Das Biopic I'm Still Here basiert auf den Memoiren von Marcelo Rubens Paiva, in denen er die Geschichte seiner Familie erzählt. Im Fokus stehen dabei unter anderem die Geschehnisse in den 60er Jahren, als Paivas Vater vom Militärregime gefangen genommen und seine Mutter gezwungen wurde, Aktivistin zu werden.
