00:00As a tech reviewer, I think one of the more important things I have to do is to remain impartial.
00:05Not just to try different brands and try different products and stuff like that,
00:08but also to try to look at products and try to respect what the companies tried to do when they developed it.
00:15Like, no company's out there trying to make bad products.
00:17They're trying to make good stuff, but invariably, there are bad products.
00:21And right now, Apple's product lineup, particularly their computing products, is really pissing me off.
00:27Just as a bit of a backstory, before I started YouTube, I was an avid Apple user.
00:32I wasn't like an Apple fanboy or anything like that.
00:34I had a MacBook Air, I had an iPhone.
00:36I wasn't hard to the core, but I enjoyed the Apple ecosystem.
00:39But as I started making YouTube videos, I realized that I had to try things that I didn't prefer.
00:44I had to try Android phones, I had to try Windows PCs,
00:47I had to just use stuff that I didn't prefer using,
00:50just so I could actually have a better grasp of what was going on in the industry.
00:54And as my channel grew, I was exposed to more and more devices.
00:57I saw more computers, more phones,
00:59and a lot of the reasons that I enjoyed the Apple products were kind of verified by looking at other brands.
01:04Like, I enjoyed the build quality of Apple products,
01:07and even to this day, I still think Apple has the best-built laptops in the world right now.
01:13Like, no one beats them. They are literally the best-built laptops.
01:16But then you look at the inside, and you look at the internals and the specs and all the nitty-gritty stuff,
01:21and you look at how the industry has kind of shaped over the course of 2018,
01:24and you see how Apple has done their stuff over 2018,
01:27it just grinds my gears.
01:29I'm gonna take a look at the MacBook Pros first.
01:31The 13-inch and the 15-inch.
01:33And these are both the 2017 models.
01:35They're both running the 7th gen Intel processors.
01:38The 13-inch one is running a U processor, it's a weaker version,
01:41and the 15-inch model is running a H processor, which is a stronger version.
01:45But both of them are basically the strongest MacBook Pros that Apple sells right now.
01:50The problem is that the entire industry has shifted over to the 8th gen CPUs,
01:54and they are so much faster than the 7th gen CPUs.
01:57Now, a lot of the stuff that I deal with is more processor-intensive, like video editing and stuff,
02:02is not something that's light, so I understand that this won't affect most people,
02:06but, like, the entire industry has shifted over to 8th gen CPUs since, like, November of 2017.
02:13So, in November of last year, they could have upgraded the 13-inch model.
02:18They didn't, but they could have.
02:20And in April of this year, they could have upgraded the 15-inch model,
02:24because that's when, basically, all the Windows laptops out there
02:27were refreshing their devices to the 8th gen CPUs.
02:30These guys haven't done it, and it's punishing to the user base.
02:32If you're an Adobe user, and you're looking to buy a new computer,
02:35and you're looking at a MacBook Pro, you're wrong.
02:37That's the wrong device.
02:38You need to be buying a Windows laptop right now,
02:40because the difference in performance between a 7th gen and an 8th gen CPU,
02:44it's so big, and the entire user base is getting screwed.
02:48And you take a look at the stuff like the drives being soldered on,
02:50and being forced to purchase the Touch Bar, which most people don't find all that useful.
02:54It's just more stuff that Apple does that feels really aggressive for no particular reason.
02:58And I like macOS. I actually prefer using macOS much more than I prefer using Windows,
03:02but if I'm using their hardware right now,
03:04I'm forced to use dated hardware that feels significantly slower than Windows hardware.
03:09Now, I also want to take a look at the iMac Pros.
03:12These are devices that are really powerful.
03:14They're expensive, but they're really powerful.
03:16The thing is, you're forced once again to purchase a whole bunch of stuff that you may not need,
03:20like ECC memory, and Xeon processors, and a 5K panel.
03:24Like, they're all really good things.
03:26Well, some of it is.
03:27They're all good, but a lot of people don't need it,
03:29but they're forced to purchase it because they want that higher core count.
03:32And here's the thing.
03:33A lot of people don't even understand that the iMac Pro, like the 8 core, like the base model,
03:38the 8 core iMac Pro is actually slower than a 6 core laptop in Adobe Premiere.
03:44So, one of those new Windows laptops will render a video faster than the $5,000 machine that looks really beautiful,
03:49but isn't a good fit for most people who are actually considering it.
03:52Now, if you look at the iMac, like the regular iMac, they're actually in a weird spot.
03:56If they upgrade the iMac to the 8th gen CPUs, like the rest of the industry has,
04:01it'll be a lot cheaper than an iMac Pro, but the performance will be really similar.
04:04So, I don't know how Apple's going to handle that.
04:06I think if they come out with that new iMac, it's going to cannibalize the sales of their iMac Pros.
04:11Okay, the entire computer lineup right now, though, feels overpriced, underpowered,
04:15more so than the average Apple kind of price premium that we're used to paying
04:19because of that huge gap in performance from the 7th and the H9 CPUs.
04:24Okay, iPhones.
04:26I recently dropped my iPhone X.
04:27It was in a case and it was off a very normal coffee table.
04:30It got bumped off the edge, maybe like 18, 24 inches at most, and it cracked hard.
04:35And here's the thing.
04:36This is a $1,000 phone.
04:37I didn't get AppleCare on it.
04:38I kind of regret it, but it was a $1,000 phone.
04:41I'm not going to pay an extra $200.
04:43Like, that becomes a $1,200 phone.
04:45And when I tried to repair it, I was told that this is considered an out-of-warranty repair
04:48because it's accidental damage, and it's $550 US to repair that back panel.
04:55In their defense, not really defense, but the reason is that
04:59they have to replace the entire back and internals of the phone.
05:02Not the front glass and the whatever, but the internals have to all be swapped,
05:06including the back panel, and that's why it costs so much.
05:09That is crazy.
05:10For that money, for $550, you can buy a brand new OnePlus 6 and have $20 to spare.
05:15So I think for most people, common sense would dictate that this is not worth a $550 repair bill.
05:21It's fully functional.
05:22It's just ugly as sin.
05:23I'd probably put a skin on this or something and call it a day.
05:25Okay.
05:26The bottom line is this.
05:27Apple's entire lineup right now, with their computing lineup and the price of their phone repairs,
05:32is just...
05:33It's crazy right now.
05:34I feel like their customers are getting screwed left, right, and center,
05:37and this is the world we live in.
05:39Okay.
05:40Hope you guys enjoyed this video.
05:41Thumbs if you liked it.
05:42Subs if you loved it.
05:43See you guys next time.
