00:00Welcome to the Footballer Show here on PLZ Soccer's YouTube channel. I'm Kerry Pollock
00:08joined here with Tam McManus, Scott Allen and Ryan McGowan. Lots to talk about today
00:11on the show. Scotland gain a point in their draw with Portugal. Neil Critchley excited
00:15to get things started at Hearts. Can the Dons come to Glasgow and pick up their 14th win
00:19of the season? And has Alec Ferguson been left in the cold at United? Tam, let's start
00:24with Scotland. What did you make of the performance overall? I thought it was a great performance
00:28to be honest. I thought that we defended really strongly. Created the better chances
00:33I think to win the game. I think McTominay's got to score. I think you want that 41 person
00:38in the Scotland jersey is Scott McTominay. Heads it straight to the goalkeeper. I think
00:42Chrissie's a good chance as well. It drops to the edge of the box. Portugal huffed and
00:46puffed. Never really looked like breaking us down I don't think until maybe the last
00:4910-15 minutes. They brought Lowell in wide and he gave Ralfsson a bit of a tank in the
00:54last 10-15 minutes. I thought we deserved a draw. I'm just glad we got what we deserved.
00:59I don't think we got it against Croatia. In every game, if you look at every game in this
01:03group we've been competitive in every game. I think we're improving. I think we're definitely
01:08improving from the Euros to now. I think we're improving. The cynics will still say we're
01:131-1 in 16 now. It depends if we're a glass half full or a glass half empty. I was pretty
01:19impressed with the performance. Scott, does it make a difference now that we have a lot
01:22of players having got the experience of playing abroad? I think it does. Playing in different
01:30countries you adjust to different systems, different types of players. Just to echo what
01:35Tam says in terms of where we're now at considering after how poor we were at the Euros. I think
01:40there is a big improvement taking into consideration the teams we've been playing against. We look
01:45as if we have a style of playing on top of that with the injuries and the costs we've
01:49had. I think the players can hold their heads high and Steve Clarke to be honest. Steve
01:54Clarke says even though it's just 1-1 in 16 there's certainly not been a confidence issue
01:57within the squads. Their confidence was fine. Everybody keeps talking about their confidence
02:02but their confidence was fine because they know they can play well. Maybe with the ball
02:08tonight we didn't play quite as well as we normally do. I think a lot of the missed passes
02:13were probably down a little bit to fatigue because I asked a lot of the same boys to
02:18do a doubleheader in the games. I don't think they lack confidence. Obviously tonight's
02:26point against one of the top European sides is going to give us more confidence, or even
02:33more confidence going into the November games. We go to those games determined to get more
02:37points on the board.
02:39And Portugal manager Roberto Martinez says he's very impressed with the way that Steve
02:45Clarke have got Scotland playing at the moment.
02:48Absolutely. I think it's not a surprise. I think we had two tough games but I think Poland
02:53and Croatia had two tough games as well. You're talking about very small margins. I think
02:57Steve Clarke is building a national team that looks like a club and that's a big, big compliment.
03:04Everybody works for each other. They know the structure. They're brave when they have
03:07to be. They've got quick attacks. They've got a lot of quality. Scottish players playing
03:12abroad makes a big difference. Playing in the city, getting the experience of the Premier
03:16League is a very good dressing room.
03:18Brian, is there a different feel to playing with a club in and out every week to then
03:22going to play for your country?
03:24Yes, I think so. I think especially when you're playing abroad and then you get to come back
03:28and see most of them will be friends or teammates and get that catch up you've maybe not had
03:35at club level. The boys have just gone to Italy. They'll be loving the time spending
03:39it back in Scotland, seeing family. Like what the manager said there, I think it is a real
03:45close-knit group. They seem to all enjoy training and playing together and fingers
03:50crossed they can start picking up the points that probably their performances deserve.
03:53Tim, one of the key moments in the game was probably Craig Gordon's crucial save in the
03:57second half. I think every Scottish goalkeeper must be thinking, when is he going to hang
04:01up his boots so that I can get a go at this?
04:04Yes, I mean he's 41 now. Craig, I remember playing him in Scotland at 21 a long time
04:10ago and he's still going. He's still playing, it's incredible. It was a fantastic save.
04:19He didn't have a lot to do in terms of saves but just that one save at the end, I think
04:24it was Ronaldo and he nearly scored. It was a fantastic save and I think after that I
04:29felt we were going to see the game out. Then obviously Ronaldo has his wee strop in the
04:33toilet at the end which we'll maybe talk about. Listen, I think he's got to sell back into
04:39the team at hearts and a lot of people will now be saying, well why did we not take him
04:42to the Euros? He's going straight into the team now. I think he's still got a year or
04:47two in him. If he's playing every week for hearts he's still fit and agile and I think
04:51he'll decide when he's going to retire rather than the other way about.
04:53Did you guys ever play with anybody that you thought just never would retire, always had
04:57the ability right up to the end?
04:59I wish he retired earlier.
05:04Anybody come to mind?
05:06In terms of being super fit?
05:08Yeah, he was at the top of their game the whole time.
05:10I've got one, Craig Brewster. I played with Brewster at Hibs. Craig joined Hibs when he
05:17was 34 and I thought, he's good but he can't really run. He played until he was 40 with
05:23Dunfermline. He played for another six years and I kept seeing him in the Premier League
05:25with Stevie Crawford, he was class. So for me, Craig Brewster is probably the one that
05:29I thought if he ever wanted to retire, eventually he did but he played until he was 40-odd.
05:33Simon Rankin was another one that was just super fit. I played with him at Dundee United
05:38and I'm pretty sure he completed the yo-yo test. He finished it. No one ever finishes
05:45the yo-yo test and he finished it instantly.
05:49Not that he started it, that's what I mean.
05:51But yeah, he was one that was super professional, didn't eat, ate properly, didn't have McDonald's.
05:57No, McDonald's was the last game of the season.
06:01He would have a McDonald's and then on holiday he would have one glass of Coca-Cola and that
06:05was the only sort of soft drink or sweets or that he would have all season.
06:09Seems like a good laugh that night, doesn't it?
06:12He was great at the Christmas dood.
06:15Right, you mentioned Ronaldo, Tam. Not a fan of throwing the toys out the private end?
06:19I've never been a fan of Ronaldo. Listen, take it away, he's a fantastic player, he's
06:24world class, he's fit, he's looked after his cell, he's hungered everything, he's desired
06:30everything about him in terms of his football career. He's fantastic, one of the best ever.
06:35I've just never really taken to him as a player. I don't know him, maybe it would have been
06:41really unfair because you get that with people, you've got an impression of them for what
06:44they're like in the park and they're not like that off the park.
06:46But nah, his antics at the end last night, there's lots of kids there watching the game
06:51and look up to him.
06:54They really do, with him.
06:55They look up to him because, as we were talking about before the show, there are a lot of
06:58younger kids that are team Ronaldo rather than team Messi. Nah, I didn't really like
07:03it and I felt it was all about him. Same with the Neuros, but listen, there'll be people
07:09shouting what you're talking about, but nah, he's not a big fan of me. I'm a Messi man,
07:15I'm not having Ronaldo. I'm not jealous because he's got a six-pack, he's good-looking, but
07:19I'm not having him.
07:21You've never lost your temper on the pitch, save it for the dressing room?
07:25Aye, I have lost it, aye. Nah, I just didn't like it. For an experienced player, there's
07:30kids there that were probably all, thankfully the schools are off this week, they wouldn't
07:34be copying them in the classroom. Nah, I didn't like it, but that just shows you how well
07:38Scotland didn't frustrate him. I remember my boy Dope fouled him and I think he looked
07:42up to him to start laughing, aye, and Ronaldo was going, who are you? Nah, he's not for
07:50me.
07:51Was there a fine line-line between throwing the toys at the prim and passion?
07:56Yeah, I think so. I agree with what Tam said, I thought it was a bit over the top. It wasn't
08:02as if the referee had cost them the game. It was a bit...
08:06Dramatised?
08:07I think he was moaning because they didn't let the corner come in. I think that was his
08:10biggest type of thing, but yeah, I felt like it was just super over the top. If they'd
08:15maybe had a couple of goals chalked off and the ref had an absolute stinker, you could
08:18understand it a little bit more, but yeah, he's surely old enough and experienced enough
08:23to realise that, I think it was his first time playing in Scotland, there were so many
08:26kids that would have just went just to see him. Yeah, just be a little bit cuter about
08:31it I guess.
08:33Just to put it on the opposite then, have you ever been on the end of a manager who's
08:35lost the rag in the dressing room? You definitely have, you've said your stories before.
08:41In terms of personal?
08:43Or at anybody else?
08:44Yeah, I've obviously had Lennon. I feel like every podcast somebody's got a story about
08:52Lenny going off his head, but yeah, I think with him it was just in the heat of the moment,
09:01he would say what he was feeling and then he would start to calm down a couple of weeks
09:04later. I like that sort of management, what you see is what you get, I really liked that
09:10to be honest.
09:10Did he ever go at you?
09:11Nah, do you know what, I didn't get many.
09:13He must have been his boy then.
09:14Yeah, he didn't get a few. Lou Stevenson got a few. Footwear and all that, the big
09:21one was footwear.
09:22Was he a slipper and all that?
09:23Yeah, aye.
09:24If he didn't, if he had mouldies on, you were under a major pee if he'd slipped in the
09:28game and you didn't get a chance of it.
09:31You were told to change your boots, were you not in the past?
09:34I was, that was with Bobby Olsen when I was at Hibs, because I knew I'd get sponsored
09:39by Nike, I don't know how I got a Nike contract, I just got them, I was just up there.
09:43So I was doing well at Hibs, I was scoring goals, I had a really tatty old pair of Umbro
09:48specials, the Umbro sign was hanging off them, but I was banging goals in, and my agent says
09:53listen, go to your Nike, and I put them on, I took the boots off that I was flying with
09:57and put them on, and I had a shocker against Andy Knight at home, and at half time Bobby
10:02was like, get your boots off, or you're coming off.
10:05What ones, was it like total 90s?
10:06No, it was like silver Nikes, aye, silver total 90 Nikes, like pure dazzling, I was
10:11wearing black Umbro specials, I remember going out to warm up and Bobby was just staring
10:15at me going, you got new boots and all that, he was raging, I had a stinker.
10:18It was such a thing back then even, like when I was coming through, I remember the first
10:22time I ever wore a pair of light coloured boots, I felt under real pressure.
10:26White boots, silver boots.
10:28It feels as if everybody's looking at you, because everybody's got them now.
10:31But the biggest rant I've ever seen was Steven Presley at Falkirk, that boy Jack Compton
10:37was a winger for us, a typical winger, hot and cold, and we played a pre-season game
10:43at Peterhead, and Jack had a stinker and he was walking about and Elvis went, honestly
10:47I'm not joking, I felt like I was nearly crying, saying you'll never play another game for
10:52me, you'll never have a career, you're a show pony, you're this, you're that, absolutely
10:56destroyed him for about 10 minutes, and then never played him again, just released him.
11:02In a pre-season game, because he walked about and Elvis shouted on him to come and get moving
11:05and he told him to f*** off, and that was it.
11:08That was that?
11:08So that was the biggest rant, I don't think he done anything after that, I think Elvis
11:13was probably right, but the boy Jack Compton at Falkirk, Steven Presley, rinsed him, like
11:17I was, destroyed him, worst I've ever seen in person or ever.
11:22Nicky Devlin will certainly be hoping that that wasn't the chat that Steve Clarke gave
11:26him after the game, after making his debut last night.
11:32We'll maybe get back to Nicky Devlin in a moment.
11:34Ryan, your first international debut came against Scotland, is that right?
11:37Easter Road.
11:38On my birthday as well.
11:39Yeah?
11:40What was the reception like with the Hearts connection?
11:43I got booed every time I touched it, I got booed when I was warming up, I got booed when
11:48I came on.
11:48Australian fans?
11:49Was that the Australian fans?
11:50Easter Road, yeah.
11:53But yeah, it was good.
11:54Obviously as soon as that game, that friendly was sort of penciled in, I was like, oh that's
12:00one that I might get a chance at.
12:02And then yeah, it was just perfect being in Scotland and I was still at Hearts at the
12:08time so I had a lot of friends and family that were here.
12:11And yeah, it was August 2012, so it was just after the cup final with Thomas.
12:21So it was, yeah, it was at Easter Road so I was getting pelters as soon as I walked
12:25out.
12:25But yeah, it was good, I think we got beat 3-1, I think it was.
12:31But yeah, I came on last 10-15 minutes and it was really good.
12:34The reception, can you block that out if you two have been on the end of that?
12:38Do you hear it?
12:38Does it pay much attention to it?
12:41I think it's when there's less fans there, isn't it?
12:43It's worse.
12:43I hear it.
12:44When you're playing at the wee grounds, if there's a couple of hundred people there,
12:48you just hear everything.
12:49If there's 50,000 there, you just don't hear it and you just get on with the game.
12:52Scott will probably tell you no, but Kelty, you can hear everything.
12:58I've found it a lot more, and I have had some.
13:03Some abuse obviously at bigger stadiums, but not on the scale where you hear it so clear,
13:08so quiet.
13:09It's actually funny though, isn't it?
13:11It's funny, somebody running down the line, you're chuckling, you know what I mean?
13:14Because the guys are absolutely hammering you.
13:16Hard not to give it back.
13:18Yeah, the end up, the way you react to it, you have a laugh about it.
13:21They end up laughing themselves, you know?
13:23I think that's part and parcel of Scottish football.
13:27So, I wouldn't take it away.
13:29Nah.
13:29Sam?
13:30No.
13:31Hi.
13:31A lot of it in your time.
13:33What was the name of that?
13:34Harrisburg Islanders, who play in America, are now defunct.
13:37I played for them against Rochester Rhinos against Harrisburg.
13:40I played for Rochester Rhinos, right?
13:41They were a team, right?
13:42In the American USL, right?
13:46I know.
13:47Right, against Hamburger.
13:49It's the cheeseburgers.
13:53Harrisburg Islanders, right?
13:54Some place in Pennsylvania.
13:56They're not, right?
13:56This is a true or false.
13:57Anyway, we're playing this game, and you don't get any abuse at all in America.
14:01Nobody knew who you were, nobody cared, right?
14:03They're just sitting eating burgers and drinking beer.
14:05So, five minutes into this game, there's this two guys, and they were Scottish,
14:10and they must have, I don't know who they were, and they were just giving me it.
14:13Constantly.
14:13They're eating pizzas.
14:14Mate, man, it's your gite, gite, crap.
14:17Get back to Scotland and all that, and then I scored after about 15 minutes,
14:21and I ran over and grabbed the one that was eating a slice of pizza,
14:23and I just ran right over it and grabbed the slice of pizza and took a bite of it.
14:28It's like, that's a true story, by the way.
14:31I know, it might be on YouTube somewhere, but...
14:33Can you do the impression of the accent of how they shouted at you?
14:36You suck, McManus.
14:38You just said he was Scottish.
14:40Aye, aye.
14:41If he was American.
14:43Oh, dear, right.
14:44Okay, that's the Scotland duties done and dusted for another day.
14:47Here's Cara with the news.
14:50Hello and welcome to your Daily News Headlines on Wednesday, 16th of October,
14:53sponsored by Arnold Clarke.
14:55Herta Middlothian's CEO, Andrew McKinley,
14:58says that the club are delighted to have Neil Critchley as manager,
15:01and that they are lucky to have him.
15:03He's worked with some really, really impressive people.
15:06I can't imagine these are people that suffer fools gladly.
15:09So I think, in many ways, we are lucky that we have Neil here,
15:15and I'm genuinely delighted that we have him here.
15:19Steve Clarke celebrated Craig Gordon's save last night to keep the game level,
15:22which is something that he says he hasn't done in a long time.
15:26When they did create the big, big chance, Craig made the save,
15:28which is the first time in a long time I've celebrated a goalkeeper's save.
15:32It was down to Tuttle to John and that's celebrated it.
15:36So it meant a lot to me, and it meant a lot to everybody in the stadium,
15:39because that's what gets you the point.
15:41Midfielder Lewis Morgan said that the Scotland boys were excellent last night,
15:44as they fought hard to grab a well-deserved point.
15:47Yeah, I mean, a well-earned point, obviously, against a top side,
15:51and the manager reiterated before the game tonight
15:53that there's no shortcuts to beating a Tottenham team
15:55or taking points off a Tottenham team,
15:56and we've done that tonight. I think the boys are excellent.
15:59Finally, Thomas Tuchel has said that he's very proud and honoured
16:02to be the new England manager,
16:04and could Kieran Tierney be making a return to Celtic in the new year,
16:07as the club are reportedly monitoring the left-backs' situation with Arsenal?
16:12Those were your daily news headlines on Wednesday 16th October,
16:15sponsored by Arnold Clarke.
16:17If you want more exclusive news and content,
16:19please be sure to follow PLZ Soccer Channels.
16:22Well, this weekend players will return to their respected clubs
16:25as Scottish Premiership returns.
16:27Let's see what's on the agenda.
16:30Celtic host Aberdeen in what could be the game of the weekend.
16:33Dundee United welcome Hibbs.
16:35Neil Critchley takes his first game in charge
16:36as Hart's boss against St Mirren.
16:38Motherwell take on Dundee.
16:40St Johnstone against Ross County.
16:41And then Sunday, Kilmarnock will face Rangers
16:43in the early kick-off time of 12 o'clock.
16:45Celtic against Aberdeen Scott.
16:47Is it the biggest test of Jimmy Tolleen's Aberdeen career so far?
16:51Yeah, without a doubt, obviously.
16:53We've seen how Celtic have started the start of the season domestically.
16:56They've been on fire, creating chances at will,
16:59defensively being very sound.
17:01So I don't want to say where they're at,
17:04because it's such a difficult game for Aberdeen.
17:06But if they do manage to come away with a point,
17:09in my opinion, I think Celtic will win a point or run Celtic close.
17:13I think they'll take a lot of confidence from it.
17:14Ryan, both clubs have started very well in the season.
17:16Do you think it'll be as close as what most are expecting it to be?
17:20I'm not too sure.
17:20I've only seen Aberdeen a couple of times this season,
17:23but I do think that Celtic are just miles ahead of everybody.
17:27So like what Scott said,
17:28if they can go there and put in a good performance,
17:31whether they win, lose or draw,
17:33I think the Aberdeen fans will just be wanting to see them go there
17:37with a little bit of confidence,
17:38knowing that if they do get something,
17:41then I think it's a real race for second if they can go and get something.
17:46But if not, they just want to see that their teams
17:50there or thereabouts and going to Celtic,
17:53so far into the season undefeated,
17:55they'll be going in there full of confidence.
17:56Celtic have considered just one goal,
17:58Tam, Aberdeen two.
17:59Are they on par when it comes to the back line,
18:01the defensive duties of both sides?
18:04No, I think Celtic are stronger.
18:06I think Aberdeen have had a favourable run of games,
18:08not taking anything away from them.
18:10They've been fortunate a few times,
18:11playing clubs that have come back from Europe on a Thursday night.
18:15I think if they can go down to Parkhead and be competitive,
18:17I fancy Celtic strongly.
18:19I think Celtic will turn up.
18:20They're always doing these big games
18:22and I think there's a lot of hype about this game
18:23and you've seen it over the years.
18:25Teams that start well outside the old firm,
18:27they go to Ibrox,
18:28they go to Celtic Park and they get turned over.
18:31I think that could happen again on Saturday,
18:33but if they can go down and be competitive,
18:35then they'll believe that they can finish best of the rest.
18:37I think their best chance this season is second place
18:41because Rangers,
18:43I don't think they're a great team at the minute.
18:44I don't think it's great off the pitch either.
18:48Listen, it's a big game,
18:49but I just think Celtic will turn up
18:51as they always do in big games and win comfortably.
18:53Will they go more attacking, do you think?
18:55Will they go toe-to-toe with each other
18:56because they'll have the belief and confidence?
18:59I think there'll be a defensive structure within that
19:02because you can want to go toe-to-toe with Celtic at Celtic Park,
19:06but unfortunately Celtic dominate the ball,
19:08so naturally they'll pin you back
19:10and you'll need to defend at times.
19:12It's what they can do when they do turn over the ball.
19:14Can they hold up?
19:15Can they get a focal point
19:16and allow their attacking players to get up the pitch
19:18and cause Celtic problems?
19:19But for me, I just think Celtic are far too strong,
19:21especially domestically.
19:23Yeah, well, former Celtic man Joe Muller
19:25certainly believes that Aberdeen can cause a bit of problems
19:28and can get that second place.
19:30I don't see anything other than Celtic winning the league,
19:32to be honest with you.
19:34I think they're like a juggernaut where they win games
19:37and if they get the better of Aberdeen at the weekend,
19:40then I think they'll go on and win the league at a canter.
19:45But they can split the top two sides in Glasgow,
19:52but I can't see Celtic being stopped, to be honest.
19:55Tam, do you agree with what he's saying there?
19:57Will they go on to continue their title-winning ways, Celtic?
20:00Yeah, I think Celtic win the league this season.
20:01I think they've got the strongest squad of players
20:03and best manager,
20:05and they can go and strengthen again in January.
20:08I think there's real competition for places in that Celtic team.
20:11I don't think you can afford to drop off.
20:12I don't think you can afford to have a bad game
20:15because there's somebody waiting to come in and take your place.
20:17There's real strength and depth
20:18and the guys will tell you when you're on a good side
20:21about strength and depth,
20:22looking over your shoulder, looking at the bench
20:24and you're in the team.
20:25You've got to play well,
20:25you've got to perform to stay in the team.
20:27I think that will drive Celtic on this season.
20:29They will win the league,
20:30but it's a big game.
20:32Aberdeen come down with confidence
20:33and if Aberdeen score first,
20:35then it'll be interesting to see how Celtic react.
20:37That's the only way I can see them getting a result,
20:39if they score first
20:41or if they can keep it tight,
20:42maybe 0-0 to half-time and then nick a goal.
20:44But I fancy Celtic with the strength they've got.
20:47Yeah, well they do have,
20:48I think it's Dundee United, Ryan, in the middle
20:50and then they play Rangers at Pataudry,
20:52which could, by then,
20:54we could be looking at a different league table.
20:56Yeah, I think so
20:57and they'll probably be keeping one eye
20:59on those games coming up.
21:01I think they'll see this week's game
21:03as a bit of a free hit
21:05and then they'll be really focused on
21:07making sure they can beat Dundee United
21:09because then when Rangers come,
21:10they want to have that sort of,
21:11I think it's five points at the moment,
21:13they want to have that cushion going into that game.
21:16So yeah, I think they will be full of confidence
21:19but I think they've never played anything like this
21:23Celtic team this season
21:24so it's going to be a real, real test for them
21:25and like what the boys said,
21:27I think Celtic will be way too strong.
21:29It's just how they handle the pressure
21:33that comes with it being such a big game
21:36and if they do lose, how they handle that
21:38going into the Dundee United game.
21:39Well, it seems to be a general consensus
21:41that Aberdeen can cause an upset
21:43as a reporter, Kobe,
21:44without speaking to Joe Lewis today.
21:47Of course, of course we can spit it off.
21:50Of course we can.
21:51There's no get away from that.
21:54We've done it before.
21:56I don't believe that Rangers are in a great place
21:58to be honest right now.
21:59They'll go through little spells
22:00of winning some games, no doubt, yeah.
22:02But I don't think they're in a good place.
22:04They're not on solid foundations
22:06within their squad
22:07and the way they're playing at the moment
22:09and Aberdeen do seem like that at the moment.
22:12You know, it's a very short period of time
22:14really we're talking about
22:16because obviously the last three or four seasons
22:20we've been a bit of a shambles really
22:24and I say shambles is a pretty harsh word.
22:27We've been unbelievably inconsistent.
22:32Yeah, well, we can certainly hope
22:34for a bit of chaos at the top of the table
22:36towards the end of the season
22:37but there's a new manager in the capital, Ryan.
22:40Mr Neil Critchley takes the reins at Tyne Castle.
22:42What's your thoughts on the new appointments?
22:46I think it's one that probably Hearts fans
22:48wouldn't have seen coming.
22:50I think they were...
22:52It looks like that.
22:55Yeah, I just think the whole kind of way
22:57they've gone about it
22:58has probably not been great.
23:00You know, I think the sort of CEO suggested
23:03that they weren't speaking to anyone else
23:05other than him
23:05when there was like a lot of reports going on
23:07that there was a manager that flew in
23:10and then flew back out.
23:11So they seem to have gone down this sort of route
23:15with the data
23:16and this is the name that came out
23:18to be the best one
23:19and it's something that Hearts fans
23:21I think are going to have to get on board
23:22but I do feel it puts a lot of pressure
23:25on the Hearts board
23:26with the decision that they've made
23:28and for his sake
23:29he'll need to hit the ground running
23:30because they've got some real tricky games coming up
23:32and the position they find themselves in the league
23:34is unacceptable
23:35and if they get a couple of more bad results
23:38he's not going to have any time to bed in
23:40and yeah, I think the pressure will certainly be on him
23:44but it'll be on the board as well.
23:45Absolutely.
23:46Tam, what do you make of what Brian's saying
23:48the system that Hearts have used
23:49to find who the best candidate is?
23:53It's different
23:54it's something that we've not seen in Scottish football
23:57and we like, as a Scottish football
24:01as a nation we like to have the norm
24:03we like to have not anything different
24:05we like to do things the way we've always done them
24:08so it's something different completely
24:11I think when you look at the success at Brighton
24:13and at USG with Tony Bloom
24:16that's the way they went about it
24:18it's been really successful
24:19if it works at Hearts again
24:20then they'll think that they can get closer
24:22not only to Rangers but to Celtic as well
24:25so it's an interesting appointment
24:28like Ryan
24:28I think a lot of the Hearts supporters
24:30would have wanted maybe a foreign coach
24:32a sexier name
24:32whatever you want to put
24:34but none of us really know Neil Critchley
24:36how he plays
24:37he could be very front foot attacking manager
24:40so it'll be interesting to see
24:41obviously the first games at the weekend
24:43how they set up
24:44how they play
24:45what changes from the way they've been playing
24:47and if they go and beat St Mirren
24:48then the fans will get behind them right away
24:50but I think the first three or four games
24:52when any new manager comes in is important
24:54because the fans want to get excited
24:56they want to see a certain way of playing
24:58you know a pattern of play
24:59and they've got some hard games coming up
25:01obviously in Europe as well
25:03so yeah I think if you're a Hearts fan
25:05you're a little bit underwhelmed by the appointment
25:08when you just look purely at his record
25:10but he must have something
25:12because Tony Bloom
25:13I'm sure that they've put a lot of managers
25:15a lot of data into this
25:17whatever it is the system they use
25:19and he's been one of the two
25:21that's come out as the best
25:22so he must tick a lot of boxes
25:24for what Hearts are looking for
25:26Could that same system be used for players Scott
25:28to see who's the best person to sign for this position
25:32to play in this particular game?
25:33Yeah I think come the next transfer window
25:36January then summer
25:37I think you will see that
25:39in terms of Hearts using that
25:40that kind of thing that we've seen at Brighton
25:42obviously on a different level
25:43and different type of wages
25:46what Brighton are paying for players
25:48compared to Hearts is stratospheres away
25:49so I think you will see that
25:51but first and foremost
25:52I think when a manager comes in
25:54he's got to get the best out of what he's got
25:55just now I think
25:57this game on Saturday against St Mirren is huge
25:59if they go off to the way they would want to
26:02and get a win
26:03and a bit more front foot
26:04and a way of playing
26:05I think it gives them a real bit of leeway with the fans
26:09I think that's when you're a manager
26:11that's the thing you want the most
26:12get off to a win
26:13that lets you bed yourself in
26:15Have you ever been proved wrong by a manager
26:17as a player
26:18when they come in and you think
26:19okay right
26:19I don't think this is going to go so well
26:21and then they prove you wrong
26:23and you've started to produce results?
26:26I think as a player
26:28you're more looking after yourself aren't you
26:30making sure you're fit
26:31and you're doing everything right to get
26:34to get in the start of the XI
26:35I think the best one for all of us
26:36would be the Ange Postacoglou one
26:39anybody thought that was underwhelming
26:40turned out to be one of the best appointments
26:42One of the best I thought was Tony Mulberry
26:44even though I got rid of him
26:46he came in and straight away the training
26:49from Bobby Wollaston
26:50Bobby was more a
26:51he didn't really take the coaching
26:52it was more Gerry McCabe and Jim Clarke
26:54but Tony came in and his training was totally different
26:56from Bobby Wollaston
26:57pre-season for example
26:58but under Bobby Wollaston
26:59we were running up Arthur's seat
27:01for two weeks
27:02just constant running
27:03which is fine
27:04that was what people were doing back then
27:07and Tony came in
27:07and the first day with balls out
27:09we were running with the ball
27:10and people were like
27:10we're not done running
27:12he's like bring your boots
27:13never seen a ball
27:14and even with Alec McLeish
27:16and Jim Duffy
27:16and guys like that
27:17never seen a ball
27:18and Tony came in
27:19and I just thought straight away
27:20he's going to be a good manager
27:21in the end
27:22that was a really good
27:23as a good manager
27:25and the other flip side of that
27:26was at Dundee
27:26when Alan Kernighan came in
27:27and I thought straight away
27:28nah
27:30and I was proven right
27:30he lasted about two minutes
27:34I think when you're
27:37listen I'm sure those managers
27:38took a look at me and thought
27:39no I've lasted two minutes
27:41but I think generally as a player
27:44you get a feel for a manager
27:45right away
27:45when he comes in
27:46you think he's pretty good
27:47you make up your mind right away
27:48I think so aye
27:49yeah I think so
27:50and I think
27:51if the dressing room
27:53are not showing the manager
27:53and he gets off to a bad start
27:55he's goosed I think
27:56if you think
27:57if you think he's got it
27:59and then you start winning games
28:00everybody buys into it
28:01and you think right
28:01we're going to be a decent team
28:02you know what I mean
28:03yeah
28:03so just on Hearts fixture list
28:05coming up
28:05they've obviously got St Mirren
28:06this weekend
28:07they're in Europe
28:07Ammonia and Nicosia
28:09next week
28:09and then the Edinburgh Derby
28:11comes around
28:12so not much time to suss things out
28:13Scott
28:14No but they did
28:15I felt personally
28:16when I seen the business
28:18they'd done this summer
28:18that they'd signed well
28:19signed obviously players
28:20who had performed well
28:22at other SPFL clubs
28:24so listen I think
28:25a new manager comes in
28:27and that all flips
28:28if they win on Saturday
28:30and you're looking forward
28:30to all the games
28:31it's just trying to
28:32stop the rot
28:33they need to start putting
28:34putting the wins together
28:35Cara Henderson was out
28:36speaking to the new Hearts boss
28:37this week
28:39it's the start of something new
28:40here at Tyne Castle Park
28:42as Neil Critchley
28:43was unveiled
28:43as the new Hearts manager
28:45he was introduced
28:46by Andrew McKinley
28:47who said he's delighted
28:47to have him on board
28:48and it was a decision
28:49based on the analytics
28:52I am delighted
28:53to confirm the appointment
28:55of our new
28:56men's head coach
28:57Neil Critchley
28:58as you'll all know by now
29:00from a lot of what
29:01I've been saying
29:02over the last
29:03couple of weeks
29:04this has been a new process
29:05for the club
29:07complementing
29:08what you would call
29:08traditional recruitment methods
29:11we've also been working
29:12with a data-led approach
29:14and those analytics
29:15have helped inform
29:17our decision making
29:18and this approach culminates
29:19in this announcement of Neil
29:22Neil Critchley met his players
29:23on Tuesday morning
29:24as he took a training session
29:25and he said that he liked
29:26what he'd seen
29:27and was impressed
29:27but he knows
29:28where the faults lie
29:30I don't want to give you
29:30too much information
29:31because that might give
29:32a little bit away
29:33what we might be
29:34doing for the weekend
29:35but I think there's
29:36some cold hard facts
29:38that you look at
29:39both ends of the pitch
29:40I think we've conceded
29:41practically two a game
29:43and we've always scored
29:44maybe six goals I think
29:46so that's the reason
29:48if that trend continues
29:50then only inevitably
29:52only for one thing that happens
29:54so quite simply
29:57games are decided
29:58at both ends of the pitch
29:59and we need to do better
30:00at both ends of the pitch
30:01he takes charge then
30:02here at Tyne Castle Park
30:033pm on Saturday
30:05against St Mirren
30:06he'll be hoping
30:07for a positive performance
30:08he wants to get that first win
30:09of the season under his belt
30:10and he'll know
30:11that there's an Edinburgh Derby
30:12looming in just a week's time
30:13but all eyes of course
30:15are on Saturday 1st
30:16and PLZ Soccer will be there
30:17to keep you covered
30:18so make sure you follow
30:19all of our social media channels
30:21Yeah well speaking of
30:22new managers
30:23Tam England have a new man
30:24in charge
30:24Thomas Tuchel becomes
30:25the third foreign manager
30:27to take charge of the Lions
30:28there's been a bit of backlash
30:29about his appointment
30:30being a German
30:31is that an old school mentality
30:33looking up like that?
30:34Yeah I think the world's moved on
30:36obviously there's a great rivalry
30:37between England and Germany
30:39over the years
30:40and I think he's
30:42when you look at the managers
30:43they're out of a job at the minute
30:45he's up there with Jurgen Klopp
30:46who's German as well
30:48I think he's a very very good manager
30:49I think Chelsea have been a shamble
30:51since he left
30:51he won the Champions League with Chelsea
30:53and they got off to a poor start
30:55then they fired him
30:56and they've been downhill ever since
30:58obviously in a decent season
30:59this season
30:59but I think he takes a lot of boxes
31:01he's got a good mentality
31:03I think the Germans
31:04have got a strong mentality
31:05when it comes to turning them into football
31:07so I think he'll be a good appointment
31:09there's rumours about Pep as well
31:10I'd have loved to have seen Pep with that England
31:12with that talent
31:13or Big Ang
31:14but I think he'll do well
31:17he's signed an 18 month contract
31:18I don't think they're pretty sure of him
31:20but I think that
31:24I think he needs to win something
31:25I think that with the squad that England have got
31:26the guys will tell you
31:27it's not easy though
31:28it's not easy to win something
31:29they've got to two finals but
31:31they've just got such a good squad of players
31:33and maybe they'll play differently
31:35I think Southgate was pretty defensive
31:37and pretty boring
31:38maybe Tuchel will let him off the reins a little bit more
31:41When you look at his CV Ryan
31:42he's hardly anything to turn your nose up at
31:44spend the clubs he's spent time at
31:45Yeah and I think he's obviously worked in England
31:47he would have worked with some of the players
31:48that are in the squad
31:50you know like we were touching on before
31:52changing rooms are a crazy place
31:54they would have already been messaging each other
31:57seeing what he's like
31:58see what he's
31:59what he
31:59you know some managers are real particular on one thing
32:01and hate another
32:02and I have no doubt
32:04that he will do well
32:05and like Tom said
32:06he was probably the best manager that was available
32:09at the moment
32:10and then that's probably why he only got 18 months
32:13I think is because
32:14they probably just want to see how he goes
32:16see what he can do with this new team
32:18before tournaments start
32:19and yeah
32:21I hope he does reasonably well
32:22but I would hate to see them win anything
32:23so I hope he actually
32:25Let's just be honest
32:27that is of course the expectation though
32:29that England will want to go on and win something
32:32and the new boss knows that
32:35And once I made a time frame up in my mind
32:39from January to the World Cup
32:41I felt already excited
32:43and it suited my passion
32:46and my strife to push this group of players
32:51and to be part of this federation
32:54with such a strong record in the last tournaments
32:57to push it over the line
32:59and to try to put a second star on the shirt
33:03I know he's the best
33:04Have you ever played under the same manager
33:06on two separate occasions?
33:09Stephen Kenny
33:11Stephen Kenny
33:12He signed me for Derry
33:14Derry got relegated
33:15and sorry
33:17Dunfermline got relegated
33:18and Derry City went bust
33:18so not great for Stephen Kenny
33:21for signing the Jonah
33:22No
33:23Did you play in the Astrot, Dunfermline?
33:25I played in the first ever game
33:27that was on the Astrot
33:28It was 0-0 on Sunday
33:29Streaker ran on the park
33:30This is a true story by the way
33:32A streaker, bollock naked guy
33:34ran on and done a clinsman
33:35right across it all
33:37and he got up
33:37and he had third degree burns
33:39all right down on his private parts as well
33:43Guys, ever played under the same manager twice?
33:45Eh, yes
33:47Yeah
33:47Is it different going back the second time?
33:49Eh, you're more familiar
33:51It's obviously
33:52Who were you with?
33:53Lenny?
33:53Lenny and Alan Stubbs
33:56and
33:58that would be the two
33:59Lenny and Alan Stubbs, aye
34:01Ryan?
34:02I had Ange
34:04youth international
34:05I had him at under 17 level
34:07and then obviously with the senior team
34:09so that was good
34:11He had changed a fair bit
34:12from under 17s
34:14to first
34:15well to national team level
34:16but you could even tell
34:17when I was 17, 18
34:19that he was going to be a top, top coach
34:21Was he all out attack?
34:22Obviously it wasn't about Australia was he?
34:24Was he kind of very front foot attack minded?
34:26Yeah, yeah
34:27He used to like
34:28I think I've said it before
34:29we used to go into games against
34:31Brazil and Holland
34:32and he'd be like
34:33we need to get Adam
34:34like we need
34:35we played Spain
34:36and he's like I want to have more possession than them
34:38and everyone's thinking
34:39fucks sake
34:40I was playing right back
34:41like this is not happening
34:43but yeah
34:43he was just one that
34:45that everyone brought into
34:47because he's just so like
34:48he's just everything he says
34:49everyone hangs on to every last word
34:51so that's one manager that I've played with
34:54Was he personal like when he was younger?
34:57I know when he went out of Celtic
34:58he was a bit standoffish
34:59for a lot of players
35:00not to speak to anybody really personally
35:01No
35:02he's very standoffish
35:04but he said like before in interviews
35:05that he wants to do that
35:06because he doesn't want to get a personal connection
35:08and then it clouds his judgment
35:09when he's picking players
35:11rather just everyone's treated the same
35:14and yeah at national team level
35:17because sometimes in national teams
35:19you get a bit different
35:19like we had Cahill and Lucas Neal
35:22and a few like big dogs
35:23that we would call them in their team
35:25and he just was like
35:26these are all on the same
35:27he would speak to Timmy
35:28exactly the same way he spoke to me
35:30he was just treated everyone the same
35:32which was perfect for me
35:35but yeah he was just very very
35:38you just do it his way
35:39or you would be gone
35:41Lucas Neal was like
35:42he was captain
35:43I think he's still the most capped captain
35:47and he was just out the door
35:48because he wasn't quite sure of Anjan
35:51and just got him out
35:53Do you prefer that as a player?
35:54Or do you like the kind of personal touch
35:56that you would have with them?
35:58Yeah I like being able to
36:00come away from football
36:01and have conversations with people
36:03because you do spend a lot of time
36:04with these people especially
36:06and I know it's international
36:07even at that
36:08you're away in hotels for days
36:09sometimes it is to speak to
36:11someone in football
36:12not about football
36:13and get a wee personal feel for each other
36:15so for me I do
36:16probably feel that I like that
36:18I think there's got to be a balance
36:20because Ryan's right
36:21you can't get too close to players
36:23if you're a manager
36:23because you've got to drop them
36:24and you've got to
36:25you know criticise them
36:26whether that be in games
36:28and training
36:29but you've still got to have
36:30some sort of conversation
36:31I remember Jim McIntyre
36:32who was a player at Dunfermline
36:33we travelled through together
36:34as players
36:35and Stephen Kenny got sacked
36:37and Jim got the caretaker manager
36:38and he phoned me the next day
36:39he says we're kind of travelling together now
36:41and I was like
36:42I'm going to be a fortunate person
36:45and then he kind of hardly spoke to me
36:47I was like
36:48aye aye
36:49it was just
36:51it was just a weird thing
36:52because he was a manager now
36:54and I used to call him Mac
36:56and I had to call him Gaffer
36:56the next day and all that
36:57I was like
36:58he's like
36:58just call me Gaffer
37:00I was like all right
37:00and he was like aww
37:01and it was just
37:02it was just aww
37:03so that's what I mean about
37:05a difference between being a player
37:06and being a manager
37:07it's a huge difference
37:08you find that as well Scott
37:09when you hang your boots
37:10up and you go into management
37:11you kind of have the same relationship
37:13that you've had with the dressing room
37:15you've got to kind of
37:15separate yourself
37:16which is something
37:18you've got to do I think
37:19What manager
37:20kind of manager do you think
37:21you'll be Scott
37:21if you choose to go that route?
37:23Yeah
37:24You take things from managers
37:26that you've had?
37:26Yeah I think you take
37:27the good and the bad
37:28that you've learned
37:29throughout your career
37:30but I think I would like to
37:32be
37:33show a bit of personality
37:34with my players
37:34and be someone
37:36that they can speak to
37:37if they weren't happy
37:38with how they were performing
37:40or think they could be in the team
37:41I would be a guy where my
37:42door would always be open
37:43Yeah well then
37:44let's move on to the next subject
37:46have Manchester United
37:47lost their soul
37:48just to give a bit of context
37:49Sir Alex Ferguson
37:50will leave his role
37:51as Manchester United ambassador
37:52at the end of the season
37:53Ferguson has been paid
37:55a multi-million pound
37:56sum by United
37:57since his retirement
37:58as manager in 2013
38:00Tam what do you make of
38:01the whole debacle
38:02that's gone on there?
38:03Man United are just
38:04a shambles of a club
38:05I mean honestly
38:05Alex Ferguson should be
38:06there till he dies
38:07just be his part
38:08of Man United
38:09until he decides
38:10that I'm walking away
38:11or he passes away
38:12but whatever
38:13He cannot get out of him
38:15I mean he is
38:17he's one of the biggest
38:17figures in Man United's history
38:20He's a great ambassador
38:21you see him at the start
38:22going to the games
38:22and I don't know if
38:23there's been whispers of
38:24maybe he's been
38:26speaking to players
38:27or maybe stabbing
38:27the manager in the back
38:28something like that
38:29there seems to be
38:29something behind this
38:30I just don't understand why
38:32when you look at the money
38:33they're paying
38:34guys like Rashford
38:35and all that
38:35and they can't pay
38:37Alex Ferguson
38:38to be an ambassador
38:38for the club
38:39I don't understand it
38:41and it's just another
38:41own goal for me
38:42with Man United
38:43they just seem to be
38:43going from bad to worse
38:45for a club
38:45probably one of
38:46if not the biggest club
38:47in the world
38:48and their supporters
38:50seen that news as well
38:51you know older supporters
38:52grew up watching
38:53Fergie's teams
38:53must be just pulling
38:54their head out
38:54and going
38:55what is going on at the club?
38:56Yeah well Eric Cantona
38:57certainly had his say
38:58on Instagram this week
38:59when he heard the news
39:00said Sir Alex Ferguson
39:01should be able to do
39:02anything he wants
39:03at Man United
39:04until the day he dies
39:05such a lack of respect
39:06it's totally scandalous
39:07Sir Alex Ferguson
39:08will be my boss
39:09Forever Scott
39:10did that come as a bit
39:10of a surprise to you as well
39:11that that decision
39:12was made quite cold throat?
39:15Yeah but I think
39:15with these sort of companies
39:17their whole thing's
39:18about what they're
39:19turning over
39:19so they've took that decision
39:21which it kind of
39:22shows you the disconnect
39:23between what a company
39:25who wants to turn over
39:26and make money is worth
39:27compared to the actual
39:28soul of football
39:29that we all associate
39:30with British football
39:31and how important guys are
39:33and Man United
39:34wouldn't be where they were
39:35if it wasn't for that man
39:36obviously his record
39:39and what he's done there
39:39is second to none
39:41so for me very surprising
39:43in terms of taking that
39:44from the club
39:45but not surprising
39:45in terms of the way
39:46football is going
39:47with the sort of people
39:48buying into clubs
39:49Does that just tell you
39:50Ryan that there are
39:51your football people
39:52involved in football clubs
39:53and there's your business people
39:54that run things?
39:55Yeah I think so
39:56and you know
39:57we're all players of ex-clubs
39:59and I think it's great
40:00when you get invited back
40:02if I get invited back
40:03to Tyne Castle
40:04Tom goes back to Easter Road
40:06and Scott goes back to
40:08everywhere
40:11It's great to have those
40:13it's great to have
40:15past players coming back
40:16and I think that's something
40:18that fans look forward to
40:19and we're talking about
40:20Sir Alex Ferguson
40:21is like what everyone says
40:23I think if you were to pick
40:24one person off the street
40:26and you say Man United
40:27they'll probably say him
40:29so to have him
40:31booted out of that role
40:32when he's not really involved
40:34is just like what Tom said
40:36it's just a massive own goal
40:37and it just shows you
40:38how far Man United have fallen
40:40since Sir Alex has been in charge
40:42He's got a seat in the director's box
40:43and everything Tom
40:43so it's a bit of an awkward decision
40:45as well for him to say
40:46I don't understand it
40:47I mean Scott touched on it there
40:50it's a businessman
40:54it's the new owner's prerogative
40:56to save money or to cut costs
40:58and he probably doesn't think
40:59he's getting value out of
41:00what he's paying Alex Ferguson
41:01he's paying him a lot of money
41:02obviously
41:02the multi-million pound
41:04to be an ambassador
41:05but again
41:07there's people taking more money
41:08out of the club
41:09not doing anything really
41:10so no I think it's a real own goal
41:12and as I said
41:13I think a lot of the older Man United fans
41:14will be really disappointed
41:16with this call
41:17Would a reduced wage
41:19maybe have been received better?
41:20Yeah I think maybe something like that
41:21but as I said
41:22Have you released a statement yet?
41:24I don't think so
41:25No
41:25I don't think he's commented
41:26Maybe there's something
41:27behind the scenes
41:27maybe there's whispers
41:29of him getting in players ears
41:30or interfering with the manager
41:33I don't know
41:33maybe it's something
41:34that's come from the manager
41:35doesn't want the shadow of Sir Alex
41:37kind of hanging over him
41:38and I don't know
41:39but for an 82 year old man
41:41you know for him to turn around
41:43and say you're not wanted anymore
41:44I think it's terrible
41:46Yeah well I thought I would end the show
41:47on something that's
41:48we've not done before
41:50Football edition of
41:51Would You Rather?
41:52So you might have done some of these
41:54so it's one of the other
41:55So first question
41:56Bring back Peter man
41:59First question
42:00Score the winner for club or country?
42:03Better ask that
42:04he's probably done both
42:05Well
42:06I've not scored for sure
42:09I think it would depend on
42:11like score
42:12I've never scored for my country
42:13so I'd say country
42:14Country
42:14Right but the fact that you're scoring
42:16in the cup final
42:18I've already scored in the cup final
42:19That's what I'm asking you
42:20Was that one of the best feelings you had?
42:21Yeah
42:22Flick
42:23It's a great goal
42:24Five breakaways
42:27If you were in the position
42:28and you could
42:29Oh country I think for me
42:31I've never played for the full
42:32I've played all the way up to B
42:33but never played for the full
42:34so I would go country
42:35I think that'd be some feeling
42:36for a Scottish player
42:37to score a winner for Scotland
42:40To go with that as well then yes
42:43Second one
42:43Train early in the morning or late at night?
42:48I've also done both
42:51When I was playing in Kuwait
42:52we used to train at 11.30 at night
42:54during Ramadan
42:55In Kuwait city?
42:56Yeah
42:57So it was
42:59that was strange
43:00like just super strange
43:01trying to do that
43:02You just go to bed
43:03on your big mattresses
43:03full of money
43:06I'd like the grass
43:09I think I would like that
43:10A lot of the Spanish teams
43:11do that as well don't they?
43:12Real Madrid
43:13Yeah a lot of
43:14Yeah
43:14A European game sometimes
43:16you train for that
43:17If I played a European game
43:18you would train at the stadium
43:19you would train at the same time
43:21which is cool
43:23I like night
43:24I'm not a morning person
43:26I'm terrible in the morning
43:26All night?
43:27No
43:27Night as well right okay
43:29Would you rather
43:30play under Jose Mourinho
43:31or Sir Alex Ferguson?
43:33In their prime
43:35Sir Alex
43:36Yeah
43:38Yeah Sir Alex
43:39Aye Sir Alex
43:40Both yeah okay
43:41Score a really embarrassing own goal
43:43in a final
43:44or be fined a month's wages
43:45for being sent off in a derby?
43:49Be fined
43:49Yeah
43:50Be fined
43:52Yeah and finally
43:53would you rather
43:53take a penalty against Buffon
43:55or Peter Schmeichel?
43:58Scott would hate penalties
43:59and say that to the offence
44:00so he'd probably say neither
44:01Put the two of them in
44:07I'd go Buffon
44:08I think Schmeichel looked massive
44:10Right
44:10He needs to come out
44:11and spread his sail and all that
44:11I think it'd be better
44:12if he scored against Schmeichel
44:13Right okay
44:14So I'm going to go
44:15Aye Schmeichel aye
44:18Yeah
44:18Well next time we're on
44:19we'll do some more
44:20That was fantastic
44:21That's a great wee quiz that Kerry
44:22Well done
44:24Tell Peter to
44:25take a note out of that book
