00:00The death yesterday in Gaza of the mastermind of the slaughter of 1,200 Israelis in October
00:06last year highlights the need for political settlement between Israel and the Palestinians
00:11and to call for an immediate ceasefire.
00:14But then Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says the war is far from over, pushing back
00:20on the Biden administration's call to end the war and release the hostages.
00:24VOA's White House correspondent Patsy Widogoswara tells us more.
00:31For years, as Hamas' top leader in Gaza, Yahya Sinwar built up the militant group's
00:36military capabilities.
00:39Since the U.S.-designated terror group's attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, Sinwar has been
00:45hiding in tunnels like this one.
00:48But on Thursday, Israel said they killed Sinwar in an operation in south Gaza.
00:53They released a video showing what they said was his final moments.
00:56To the people of Gaza, I have a simple message.
01:00This war can end tomorrow.
01:02It can end if Hamas lays down its arms and returns our hostages.
01:08President Joe Biden was en route to Germany when the news broke.
01:11He called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to congratulate him on getting Sinwar.
01:15Now is the time to move on.
01:16Move on.
01:17Move forward and cease fire in Gaza.
01:18Make sure that we move in the direction that we're going to be in a position to make things
01:19better for the whole world.
01:28Israel's military campaign has targeted Hamas' leadership, but has also killed tens of thousands
01:33of Palestinian civilians.
01:35Biden's call to end the fighting was reiterated by his vice president, Kamala Harris.
01:39It must end such that Israel is secure.
01:44The hostages are released.
01:46The suffering in Gaza ends.
01:49And the Palestinian people can realize their right to dignity, security, freedom and self-determination.
01:59Families of Israeli hostages still held by Hamas say Sinwar's killing brings more urgency
02:04for a ceasefire deal.
02:06Their lives are in great danger now, more than ever.
02:10We're calling on the Israeli government and the U.S. administration to act swiftly and
02:15do whatever is needed to reach a deal with the captures.
02:19But despite increased pressure on the Netanyahu government, ending fighting in Gaza may not
02:23be Israel's main focus right now.
02:26Israel's focus and America's focus is in Lebanon because there's opened up an opportunity to
02:33weaken Hezbollah greatly.
02:36And this is something that all the American allies in the region, Saudi Arabia, Egypt,
02:43et cetera, are very interested in.
02:46Battered by a year of Israel's military campaign, Gazans say Sinwar's death will unlikely end
02:51the year-long war.
02:53As Israel hunts down Hamas militants, U.N. experts say over 1.8 million people, almost
02:5990 percent of Gaza's population, are experiencing crisis levels of hunger.
03:05The findings come after the Biden administration warned this week that U.S. military aid might
03:10be cut off unless Israel addresses the humanitarian needs in Gaza.
03:15Supplies were airdropped over Gaza Thursday.
03:18U.N. officials said aid has been critically low since Israel's renewed offensive in north
03:23Gaza cut off lifelines there.
