00:00motorcycles that's Carol Richardson he ran fourth last time and now let's go to
00:05Steve with a winner of that first moto George Holland well I'm a George Holland
00:10we're just about ready for the final 125 moto and a shovel seems to be a popular
00:13tool up here yeah we just need to kind of flatten it out make sure there's no
00:17ruts and get a nice packed place for you won't spin off the start right you won
00:22the first motor you're looking for a good start here obviously to wrap it up
00:25yeah I'm just gonna go for a good start and then just go for a big win if you
00:28don't get the good start do you have to kind of calm down and not push too hard
00:32too fast no I think I got a push harder first and get out there just get out
00:37there then maybe you can relax a little bit yeah I get the lead and then relax
00:40what about your starting position here you're pretty close to the left end of
00:42the gate yeah it's a little better because once you get up there you're on
00:45the inside in case you know you can let off and cut to the inside you can still
00:48come out good go get him okay thanks well it's gonna be interesting with this
00:52young man and a whole bunch of the best riders in the world right it sure is
00:56Steve as we get ready to go that is Carol Richardson the man who led the
01:01opening laps of Moto 1 and then fell back to finish in the fourth spot and
01:05here on his Yamaha is Doug Dubac who had a spectacular ride in the first Moto
01:09finishing a close second to George Holland George of course one of the very
01:14best riders in this business came out of the middle of the pack first to do a
01:17Richardson and then Dubac and to take the win in Moto 1 in convincing style
01:21also still eligible for an overall win would be Larry Brooks who finished in
01:26the third spot in that first Moto Larry Brooks currently with 36 points don't
01:30count him out the clock ticking away the gate about to fall each rider in his
01:34individual slot and here we look at the start from the perspective of 9-11 Sean
01:39Camos the 14 year old pro from Arizona
01:43and he gets the hole shot and it's Camos out first
01:45what a start for this young rider
01:47terrific start as they head into turn 1
01:49rider down
01:51there are a total now of 3 riders down
01:53the start has claimed 3 victims
01:56Bruce Maynard and Rick Tokinski
01:58all 3 down but none of them hurt
02:00and it looks as if they'll all restart
02:02but of course way way behind the current leader
02:04and that is young Sean Camos
02:06on the 9-11 bike
02:08right behind him though George Holland
02:10that's right George Holland who won the first Moto
02:12if he can get by Sean
02:14pick up this win
02:16there will be no contest in the points
02:18and there you see him
02:20first through the picture was Camos
02:22then Holland and the rest of the field
02:24and there goes Holland
02:26by Camos off the jump
02:28we've seen a couple of other passes there
02:30a lot of finesse on the part of that 65 rider
02:32George Holland
02:34and it looks as if he's going to move out in front a little bit more
02:36as they head up the hill Steve
02:38what a coup it would be for this young man from Arizona
02:40only 14 as we've said
02:42if he can get around Holland
02:44I'll tell you the factory would take note of that
02:46he is right now a support rider
02:48he gets the bikes and some parts
02:50but he does not have the factory mechanics
02:53well he's certainly hanging in there
02:55consider the boy's age
02:57of course none of these guys are exactly senior citizens
02:59and all of them started riding motorcycles
03:01between the ages of about
03:035 and 8 years old
03:05look at that
03:07Camos challenged Holland there
03:09in that right hander but fell back a little bit
03:11you notice Steve that it looks as if George
03:13may have a little bit more power
03:15on the straightaways than Camos has
03:17and of course the whole riding 125cc
03:19motorcycle must weigh a minimum
03:21of 191 pounds dry
03:23but they throw him around Brock in mid-air
03:25as if they weighed about 10 pounds
03:27there goes Holland off Devil's Drop
03:29followed immediately by Camos
03:31Larry Brooks is still in third place
03:33doing a good job, he's got a shot at it as well
03:35but right now if George can hold on
03:37and take this victory
03:39as you said earlier, he's a runaway
03:41as far as the overall points championship is concerned
03:43but one little miscue
03:45and he could be down in the Carlsbad Dirt
03:47that would open the door not only for Sean Camos
03:49but also for Larry Brooks
03:51but right now Steve, Holland
03:53has not put a wheel wrong
03:55in fact he's started to open it out a little bit on Camos
03:57but here is a replay
03:59of the start and remember what
04:01happened in that giant traffic jam in turn 1
04:03the first runner down in the yellow pants
04:05right there, that is 321
04:07Bruce Maynard, I don't believe anybody
04:09look at the bike going after the rider
04:11I don't believe anybody hitting Brock, he was a little bit on the outside
04:13he tried to cut in too sharply
04:15and just lost it
04:17and here's your race for 5th spot
04:19remember these guys, Carroll Richardson and Doug Duback
04:21they ran very well in the first moto
04:23but right now, they cannot
04:25seem to handle the leader George Holland
04:27Duback on the very team
04:29headed for that downhill section they call the Carlsbad Freeway
04:31and there is your race
04:33for 2nd, Sean Camos and
04:35Larry Brooks battling it out
04:37and the 9-11 bike, that of course
04:39is the kid, Sean Camos
04:41and right behind him, Larry Brooks
04:43look at this, Brooks charges
04:45trying to fly in that corner
04:47and now, rides underneath
04:49but can't make it stick
04:51Camos showing all kinds of poise here
04:53look at this though, Brooks challenging on every corner
04:55alright, as the action continues
04:57let's go to Steve with a special guest
04:59well Brock, anyone who ever picked up
05:01a copy of Cycle News Magazine
05:03will recognize this man
05:05he won the United States Grand Prix here at Carlsbad
05:075 times, Garrett Wolsink
05:09the press always referred to you, Garrett, as the racing dentist
05:11and you're now retired and practicing dentistry in Holland
05:13yeah, since a couple of years
05:15I really am a dentist now, before they always called me
05:17flying dentist, but you know
05:19I was a professional motocross rider
05:21what brings you to Carlsbad?
05:23you know, I was on a vacation here
05:25and I'm promoting supercross myself in Holland
05:27and I went to the Anaheim Stadium
05:29and they told me there was a race on Carlsbad
05:31and it brings back
05:33so much memories, so I had to go over here
05:35what do you think of the talent
05:37of the American riders on the scene today?
05:39oh, America, I mean they got lots of talent
05:41and they got lots of money by the importers
05:43you know, to really support the teams
05:45and motocross really
05:47took off big
05:49in the United States
05:51and once they understood the kind of
05:53physical conditioning that Roger Dacosta
05:55and yourself always knew, is when they seemed to really take off
05:57yeah, because that's the
05:59that's the biggest problem of motocross
06:01a lot of people don't really think
06:03you need to be
06:05you know, like in top shape
06:07but at the moment the Americans
06:09they realize it takes to be in top condition
06:11and they started training
06:13and because of the American way of living
06:15I think, I mean they do it
06:17even better than we do it in Europe
06:19it's more professional, there's more opportunities
06:21and they're just dominating
06:23motocross right now
06:25do you get a little itchy to put the helmet on
06:27watching all this today?
06:29oh no, that's completely over, I enjoy watching
06:31because I'm still also team manager
06:33for Honda Holland
06:35and I like to stand on the side and helping the young guys out
06:37but no itchy to ride anymore
06:39wonderful to see you again
06:41thank you very much
06:43and speaking of champions, you may be watching
06:45one of the future greats
06:47here, Sean Calos
06:49on the 911 bike, holding off the
06:51veteran Larry Brooks in the second spot
06:53as George Holland
06:55leads it here at the Golden State Nationals
06:57the 125 Moto2
06:59right now Larry Brooks
07:01mounting a charge on Sean Calos
07:03and he got him, 20 year old Larry Brooks
07:05on a Honda, gets around 14
07:07year old Calos on a similar motorcycle
07:09what a ride
07:11it showed a little bit more poise
07:13on the part of Brooks who just
07:15kind of waited and waited and waited
07:17a lot of patience and really
07:19it wasn't Calos fault, he didn't bobble it
07:21just that Brooks kind of drove around him
07:23in an opportune moment, now though
07:25he's starting to move it out a little bit
07:27Calos may be falling back
07:29it could be Steve, he's got some problems
07:31with the bike too, he was just looking over his right
07:33shoulder there maybe just to see what the competition
07:35was or whatever, but I think you're right
07:37he's falling back a little too fast
07:39there is your race for the 7th
07:41spot, Jim Tarantino presently
07:43holding down that position, but right behind him
07:45Eddie Hicks and Jeff Leisk
07:47on the 82 bike, challenging
07:49right now though in the 9th position
07:51Tarantino seems to be
07:53able to hold off Hicks though
07:55well that remains to be seen, Brock on the uphill
07:57force, it's Hicks on the Yamaha on the inside
07:59is able to pull even, but downhill
08:01it seems that Tarantino has the advantage
08:03you know Steve, you forget
08:05that these guys are shifting gears all the way
08:07around this track as well as
08:09just showing incredible balance
08:11and using the throttle, but
08:13the poise and athletic skills of these
08:15guys is almost beyond comprehension
08:17really, well they're shifting gears hundreds
08:19of times in the 12 lap race
08:21absolutely, so that left foot
08:23is just jiggling up and down on that shift lever
08:25the right hand working that throttle
08:27and the brakes on the left and the right
08:29everything is working
08:31every digit, every part of your body
08:33and here is the fight for 4th spot
08:35that is Willie Surratt
08:37trying to hold off Doug Dubac, number 18
08:39Dubac was CMC number 1 last year
08:41Brock, the best in the organization
08:43a fine rider, as is Willie Surratt
08:45he is currently in the 4th spot
08:47he's from Canyon Country, California
08:49he's 18 years old and rides with
08:51Honda support, that doesn't mean he's
08:53as you say, a full teen rider
08:55but he's getting a lot of help
08:57and they're both hungry, witness this
08:59competition for 4th place
09:01Willie Surratt getting a lot of pressure from Doug Dubac
09:03as they come up the hill into the right hander
09:05Dubac is on the inside, Dubac
09:07pulling along, even Dubac
09:09is going to execute the pass, he did it
09:11it should work, yeah, he got right
09:13in front, underneath him and holds on
09:15to that 4th spot, good, good
09:17move by Doug Dubac
09:19down the hill, let go, this may
09:21be one of the fastest parts of the course
09:23probably knocking out about 70 miles
09:25an hour I would say in here, wouldn't you Steve?
09:27at least that Brock, and the track is really
09:29getting rough, it's supposed to at Motocross
09:31alright, here is your
09:33race for 6th spot, Jim Tarangino
09:35has just squeezed past
09:37Carol Richardson, right behind them
09:39is Jeff Leis, these 3 have been
09:41battling all afternoon
09:43for that particular spot, but right now
09:45it's Tarangino who's holding it down
09:47and has opened up just a little bit
09:49of a margin on Richardson there on the inside
09:51so it's Tarangino on the outside
09:53Richardson on the inside, the red bike
09:55just behind them, the Australian Jeff Leis
09:57they are really duking it out for this 6th spot
09:59aren't they, oh boy
10:01look at that, there goes Tarangino
10:03leading the way down the hill
10:05right behind them now, Carol Richardson
10:07remember Richardson led it earlier
10:09in Moto 1 Steve, and then just
10:11must have had some mechanical problems and fell
10:13back to finish in 4th spot, right
10:15now though he's in the same basic
10:17position, he's back, well
10:19back from the leaders, but still
10:21in contention for 6th, well the start
10:23so important, and neither or none
10:25of these 3 riders actually got a great start
10:27it'd be further up than they are, absolutely
10:29right now though it's still George Holland
10:31leading it way, way up front
10:33as we watch Tarangino, Richardson
10:35and Leis go at it
10:37they may not be in contention for the victory
10:39but you can be sure they're having all kinds of fun
10:41out there, this is what motocross riders love
10:43this just intense competition
10:45well Doug Dubock and Willie Surratt
10:47are still waging war for the 4th spot
10:49number 18 there, that was Doug Dubock
10:51that's Yamaha, Willie Surratt
10:53just behind him, remember Steve
10:55it was Dubock that finished in
10:572nd spot in Moto 1 after
10:59what you would call a
11:01spirited duel with the ultimate winner
11:03George Holland, right now though
11:05he's got his hands full with Surratt
11:07who is, as we said earlier, one of the
11:09younger riders on this circuit, and right
11:11now enjoys Honda support, of course
11:13Dubock has Yamaha support
11:15and you know to arrive at the position
11:17they are right now in their career
11:19all of these guys started as little mini expert riders
11:21when they were maybe 8 or 9 years old
11:23progressed into junior class, the intermediate
11:25and finally graduated into this pro category
11:27you figure there's over 7,000 riders
11:29in CMC, really a tribute to a guy
11:31like Doug Dubock to have made it to this point
11:33and as you said
11:35held the number 1 spot
11:37in CMC competition last year
11:39so Dubock is definitely
11:41a contender in all forms of motocross
11:43but he's got to be plenty worried
11:45right now about Willie Surratt on the
11:47number 1 bike just behind him
11:49Surratt appears to maybe be bridging
11:51some of that gap, but if you were
11:53rooting for the youngster, the 14 year old
11:55we got some bad news, 9.11 Sean Calos
11:57has gone off of the court and has dropped
11:59way back to 11th, but he's still out there trying
12:01and contesting him for that
12:03number 11 spot is great, Dirks in fact
12:05he just moved by him, Dirks another
12:07Arizona rider, but you know Steve
12:09considering the age of
12:11young Sean Calos, it's just very
12:13difficult to I suppose maintain that level
12:15of concentration and poise for
12:17an entire moto. I think it's just a matter
12:19of him developing physically in the next couple
12:21of years. And I'm sure the emotional
12:23maturity that is required to
12:25maintain this intense level of competition
12:27but right now though, Sean Calos
12:29is giving his pal from Arizona
12:31Dre Dirks all he can ask
12:33for in terms of competition
12:35as these two riders carry on around
12:37this almost 1 mile
12:39Carlsbad circuit. That's right
12:41The circuit can be laid out in a number of configurations
12:43the USGP, it's about a mile
12:45and a quarter, today it's about 7-8
12:47to a mile, so you can play around with these hill sides
12:49and create whatever kind of course you want
12:51Sean Calos, a good kid
12:53as we said, his grandfather with that great big
12:55motorhome with their rolling
12:57shop and a hospitality
12:59suite on board, these guys
13:01live pretty good. You bet they do
13:03and they can make some big money when they get a factory ride
13:05like this man has, George Holland
13:07and he is doing right now exactly
13:09what Suzuki pays him so much to do
13:11and that's lead the race
13:13Number 65, George Holland
13:15can he win him back to back?
13:17Sure looks promising. Larry Brooks in second
13:19followed by Doug Dubat, Willie Surratt
13:21and the Australian Jeff Lees. I wonder if Holland
13:23hasn't backed down just a little bit
13:25his mechanics down at the start-finish line telling him
13:27easy boy, Larry Brooks is back there
13:29you've got a nice cushion, don't break the machine
13:31let's win this thing. This is the final
13:33moto, Holland won the first one
13:35and looks like he may be on his way to a second
13:37consecutive victory, but not if Larry Brooks
13:39has anything to say about it. Larry Brooks
13:41is hanging in there, but Holland
13:43as you say, seems to have
13:45superior power and of course is one of the most
13:47expert riders ever. And it may
13:49just be the riding talent that's the difference
13:51here Brock, the bikes would appear to be
13:53pretty evenly matched. So
13:55there is Larry Brooks doing his
13:57best, and there on the right side
13:59of your screen in the yellow livery
14:01is George Holland on his team Suzuki
14:03and I mentioned the level of the
14:05riding ability. Now you see kind of a
14:07wild abandon there on the part of Larry Brooks
14:09Holland makes it look so easy, he is much smoother
14:11Well if there's any consistent
14:13trademark among any great player
14:15in any kind of a sport, it's that the best ones
14:17seem to make it look easy
14:19Winning is Yamaha in the third spot right now
14:21is Doug Duboc, number 18. He has
14:23a couple of turns, however, behind Larry Brooks
14:25But he has
14:27apparently disposed to the challenge of
14:29Willie Surratt, who you remember was really
14:31working on him for that position
14:33But now Willie has fallen back a bit
14:35and Doug is riding all alone
14:37Now Doug had a second place finish
14:39in the first medal, he's riding third now
14:41Should anything happen to George Holland up front
14:43there, Duboc conceivably could still
14:45win this thing. Well also don't forget
14:47that Larry Brooks and Duboc
14:49are going to fight it out for that second spot
14:51presuming that Holland holds on to the win
14:53So it's surely a very
14:55important moment in the event
14:57for Doug Duboc
