00:00Okay, so I had some thoughts about the new OLED Nintendo Switch that I wanted to share
00:07with you guys.
00:08I'm someone who plays a lot of Switch.
00:09I have three of them.
00:10I've busted a bunch of controllers, like drifting controllers.
00:12But in general, I like the product.
00:14But I do not follow the leaks and rumors and kind of news around consoles very much, right?
00:19I got my hands on other tech.
00:21But a couple days ago, Nintendo announces the new OLED Switch.
00:25And my first reaction was like, that's awesome, an OLED screen, a bigger screen, an updated
00:30dock with the LAN port on the side.
00:31It seemed like a nice little refresh.
00:33But then I hop into Twitter, and I go on Reddit, and it seems like people are pissed.
00:38People wanted more.
00:39They expected more, right?
00:40And I think a lot of it stemmed from rumors and kind of early leaks that may have been
00:45mishandled.
00:46But it just seemed like people were expecting a brand new SoC, like a hard refresh.
00:53And when I first see these comments, I'm like, yeah, I agree.
00:56A new SoC on a Nintendo Switch would have been real nice.
00:59But then, the more I thought about it, I was like, did the Nintendo Switch really need
01:04an upgrade?
01:05Like, I come from a world of smartphones and laptops where, you know, a manufacturer changes
01:10the color on the back of the device, and people are like, that's awesome.
01:12And they go out and buy it.
01:13So, to me, a nice refresh like this, I thought it was pretty cool.
01:18And then I looked into these rumors.
01:19There were reputable sources talking about the possibility of a 1080p OLED panel and
01:24a device that could be docked and output 4K60.
01:27Like, it seemed like a pipe dream, right?
01:31We're talking about a small Nintendo Switch that is a very small fan, pulls maybe 10,
01:3612 watts on the SoC.
01:37You think this thing can output 4K60 to a TV like PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X?
01:43Those have a tough time doing it already.
01:45And those are big devices that have a ton of power draw.
01:48I get it.
01:50DLSS, the whole idea of it, it sounds cool on paper, but to be able to pull that off
01:54on this size, right now especially, I, come on, man.
01:59What are we talking about?
02:00And the whole idea of a higher resolution screen, you want these things to be 720p.
02:04You want them for the lower power draw, the less strain on the GPU.
02:08Putting a 1080p panel on a device like this, that's not the move.
02:13Like this is, I really think this is what it should be.
02:15An OLED panel, bigger screen, 720p.
02:18You don't need to bump the SoC.
02:20But the big thing I want to talk about, the thing I think a lot of people are kind of
02:23missing from the conversation is scale.
02:27When you look at the numbers of what the Nintendo Switch really is, it kind of puts things into
02:32perspective.
02:33So Nintendo Switch, super popular device.
02:36This is a, at this point, four-year-old device.
02:39And they've sold, I think, around 90 million units, right?
02:42A lot of devices, very popular.
02:44And in their latest fiscal year, so from March, 2020 to March, 2021, they sold almost 29 million
02:50units of the Nintendo Switch.
02:52It's just a very, very well-selling device.
02:55But you need to keep these numbers in mind.
02:57So it's a four-year-old device, 90 million units, roughly, sold over the past four years.
03:02And in the last year, like the one that just passed, almost 29 million units sold.
03:07Okay.
03:09If Nintendo was to come out with a new product, like a new Nintendo Switch Pro, whatever they
03:15want to call it, they would need a ridiculous number of chips.
03:19Like the fabrication to make a new chip for this new product would be impossible right
03:24now.
03:25Like if you think about the GPU shortage, you think getting a graphics card was difficult
03:29over the past year.
03:30Can you imagine a Switch?
03:32There'd be no shot.
03:33It'd be like a scalper's wet dream to have Nintendo Switches that could scalp for like
03:37a thousand bucks.
03:38It would be impossible.
03:40But the bigger thing I want to draw your attention to is the success of the Switch over the past
03:46year.
03:47So during the pandemic, for whatever reason, the Nintendo Switches just exploded in popularity.
03:52Normally on a fourth year of a device, you do not see a massive uptick in sales, right?
03:58It's just, that's not normally how things go.
04:00It's like the first two, maybe three years, any consoles like this, right?
04:03Does well.
04:04Then there's this natural decline.
04:05But on year four of the Nintendo Switch, it blew up.
04:08The pandemic and like the desire for gaming just exploded and they are riding this sweet,
04:13sweet wave right now.
04:15And to introduce new hardware right now at the peak of their popularity, that'd be the
04:19dumbest thing to do.
04:21Who would want to do that?
04:22Any kind of business minded person would be like, Nintendo, don't put out new hardware
04:27right now with a more powerful chip.
04:28You only want to do that when you have to, when your brand is on the decline and people
04:32aren't as interested in the console.
04:34That's when you do it.
04:35Everyone does it.
04:36Not right now.
04:37At the peak of their popularity, when they sold 29 million units on their fourth year,
04:41like to put that into perspective, to put that number into perspective, PlayStation
04:455, I think they're going to hit like 11, maybe 12 million units on their first year.
04:51Like the most popular year for the PlayStation 5, same with Xbox.
04:54That's probably gonna hit eight, maybe 9 million units sold.
04:57You see what I'm trying to get at?
04:58For Nintendo to be like, yeah, let's break that momentum.
05:01Let's just like, you know, cut our sales and put out new hardware to appease the enthusiasts.
05:07What would that achieve for them?
05:09If anything, I would go so far as to say that even if they did have something planned, like
05:13let's say they had hardware lined up and they had the supply chain ready to go, pull the
05:16plug on that project.
05:18You want to ride this for as long as you can.
05:20That's the most Nintendo thing to do.
05:22Because if they sold 29 million units on year four, number one, they don't need new hardware.
05:26Number two, people are clearly satisfied with the existing hardware.
05:30Like I don't care what the enthusiasts tell you, the numbers speak for themselves.
05:34People are perfectly happy with this.
05:37Just enough.
05:38And you know what?
05:39Nintendo is the king of doing just enough.
05:41Like the bare minimum to keep people happy and to make a ton of money in the process.
05:45But that's my take on the new OLED Nintendo Switch.
05:49I think it's kind of cool.
05:50Like I think an OLED panel on a handheld device is really nice, but the truth is they don't
05:57need new SoC.
05:58They really don't right now.
06:00Okay, hope you guys enjoyed this video.
06:01Thumbs if you liked it.
06:02Subs if you loved it.
06:03See you guys next time.
