00:00My name is Mark Rose, and I was raised in Juneau, Alaska, and eventually got into aviation
00:22at a very young age.
00:37Alaska is very, very unique.
00:39We've got mountains in some places from sea level to 16,000 feet.
00:44You have glaciers, you have tens of thousands of miles of saltwater coastline, immense amounts
00:50of game.
00:51It was very, very wild.
00:54It was very frontier.
00:58I saw some of my father's friends get mauled by bears.
01:03Some of the pilots he knew that he flew with crashed and died or just disappeared.
01:11And one of the reasons we went out into the northern country was the caribou.
01:18What we saw was thousands of caribou as far as the eye could see.
01:25I figured out a place to land.
01:27I set Mick down, but we knew we were kind of pushing the limits with fuel and time.
01:32I mean, you are absolutely on your own.
01:37The weather was deteriorating.
01:40It was snowing hard in the air, and I was becoming, I was getting into a place where
01:46I was using up all my fuel and all my hours.
01:52The last I saw was that plane heading into a snowbank.
01:59Pretty soon, both tanks were on E. The weather was worse.
02:03I was in the mountains at night, trapped in the sky.
02:07I'm thinking, will I ever see him again?
02:12He still comes back.
02:16I'm in an up jam here.
02:19If there's a God, I could use help.
02:24This is the kind of stuff we live for.
02:26I'm Mark Rose.
02:28I'm the author of Last of the Long Hunters.
