they come back.
06:06Exactly.
06:07Yeah, well, if all trick arrows were boomerangs,
06:10then we'd have them all.
06:12Coming back at us.
06:13He'd have to... he'd have to dodge.
06:16Number two.
06:17That was her true grit.
06:19For having been just 13 years old here,
06:22Steinfeld knocks it out of the park.
06:24Could I hire a marshal to pursue Tom Chaney?
06:26You have a lot of experience with bounty hunters, do you?
06:29That is a silly question.
06:30I am here to settle my father's affairs.
06:32She's more than believable as Maddie,
06:34a headstrong farm girl who teams up with the dodgy rooster Cogburn
06:38to seek revenge on the man who killed her father.
06:40Since this was Steinfeld's theatrical film debut,
06:43you're forgiven if you forgot she starred in this one.
06:46She strikes a spectacular balance between steadfast precociousness
06:50and the endearing awkwardness that stems from Maddie's age,
06:54which is a really impressive line to toe.
06:56There's a posse of officers up there who will force you to go.
06:59Well that is interesting news.
07:01And how many is up there?
07:03Right around 50.
07:04Even if you're not into westerns,
07:05Steinfeld's performance is a must-see.
07:08Well, perhaps we could double back over our tracks
07:11and confuse the trail in a clever way.
07:13Number two.
07:14Stole the show.
07:15The Edge of Seventeen.
07:16Maybe nobody likes you.
07:22Nadine's got problems.
07:24She's not the most admirable character,
07:26but she's not supposed to be.
07:28Steinfeld portrays her with almost too much authenticity.
07:32There's nothing sugar-coated about this girl.
07:34You're bald, and you know what?
07:35You know why you're not married?
07:36Because bald men are gross, and they're disgusting,
07:39and especially the ones that make $45,000 a year.
07:41She's insecure, makes bad choices,
07:44and generally believes the world is out to get her.
07:46She's also a love letter to adolescents.
07:49We can't help but see the realistic decision-making from a 17-year-old
07:53who's lost the two people in her life keeping her afloat.
07:56Steinfeld brings humor, angst, and her special brand of sincerity,
08:00making Nadine a lot more digestible and relatable
08:03than she might have been otherwise.
08:05I didn't mean, like, completely bald, by the way.
08:10It's smart what you do there, too.
08:11You kind of, you know, I don't know.
08:14Do you poof it up a little bit?
08:17Give a little zhuzh?

08:34Number 1. That Was Her, Arkane
08:37While fans of the show will probably be able to list all the voice actors
08:40off the top of their heads,
08:42first-time viewers likely won't recognize Steinfeld as Vi on the first watch.
08:47Vi is rough around the edges, much like some of Steinfeld's other characters.
08:52But she's also a total badass with too much resolve for her own good.
08:56"-Powder, you're stronger than you think.
09:00And one day, this city's gonna respect us."
09:04This is a girl who's been to prison after all.
09:07She's resilient from the burden of tragedy beyond her years
09:10and the weight of having to grow up too fast.
09:13"-We were here. We saw what they did.
09:16I grew up knowing I'm less than them.
09:20That my place is down there.
09:23I want Powder to have more than that, and I'm willing to fight for it."
09:27Steinfeld brings all of that to life beautifully,
09:30but also seems to soften her hard edges with an undeniable likability in her line delivery.
09:35"-Your problem is never knowing when to shut up.
09:37But I'm gonna help you with that. Ready?
09:39You see this look on my face?
09:41This will always mean it's time to shut up.
09:44But I..."
09:45Number 1. Stole the Show. Dickinson.
09:49As Emily Dickinson herself,
09:50the actress shines brighter than the glow of the moon and all the stars.
09:55Sorry, we'll leave the poetic lines to Dickinson.
09:57But the point still stands.
09:59Steinfeld summons warmth and realness in her portrayal of the Victorian-era poet.
10:04"-I never imagined how heavy it could be.
10:10How heavy it could be.
10:13And the whole time I've known you, you've been carrying that weight."
10:16The latter was known for not quite fitting the mold of what was expected for Victorian women.
10:21And who better to depict this whimsicality than Haley Steinfeld?
10:25"-Flap past it.
10:28Flap past it to the farmer's corn.
10:31Then eat of it and die."
10:33The humor and frankness she brings to this sapphic narrative have been widely praised,
10:38as has the entire series.
10:40If you haven't gotten around to this one yet, it's well worth the watch.
10:44"-I'll be there in a minute.
10:45You said that an hour ago.
10:46Cool. Yeah, it's just I don't know what kind of ghost etiquette I might be violating."
10:50What's your favorite Haley Steinfeld role? Let us know in the comments.
10:54"-You came in second.
10:56Yes, exactly. Nothing like that can happen again, understand?"
10:59Do you agree with our picks?
