00:00Hey, how's it going? Dave2D here. This is the Dell G3. This is Dell's cheapest gaming
00:08laptop in their G-series lineup. So, the G3, G5, G7, this is their entry-level model, and
00:13it's their cheapest one. It starts at $750, but the question I think a lot of people have
00:18is whether or not this particular model is worth it. Is this thing actually a better
00:23value or a better pickup than the G5 or G7 or other devices in that pricing. Let's take
00:30a look at it. So, first, build quality. This is a device that is entirely plastic, and
00:34most of the devices in the G-series are like this. It's got a blue theme going through
00:38the whole device. So, the keyboard deck has this blue striping pattern going through it,
00:42which I think doesn't look amazing. It almost cheapens the aesthetic of this. Not that I
00:46dislike the color blue, you guys know I love it, but it just, there's something about this
00:50particular pattern that makes it look a little bit cheap. The top deck is this satin blue
00:55finish. I do like the look of that, and the logo is that metallic blue, which I do like.
00:58I think the design on the whole is nice when it's closed, but when it's open, there's something
01:03about this, like, candy stripe or pinstripe design that it just, it's just not doing it
01:07for me. But, if you're into it, it's got that look. So, the build quality is actually pretty
01:11good. There's no weak spots on the chassis, and the hinge feels well made. The top panel
01:16itself has a little bit of flex to it, but it's nothing crazy. It's not an aluminum tank,
01:21but it's built well. The bottom panel has the same kind of finish as the top. It's that
01:25satin blue, so it's a very uniform look to this whole device. One thing to note that
01:29this is a thinner device than the G5 and the G7. Not a lot thinner, but it is a little
01:34bit thinner, and also a little bit more compact in terms of footprint. So, to remove the bottom
01:39panel, it's 10 screws, and I don't love that. I mean, there are devices made by Dell that
01:44are just one screw. Remove it, and you're in. This has a bunch, so if you're just not
01:49super hardware-inclined, then this might be a little more intimidating, but relatively
01:54easy to get in there. Inside, you get easy access to everything. Your two RAM slots,
01:59your Wi-Fi card, your two drives, and you also have really easy access to the fans in
02:03case you need to clean them in the future. The Wi-Fi card is actually slower than I was
02:07hoping. This is actually one of the slowest Wi-Fi cards I've used in a while. It's not
02:11a huge problem because you can easily find replacements, like really good ones for like
02:14$15, $20 on eBay, so it's not a huge problem, but the one that they include for stock is
02:20not great. The battery, 56 watt-hours, not a particularly big one, around 4.5 hours of
02:25regular use. You're going to have to bring a charger if you're going to bring this into
02:28class for a full day. Okay, ports on this thing. Depending on the unit that you have,
02:32you may or may not get USB-C, so the higher specced models with the 1060 Max-Q will get
02:38a Thunderbolt 3 port, but the lower specced models don't. You also get an Ethernet port
02:42and an SD card slot. It's got a fair selection of ports, but on the base models, because
02:46it doesn't have USB-C in 2018, that's a bit of a minus for me, but, I don't know, $750,
02:52that's what you get. The speakers are located on the front, or the bottom front. They're
02:57okay. They're not amazing. Laptop speakers, very generic sound, but I can't say I'm too
03:01disappointed. Alright, opening up the lid, we have a mediocre screen. Again, at $750,
03:07I'm not expecting too much, but this screen is not particularly bright, not particularly
03:12color accurate, but I'm comfortable playing games on it. The keyboard, it's a good layout.
03:17I actually really like this keyboard. I would say that this is its biggest strength, and
03:21I think this is a keyboard that a lot of people will like. The trackpad uses Windows Precision
03:25drivers. Good tracking. The surface is, it's not my favorite. It's like a textured plastic.
03:32It's got this wobble, or play, on the trackpad, which is a little bit weird. Button mechanism
03:36is also just okay, because of that wobble. So, the performance on this device is probably
03:41my biggest concern. This is a model that's running the 1050 Ti. It's not their most powerful
03:46configuration, and the thermals are hot. It doesn't throttle, and the fan noise isn't
03:51too loud or anything, but I do wish that the temperatures were a little bit lower. Now,
03:54you could repace this. You could undervolt it, but at stock, I don't love those temperatures,
03:58and this is the reason why I don't think that this particular device is worth the savings
04:03compared to the G5 or G7, because if you pick up something like the G7, you're just
04:07going to get better thermals. Performance is going to be very similar, if not identical,
04:11but I don't like the fact that the temperatures are running so hot. Now, if your heart is set
04:15on this device, there are a couple advantages. Number one, it's a little bit thinner, and just
04:19like sleeker looking. The thinner bezels are nicer, and I also think the device is less flashy
04:23looking, so if you're bringing this to work, and you don't want it to stand out as like a gaming
04:26device, this kind of fits the bill better, but I think for most people, if they're looking for
04:31performance, and they want a device that just has better thermals, and will have a longer lifespan
04:35because of the better thermals, I would look at the G5 or G7 instead of the G3. Okay, I hope you
04:41guys enjoyed this video. Thumbs if you liked it, subs if you loved it. I'll see you guys next time.
