00:04Hey, how's it going? Dave2D here.
00:06So, Google's Pixel event just went down,
00:08and the notch is real.
00:10There was a part of me that just wanted to believe that this was somehow a big troll from Google,
00:14but it really looks like the notch is a thing.
00:16I found it strange, or almost humorous, that during the event,
00:19they did a lot of, like, camera techniques with the renders,
00:22and they used wallpapers to kind of disguise or kind of mask that notch, but it's there.
00:27I also think that in the software, you can't hide that notch like you can on other Android phones.
00:32Like, a lot of times you can just pull a black bar down,
00:34but I think this notch is so big that a black bar in that region would just look really weird,
00:39so I don't think you can actually hide that notch in software as of right now.
00:42The notch on the Pixel 3 XL is housing two selfie cameras,
00:45one of them being a wide-angle selfie.
00:47It's a 97-degree camera angle, which is actually wider than the wide-angle selfie on the LG V40,
00:53and it's housing one of the front-facing stereo speakers.
00:55So, there's reason for that notch to exist.
00:57As for whether or not it kind of makes the whole notch worth it really depends on the user.
01:01Personally, I'm not a big fan of notches,
01:04but this notch, despite it being so prominent, is somehow tolerable to me,
01:08just because of how many other good things are going on about this phone.
01:11So the big thing I love about this year's Pixel 3 is the design.
01:14Both the 3 and the 3 XL have a much more premium look to the phone
01:18than last year's Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL.
01:20I really like the colors this year.
01:22The white with the teal power button looks awesome,
01:24and the glass on the front and back make the device look a little more luxurious.
01:28That glass back allows it to have wireless charging, which we haven't seen on a Pixel device before.
01:33The most iconic feature of the Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL from last year was probably the camera.
01:38It's a camera that just held up really well over time.
01:41Even a year after this thing came out, it's still one of the best smartphone cameras on the market,
01:45and the Pixel 3 camera looks to be even better.
01:48Now, there's a whole bunch of new features on the Pixel 3 camera,
01:50but there's three that kind of stick out as being really impressive to me.
01:53The first one is kind of like their flagship feature.
01:55They're calling it Top Shot, and it's not something we haven't seen before.
01:58Like, it's basically taking a series of photos when you press the shutter,
02:01but using software, it'll choose and recommend one of those photos as being the best shot.
02:06So, if everyone's eyes are open or your mouth is smiling in a photo,
02:09it'll be like, this is the one they recommend.
02:11Now, if you don't like it, you can kind of choose between the other shots that were taken,
02:14but the fact that they have an automatically recommended version is pretty cool.
02:18The second feature I find interesting is something they're calling Super Res Zoom.
02:22So, it's basically a digital zoom, but they're using software to generate missing details.
02:27So, normally when you take a picture and you zoom in digitally, you lose pixel density,
02:31but Google uses an algorithm to generate detail again.
02:34It's basically like when CSI has the zoom and enhance, that's what this is doing.
02:40Now, the third feature that I think is really impressive is Night Shot,
02:43and they used a photo from the iPhone XS and the new Pixel 3 camera to kind of compare the two.
02:47As for whether the discrepancy is as pronounced as that
02:50is something I'll have to check out in my full review,
02:52but it looks promising because low-light photography, particularly nighttime photography,
02:56is something that a lot of smartphone cameras struggle with.
02:58Now, the pricing on this phone is not cheap.
03:01The Pixel 2 from last year launched at $650,
03:04the Pixel 3 starts at $800, which is a pretty significant step up in price.
03:08It's a higher quality phone with better materials, better build quality,
03:11and it's got more hardware features like wireless charging and stuff.
03:14Compared to the Pixel 2 XL from last year,
03:16this was a phone that had a great camera and was a good phone overall,
03:20but the build quality never felt particularly premium to me.
03:23It was always like a kind of slightly above average phone, but the overall package was good.
03:27This year, Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL are just a big step up in the overall package of the phone.
03:34Better build quality and everything.
03:35But that notch though, it's something that I think a lot of people have to get used to
03:39if they want to have the bigger screen.
03:41But what about you guys? Is that notch a deal-breaker?
03:43Like, I know a lot of you guys don't like notches, but I'm curious.
03:46You know what's in the phone now, you know it's a great phone, you know it has an awesome camera,
03:50but that notch, does it end the Pixel dream for you?
03:53Okay, talk to you guys in the next video. Thumbs if you liked it, subs if you loved it.
03:56See you guys next time.
