00:00Wondering why you're not feeling tired even though you didn't sleep at all last night?
00:06Well, let's unpack this more. There are two parts of the statement. The first thing is
00:13I didn't sleep at all last night. Let's see whether that is true or not. There is a phenomenon
00:19called as paradoxical insomnia where a person actually sleeps but then thinks that they
00:26haven't slept well. This is quite common among people who are anxious by nature or if they have
00:33any other kind of three existing mental health conditions which makes them prone to worrying
00:40about sleep, worrying about not getting enough rest. So the only way to rule that out is by
00:47you know getting a sleep study done but a smaller quicker fix which I would say is observing how
00:54energetic you feel throughout the day. Are you able to focus? Are you able to be productive?
01:01Are you able to go about your day without much effort or fatigue? Then the chances are
01:09high that you did get some sleep. Maybe it was a light sleep and maybe because you were dreaming
01:16it felt like you didn't get enough sleep. So that is the first thing. Whenever we say
01:22that I didn't get any sleep at all the chances are high that we got some bit of sleep because
01:28the body has its own natural ability to go to sleep and when it
01:36needs certain amount of rest it will make us get that rest. Of course there are
01:41going to be some exceptions where people go by without much sleep but for a lot of people it
01:48tends to be paradoxical insomnia. So that is something which you might have to observe for a
01:53couple of days. The second part of the sentence which we are going to unpack is I didn't sleep
01:59but I don't feel tired at all. So let's assume maybe you didn't sleep at all or you just got a
02:05couple of hours of sleep but you still don't feel tired. This is actually a very common condition.
02:11It is called as hyper arousal. So when you're unable to sleep you are you know like you're
02:17fight-or-flight response is kind of active. Your body and mind is looking for threats
02:24in the environment and sometimes these are just perceived threats. There is no real threat. An email
02:30from your boss or some kind of a message from your partner is kind of being perceived by
02:38your brain as some kind of a threat because of which you might feel very jumpy or
02:47not tired even though you haven't gotten enough sleep. If you have played sports
02:55you might have a good experience of it. If you are in the middle of the game even
03:01though you might be physically tired you will still be alert because at that point your body
03:07is producing adrenaline. It is making sure that you are focusing on the game. The same thing happens
03:13when you are struggling with sleep. If you are anxious and worried about some kind of a threat
03:20in your environment so that creates this hyper arousal because of which you don't feel tired.
03:26It doesn't mean that you've actually slept well. It means that there is some sense of
03:34alertness in your nervous system. I told you earlier about paradoxical insomnia
03:42and to test if you are feeling well rested. It is possible to
03:50not having slept but still be able to continue your task throughout the day. But if you pay closer
03:57attention you will be able to notice if your eyes are burning or do you feel some kind of a lethargy
04:05or some kind of raised heartbeat. So those are symptoms where you are experiencing hyper arousal
04:14and of course if you have been struggling with any such issues for quite some time
04:19it is always best to consult a doctor or a sleep specialist to rule out any other issues.
04:26So I hope this video was helpful for you.
