M*A*S*H* may be the most popular, but Hogan’s Heroes was the most ridiculous, in the best way. It took the bold move of following the members of a POW camp who foil the plans of inept Nazis.
A large portion of the cast, including the ones who played the Nazis, were Jewish. They faced persecution and never lost their physical and mental scars. The show gave them and everyone else a chance to laugh at it all in a satirical way.
The world loved watching their shenanigans for six seasons and a string of merchandise. It aired in several countries, including a highly edited version in Germany. Even the creation of the show was a bit weird. They filmed in Los Angeles and put fake snow everywhere. The winter weather was supposed to make everything feel more bleak. The show cared more about entertaining its audiences than anything. In the process, it missed a few mistakes and inconsistencies.
The timeframe was one of the main problems. The characters referenced things that wouldn’t have existed in the 1940s, such as Speedy Gonzales and the Pentagon. A periodic table of the elements includes ones yet to be discovered. Carter’s level of chemical knowledge is only one thing that remained inconsistent between episodes.
Eagle-eyed viewers will notice wardrobe changes. How did Carter’s worn jacket get clean or his hat change from red to blue? These details don’t change the show’s impact, but they are interesting pieces of knowledge for fans.
