The Pied Flycatcher is a small bird that you might spot in UK woodlands. These little fellows are about the size of a Robin, but they look quite different. The males are easy to spot with their black and white feathers, while the females are more brown.
These birds are clever hunters, catching flies and other insects right out of the air! They spend their winters in Africa but fly back to Europe in spring to have their babies. They like to nest in holes in trees, but they're happy to use nest boxes too.
Pied Flycatchers are known for their lovely song, which sounds a bit like a Robin's but shorter. Sadly, there aren't as many of these birds as there used to be. Climate change is making it harder for them to find food when they return from Africa. But don't worry, people are working hard to help protect these charming little birds.
