Im französischen Historiendrama Louise Violet von Éric Besnard (Birnenkuchen mit Lavendel) wird die titelgebende Lehrerin (Alexandra Lamy) im Jahr 1889 in die Provinz des Landes entsendet. Hier soll sie im Auftrag der Republik eine Schule gründen, die für alle Kinder kostenlos, aber auch verpflichtend zu besuchen ist. In dem Dorf, in dem sie diese Pläne umsetzen soll, stößt die Idee einer solchen Bildungseinrichtung allerdings auf wenig Gegenliebe – weder bei den Eltern noch bei ihren Kindern.
