00:00More than Php 3 million worth of white onions from China were fished in South Harbor in Manila

00:15A 40-foot container van full of white onions was loaded by the Bureau of Plant Industry or BPI

00:21in South Harbor in Manila.

00:23It weighs 25 metric tons and is worth Php 3.5 million.

00:27The onions came from China and entered the country without a proper sanitary and phytosanitary permit,

00:34import clearance, or a proven passage to the standards and safe to eat.

00:39According to the BPI, the import permit was issued for the lifting of 16,000 metric tons of white onions,

00:46but for it to be supplied in the month of September to December.

00:49We saw that they declared that there are yellow onions,

00:54but we don't issue yellow onions at that time, July.

00:59So we immediately reported it.

01:02We alerted the Bureau of Customs and they immediately issued a hold order.

01:09According to the Bureau of Plant Industry, the harvest season for onions will start again

01:14when January comes, so it is said that the lifted 16,000 metric tons of white onions will be enough

01:20for the upcoming holiday season.

01:22The store owner, Myla, said that it is a big help that there is an onion supply so that the price does not go up.

01:36In the monitoring of the Department of Agriculture,

01:38the price of imported white onions varies from Php 70 to Php 180.

01:44The local price is Php 90 to Php 140,

01:47while the red onion price is Php 75 to Php 140.

01:52In the holiday season, the price tends to increase.
