00:00It's about all the bits in between. It's about all the joy and all the, you know,
00:04the only access to the joy is through the awareness of things inevitably ending,
00:09whether it's 50 years, 80 years or 50 weeks from now.
00:15Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh are getting candid about their emotional new film
00:20and helping people on their grief journey. The two star in A24's latest tear-jerk romance,
00:26We Live in Time. The heartfelt drama follows the relationship between Andrew Garfield's Tobias,
00:31a recently divorced salesman, and Florence Pugh's Almet, an up-and-coming chef,
00:36from their first surprising encounter through the course of a decade. As they navigate life
00:41and even welcome a child, they learn to cherish their time together when a late-stage cancer
00:45diagnosis rocks the happy home they've built. The film beautifully showcases life's highs and lows,
00:52as well as the gut-wrenching reality of grief. The two stars, alongside director John Crowley,
00:57spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about how they hope their new film helps find healing with those
01:02suffering from grief. I know that for us, making this film felt very personally healing. Hopefully
01:09it provides some solace. Hopefully it provides a container and a space for feelings to be felt
01:16and for hearts to be opened. Garfield, who lost his mother to pancreatic cancer in 2019,
01:23noted that taking on this project helped his own healing journey. But as he tells THR,
01:28grief is not just about the loss, but also all the bits in between. The film, John and Nick,
01:35Payne, our writer, created something that covers a whole span of what that experience is,
01:43and it's also not just exclusively about loss. It's about all the bits in between. It's about
01:50all the joy and all the, you know, the only access to the joy is through the awareness of things
01:57inevitably ending, whether it's 50 years, 80 years, or 50 weeks from now. For Pugh, the film
02:03also resonated with playing a multifaceted woman, and she tasked herself with making sure Almond
02:08wasn't just defined by her suffering. She wants to be bigger than the thing that this thing is
02:15making of her. She wants to be something more impressive than the downfall of something eating
02:23her alive. She wants to leave something that is far greater than the thing that is taking her,
02:30and I completely understand that. Was there a moment where you had felt like you were seen in
02:35just one way or put it in a box, whether in career or outside of that, and how did you navigate it?
02:41In any young female's career, I think you're always pushed into some sort of
02:47corner or direction or having to be something, and that's probably why I've been so vocal and
02:55opinionated is because I wanted to make sure that I am exactly the thing that I am representing.
03:00As for the chemistry between the two stars, fans have been itching to see the two together
03:04on screen ever since they made an appearance together at the 2023 Oscars. Garfield noted to
03:10THR,
03:34We Live In Time is out in theaters everywhere October 18.
