00:00The Chinese Foreign Ministry said that their fishermen were put in danger
00:05by the B-4 ships and the Chinese maritime militia near Pagasa Island this Friday.
00:11According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry,
00:13the Philippine ships' release is against the sovereignty of China
00:17and is a threat to the safety of the fishing boats and the crew of China.
00:21The Philippines should stop any steps that would complicate the situation.
00:27The B-4, which was part of the Territorial Waters of Pagasa Island,
00:31was the first to say where the incident took place.
00:34The B-4 also said that the Chinese maritime militia
00:38conducted a dangerous manoeuvre and tried to block the B-4 ship before the wreckage.
00:47Two firefighters were injured when a fire broke out in Barangay 775, Bainila.
00:54Breathe deeply.
00:58Fire Officer 2 Rain Vielle was shot in the head
01:01while the body of Senior Fire Officer 3 Maria Cristina Carolina
01:04was being cremated at the top of the building.
01:07At 5.30 a.m., residents noticed the spread of heavy smoke.
01:13About 100 houses were burned and 300 families were affected.
01:17Possibly, the fire was ignited by a candle.
01:21The mastermind and six other people involved in the murder of an online seller couple
01:25who was involved in a separate operation in Pampanga and Nueva Ecija.
01:29Last Sunday, a motorcycle robbery took place between the couple Arvin and Lerma Lulo.
01:36Their six-year-old daughter was saved and their other child was also in the vehicle.
01:41According to the investigation, the mastermind owed 13 million pesos to the couple
01:46based on the beauty products he obtained from them.
01:49He was contracted by the group Gun For Hire for Php 900,000.
01:54The suspects did not give a statement.
01:57The field health package for the hemodialysis is Php 6,350 per session
02:02based on the previous Php 4,000 per session.
02:05Because of that, it will be almost Php 1 million per year.
02:08The benefit of each member is for their dialysis.
02:12The package includes a direct connection to the dialysis
02:15and does not include the cost if, for example,
02:18the patient needs to be given a medicine that increases blood pressure or blood sugar.
02:22For GMA Integrated News, I am Joseph Morong, your eyewitness.
02:27More than Php 3 million worth of white onions were stolen in Pantalan, Manila.
02:32There is no longer a valid permit.
02:34Eyewitness Bernadette Reyes.
02:37A 40-foot container van full of white onions
02:40was intercepted by the Bureau of Plant Industry or BPI in South Harbor, Manila.
02:45It weighs 25 metric tons and is worth Php 3.5 million.
02:49The onions came from China and entered the country
02:53without a valid sanitary and phytosanitary permit, import clearance,
02:57or a proven passage to the standards and safe to eat.
03:00According to the BPI, the import clearance was issued
03:05for the importation of 16,000 metric tons of white onions,
03:09but for its supply in September to December.
03:13We saw that they declared yellow onions,
03:18but we did not issue yellow onions at that time, July.
03:23So we immediately reported it.
03:26We alerted the Bureau of Customs
03:30and they immediately issued a hold order.
03:34According to the Bureau of Plant Industry,
03:36the harvest season for onions will resume in January,
03:40which is why 16,000 metric tons of white onions will be enough
03:44for the upcoming holiday season.
03:47The seller, Myla, said that it is a big help that the supply of onions
03:51so that the price does not go up.
03:53Before, onions were expensive.
03:55So now, it's better.
03:57It's not hard for us if someone is looking for onions.
04:01According to the monitoring of the Department of Agriculture,
04:03the price of imported white onions varies from P70 to P180 per kilo.
04:09Local prices range from P90 to P140,
04:12while the price of red onions ranges from P75 to P140 per kilo.
04:16In the holiday season, the price tends to increase.
04:20We also point out that there is a supply,
04:23so they cannot increase or spike the price.
04:27For GMA Integrated News,
04:29Bernadette Reyes is your witness.
04:38In the middle of the continuous expansion of social media,
04:41fake news spread like trolls.
04:44And some of them were talked about by GMA Integrated News
04:48and commented on how they worked as spreaders of fake information.
04:54Witness, Marie Zumali.
05:00Do you know which is the truth and which is the fake news?
05:10Fake news is made up of information that looks like the truth,
05:15which is far-fetched and manipulated by the public.
05:18In a study by Dr. Jonathan Ong and Dr. Jason Cabañas,
05:23it started to become a hot topic in the Philippines in the 2016 election.
05:28What we found was that it's more normalized for politicians
05:33to be doing digital operations.
05:35For some people, yes, it is explicitly political.
05:38They want to be elected into office.
05:41And one of the most lucrative and most available jobs is digital operations.
05:48One of the fakes was a former graduate named Chris.
05:52He doesn't have a real name.
05:54Because he was looking for a job back in 2015,
05:58he jumped to the bright side.
06:01At first, he was just a moderator of a Facebook page
06:04that was used in the election.
06:06Until...
06:07At first, they told us to monitor the comments,
06:10to block the comments,
06:12to block those who said it wasn't good.
06:16But in the end, we had to create content or posts
06:20that would damage the candidate's image.
06:24Chris didn't know that he was about to troll.
06:29The word troll was not yet known in 2015.
06:32It was very simple.
06:34The caption was already prepared,
06:36the pictures were already prepared,
06:38where you would post it,
06:39what time you would share it.
06:41How much was your salary?
06:43I started with P17,000.
06:47We were paid in cash.
06:49What was the worst thing you wrote?
06:51We accused a candidate of being a troll.
06:55Because it wasn't proven that our client was a troll.
07:03This is where Chris slowly felt that there was something wrong.
07:07Every day, our boss pressured us to think
07:11that this could be thrown at the enemy.
07:14Even if it's not true,
07:16even if it's exaggerated.
07:18But you still followed it?
07:20Yes.
07:23I earn money, so why would I stop?
07:27Even if it's not true.
07:29The hierarchy or structure of a troll farm is simple.
07:33The client or the one who benefits from disinformation is the boss.
07:38Next is the troll operator or consultant
07:41who is in charge of the entire operation.
07:45They are troll workers who spread misinformation
07:48using stolen identities
07:50that they usually get from other countries,
07:53particularly in Southeast Asia.
07:56There are bosses,
07:58and they won't ever call themselves a troll,
08:01but they are actually the real masterminds of the operations.
08:06They will dictate the talk points and the main kinds of stories.
08:11In a job like this,
08:13Val is not a real name.
08:16He was hired to be a digital operator,
08:19the country's best troll worker.
08:22But he did not enroll as a candidate,
08:25but as a business.
08:26He was in competition with the company that hired him.
08:29We are trolls, ma'am.
08:30We steal from everyone.
08:32We use all kinds of accounts.
08:34Oh, yes.
08:35That's really bad.
08:36Their service is bad.
08:39Their system is corrupt.
08:41According to Chris and Val,
08:43it's easy to trust people.
08:45Topics that instill fear, anxiety, or resentment,
08:50these are the topics that are really being attacked by trolls.
08:55And this is what they use to use as digital weapons, really,
09:00to steer the conversation,
09:02to draw people's attention.
09:05What's sad is,
09:07even politicians who are angry at fake news
09:10are being forced to use trolls.
09:12It's becoming more normalized.
09:14It's becoming more professionalized.
09:16It's more expected now that we need to fight too.
09:20We need to be meme wars too.
09:24But in the midst of spreading misinformation,
09:27there is still something we can do to fight fake news.
09:30We need to empower workers,
09:32empower our students to have better vocabulary of ethics,
09:37better vocabulary of good and bad practice.
09:40It's like we're overlooking the questions of ethics.
09:47Val and Chris admitted
09:49that their illegal job is to live everyday in fear.
09:58In the end,
09:59they were the ones who decided against it.
10:03It's like guilt, ma'am.
10:05It's like you were deceived by people,
10:08and now you're deceiving yourself.
10:10I'm not being hypocritical.
10:12A lot of money will be lost,
10:14but I can't ignore my conscience.
10:16What I'm doing is wrong.
10:18It's really wrong.
10:19I reject it.
10:22We have the power to fight fake news.
10:25Let's start by being able to see other sides
10:28because our freedom to live in the truth is great.
